A. Introduction
How’s your day so far class?
Good Ma’am.
That’s good to hear.

Kindly ask your seatmate what she/he ate

for breakfast. (asking their seatmate)

Who wants to share the of his/her

seatmate? Ma’am, she ate pancakes and bacon.
Ma’am, my seatmate had fried fish and rice
for breakfast.
That’s amazing to hear that everyone eats
delicious food. I hope those foods give you
the energy you need to digest all the
information from your lessons today.
Understood?
Yes Ma’am.
Before we proceed to our discussion for
today, I want to present a video clip I got
from Youtube.

As you watch the video, I want you to

observe the following guide questions.

Who wants to read the guide question?

(Students raising their hands)
Yes please!
Guide Questions:
What happened to the conversation in the

How will you improve the conversation?
*Playing the video
Yes Ma’am.
Now let us answer the guide questions
given awhile back.

First question, what happened to the

conversation in the video?

too fast and there are lots of things she is

And who wants to read and answer the

second guide question?
How will you improve the conversation?
Ma’am for me, the girl should speak slowly
and wait for the cashier or the boy to

speak slowly and clearly. Since the cashier
guy needs to take down the food she’s
ordering.
Right? Yes ma’am.

An effective communicator engages in an

appropriate exchange of information. He
does not only feel a need to receive
information but also to provide information
at the appropriate level. To successfully
and productively accomplish this, he must
be communicatively competent.

Understood? Yes ma’am.

That is why today we will be discussing the

different types of communicative strategies
to learn to be effective communicators that
we can apply in our day-to-day life.

B. Interaction

Are you familiar with the types of

communicative strategies?
No ma’am
Yes ma’am.
In that case, let us first unlock the
definition of communicative strategy.

Kindly read please the definition.

Communicative strategies these are plans,
means or ways of sharing information which
are adopted to achieve a particular social,
political, psychological, or linguistic purpose.
It means that communicative strategies are
the guide, and it serves as the blueprint for
how the message or information will be
properly and politely conveyed to the
participants in a communication process.

Now, communicative strategies have 7

types these are:
 Nomination
 Restriction
 Turn taking
 Topic control
 Topic shifting
 Repair
 Termination

The first type is Nomination, kindly read

and explain what is nomination?
Nomination is usually used at the beginning
of the interaction to set the purpose of the
conversation. The speaker tries to open a
topic with the people he is talking to.

It means ma’am that he wants to start a

Yes! Nomination means the speaker tries to topic to his friends.
open the topic with the people he/she is
talking to. So, this strategy basically
involves the beginning of a topic.

Like for example:

- Good morning, class. How are you
today?
- Is it raining in your area?

I know you talk a lot with your friends,

classmates, and family. In your case, how
do you start a topic or a conversation?

- Hello beshy, I have some chika!

- hey bro, did you see the new girl?
- Bff, have you seen the new episode of Dr.

examples.
Now, let’s proceed to the next type which is
restriction. Who wants to read and explain
Restriction?
Ma’am, Restriction refers to a speaker’s way
of limiting or controlling the flow of a
conversation. The participants of a
communication process should know the
limitation of their conversation. Restricted
topics are dictated by the culture or context
Indeed! of the situation.
Restriction is used in constraining the
reaction or response within a define set of
categories. This is useful when narrowing
down a listener's response to on expected
set of answers.

For example: We will have 30 minutes of

online discussion regarding the topic on
Pandemic and Mental Health. An additional
10 minutes will be allotted for your
questions and related concerns.

In this example the teacher is limiting her

students to talk about nothing but
pandemic and mental health.

Did you get it?

Now, let’s proceed to the next

communicative strategy. Kindly read and Yes Ma’am.
explain please.

Turn-taking- a Timing is very important in

this aspect. When a speaker is talking in a
conversation, the others should listen
carefully to what he is saying.

It means ma’am that they should wait for

hand signals as you ask permission to

Now let’s proceed to the next

communicative strategy which is topic
control. Kindly please read and explain.
Yes ma’am!

Topic control refers to a speaker’s way of

controlling the flow of a conversation about a
certain topic. The participants should know
the ceiling of the topic they are discussing.
They should define the main issues that need

by asking questions that requires a if they will confer not worth mentioning
response from the listener. issues. Controlling the topic also depends on
the context of the situation.
In this strategy, the speaker is making sure
if the participants or listeners really
understood the topic from the beginning
until the end.

Now, kindly read and explain the next

strategy.
Topic shifting refers to a speaker’s way of
shifting from one topic to another. The

participants in the conversation.
After, the speaker insured that the topic
was well understood she/he can now
proceed to the next topic and that is called
topic shifting.

Next strategy, kindly read and explain. Repair -It refers to a speaker’s way of fixing
or mending miscommunication in a
conversation. The participants may ask the
speaker to repeat what he has said if they
didn’t understand his message. Gestures and
other body language may also help in
mending miscommunication. Participants
may also resort to the help of translators in
case of foreign language communication.
Unfortunately, not all miscommunication can
be repaired, most especially, in the case of
technological conversations.

Repair refers to overcoming communication

breakdown to send more comprehensible
messages.

This strategy is a way wherein the speaker

listeners.

Understood? Termination- t refers to a speaker’s way of

bringing a conversation to an end.
Next and the last strategy, kindly read and Participants should know how to end a
explain. conversation without being impolite. They
may use positive comments, present valid
excuses, and give compliments.

Termination refers to the use of verbal and

nonverbal signals to end the conversation.

After the conversation, you cannot just

leave the listener hanging, instead you can
wave your goodbye and leave.

That’s all the types of communicative

strategy!

C. Integration
Did you understand all the types of
communicative strategy?

In that case, let’s test if you really

understood the various types of
communicative strategy.

We will have an activity called “think-pair-

share”. I want you to be paired with your
seatmate and then form a conversation
applying proper types of communicative
strategy with the given scenarios.
Afterwards, I’ll be picking some pairs to
share their conversation while acting it.
Take note you should apply the different
types of communicative strategy. Yes ma’am!

Understood?

These are the scenarios!

"Due to the pandemic, your family moved
back to the province, and you needed to
transfer school. You know no one. And
imagine that you just met your partner.
How would you make friends and start a
conversation?

“Your best friend has a strong dislike for

your boyfriend or girlfriend because of your
three-year on and off relationship, and you
recently discovered that he or she had
cheated on you. How are you going to tell
your best friend that your partner has
cheated?”

I’ll be giving you 5 minutes to

communicate with your partner and after
that I will be calling pairs to share their
shared conversation. And once again
please apply the correct communicative
strategies that we discussed today.

Are you all done? Yes ma’am.

Scenario 1

Student 1: hi! I am just new here.

Student 2: hello.

Student A: hi there! My name is Josh and I

am a transferred student from Manila.
Student B: Hello Josh! I’m Max, I live near
the school, and I’ve been studying here since
Grade 7.

Scenario 2

Student 3: Hi friend! I’m sorry to tell you

that my boyfriend hurts me, if I listen to you
before I would never feel like this. Crying
Student 4: that’s okay, you will forget him
anyway. And now at least you learned your
lesson.

Very good class! I see you really

understood the topic today. Since you
always communicate with your friends,

family members, classmates and other, I
hope you can apply the strategies wisely.
