Migration Options for SAP BW/4 HANA

SAP HANA Migration is the system conversion where we need to migrate Legacy System SAP BW
Data Warehouse to the HANA platform which works on On-premise and cloud technology. In short,
this process involves converting the SAP BW Data Warehouse to HANA technology.

This can be achieved using below Conversion Methods

● In-place Conversion
● Remote Conversion
● Shell Conversion
● New Installation
● Landscape Transformation
In Place Conversion
● Called as Classic Full system Conversion of Same/Existing System Converted/Migrated. It is
a step by step conversion of an existing SAP BW Objects. This option allows to convert all
classic objects to the newer HANA-optimized objects. Once converted, then the system
upgrade is performed to convert from BW 7.x to BW/4HANA.
● This Option allows to convert all classical objects into HANA Optimized objects compatible
with SAP BW/4HANA
● After Conversion system upgrade is performed to convert from BW7.x to BW4HANA
● Minimum Prerequisite is SAP BW 7.5 powered by SAP HANA
● It requires system downtime
Remote Conversion
● New System and system ID(SID) will be generated and your existing system will remain as it
is and the Model and the Data will be converted to SAP BW/4HANA and it is called Carve Out
or Brownfield.
● Carve Out - Can choose which models and dataflows needs to migrate
● Minimum Requirement Source System is BW 7.3 SP10 on any DB and Target Minimum
BW/4HANA 1.0 SP04 and it required SLT Software called as DMIS 2.0)2011
● It needs SLT Software because Remote Conversion converts both existing models as well as
data and that is the reason it requires SLT for data migration
Shell Conversion
● New System and system ID(SID) will be generated and it is and it is called Carve Out and
Accelerated Greenfield. It will move models such as DSO, Cubes to Advanced objects. Here
there is no movement of data.
● Carve Out - Can choose which models and dataflows needs to migrate
● Accelerated Greenfield - Similar to Greenfield approach but you have the models selected to
transport to production system and it is called as Accelerated Greenfield
● Minimum Requirement Source System is BW 7.0 on any DB and Target Minimum BW/4HANA
● SLT Software is not required since there is no data movement
New Installation
● Customer do not have any SAP system and here a new system is build from scratch with new
models and dataflow and it is called as Greenfield approach
● SAP provides standard content to build models like SAP SD/MM and other data models
● Entire flow is available when you use the standard models from SAP and activate and
perform data loading
Landscape Transformation
● Customer who want to consolidate Regional systems like ASPAC/EMEA/AME into one single
consolidated system then Landscape Transformation can be used to build a centralized
system.
● Master data and other models can be shared and consolidated.
● Carve Out to SAP BW/4HANA- Can select the data models which needs landscape
transformation to achieve simplification and easier maintenance.
