Remember?
Seismic Guided Velocity Smoothing and Interpolation
In January’s newsletter you The Velocity Accelerators module uses the properties of the Structural Tensor
learned how to improve the computed at each subsurface grid point from the seismic image, to either propagate
seismic image by performing and interpolate well log properties or smooth an existing property volume. The
Structural Guided Seismic method can be used to generate an initial velocity model for imaging purposes and
Enhancement. can be part of a seismic interpretation workflow.

Because of its computer intensiveness, the application is designed to run on HPC.

Seismic Guided Velocity Interpolation

Structural Tensor

Structural Tensor, computed at

each subsurface grid point, is
used in the present case to
propagate and smooth
attributes and properties like
velocity, in a way that honors
the structural information from
the seismic image. This is the
performed by the Velocity
Accelerators module.

Seismic Guided Velocity Smoothing

Application of the structural tensor operator enhances the seismic image by

smoothing (second panel). Similarly, the interpolated property (third panel) is
smoothed (right panel) from the result of running Seismic Guided Velocity Smoothing.

Implementation

This application is launched from the Accessories Tab of the Epos Session Manager.

Step 1: Launch Velocity Accelerators and select the operation mode: Seismic Guided
Velocity Interpolation or Seismic Guided Velocity Smoothing.
From the Input/Output tab, select the seismic volume input for the structural tensor computation. If the operation
mode is Interpolation, select the well property logs to be propagated and interpolated. If Smoothing is selected,
select the input attribute volume to be smoothed.

Step 2: Select parameters.

In the Parameters tab, the operator size for both operating modes must be defined. The larger the operator the
smoother the result. A smoothing factor enables further smoothing of the result.

In addition, there are specific options for the Interpolation mode: it is possible to smooth and resample the logs
and apply seismic data compression.
Step 3: Improve performance by running on HPC environment.

Select Multi-Tasking if the job can be run on parallel nodes.
