Question One [Total Marks: 21]

a) The University of the East Europe is interested in the overall performance of its students
in the academic year 2020/2021. There were 1460 students registered for this academic
year. The University decides to select a sample of 150 students from each of the 5
faculties- Science, Medicine, Law, Social Science and Humanities in proportion to the
number of students in each faculty.

i. Identify the population of interest for this scenario. [1]

ii. Identify the sampling technique used by the researcher. [1]
iii. State one advantage and one disadvantage of the sampling technique described in the
given scenario. [2]
iv. If the medical faculty has 584 students registered, calculate how many medical
students would be part of the sample of 150. [2]

b) The Table below shows the average score of the150 students sampled from the
University of the East Europe in the academic year 2020/2021.

Score (out of 100) Number of students

40-49 19

50-59 32

60-69 49

70-79 29

80-89 21

i. calculate the mean score of the students [2]

ii. identify the modal score [3]
iii. identify the median score [3]
iv. Use your results above to comment on the shape of the distribution. Give a reason for your
answer. [2]

c)The table below shows how students performed based in their gender. Use the table to answer
the following questions

Gender

Grade Males Females Total

A 5 8 13

B 13 36 49

C 29 32 61

D 8 12 20

F 4 3 7

Total 59 91 150

A student is randomly selected.

i. What is the probability that the student got an A grade or is Female? [3]
i. Given that the student is Male, what is the probability that the student for a D. [2]

Question Two [Total Marks: 24]

a) The table below shows the probability distribution of the discrete random variable X.

X 2 3 4 5 6 7
P(X=x) p 2p p 2p 3p p

i. Find the value of p from the table above. [2]

ii. Calculate the probability that at X is at least 5. [2]
iii. Calculate the mean of the distribution. [2]
b) A bottled water company has found in the past that 2% of their bottled water does not
meet the company’s high standards. As such periodic samples are taken and tested for
their quality. If from the last batch a sample of 12 bottles are taken and tested, determine
the probability:
i. Carefully defining the random variable of interest [1]
ii. What is the probability distribution? State the values of the parameters [2]
iii. Justifying the suitability of the probability distribution identified in part (ii)
[4]
iv. Calculate the probability that at most 2 bottles do not meet the company’s
Standards [4]
v. The expected number of bottles that do not meet the company’s standards.
[2]

c) The amount of sodium sulfate, in mg, found in the bottled water follows a normal
distribution with a mean 13mg and a standard deviation of 2.5mg. It is known that 76%
of the bottles have a mean that is more than x mg. Find the value of x. [5]
Question Three [Total Marks: 19]

a) A manufacturer of apple phone charges claims that only 4% of his production is

defective. In a random sample of 120 items, the defect rate is 4.99%. At the 1% level of
significance, test the manager's claim.
i. State the null and alternative hypotheses for the test. [2]
ii. Calculate the value of the test statistic for this test. [2]
iii. Determine the critical region(s) for this test. [2]
iv. State the conclusion of this test. Give a reason for your answer. [3]

b) The table below shows the color and the model of cars purchased by 160 randomly
selected customers at a car dealership in 2020.

Model
Color Toyota Hyundai
Red 17 19
White 25 35
Black 35 29

Use a 5 percent level of significance to test the null hypothesis that color chosen and car model
are independent.
i. State the null and alternative hypotheses for this test. [2]
ii. Calculate:
a. the expected frequency for red vehicle and the Toyota model [1]
2
b. the chis-square contribution, 𝜒 , for red vehicle and the Toyota model [1]
i. Given that the chi-square test statistic, 𝜒 2 , is 2.1183, find the p-value for test [2]
ii. State the conclusion for the test. [2]
iii. State 2 limitations of the chi-square test, 𝜒 2 . [2]
Question Four [Total Marks: 16]

The President of the Farmers Association wants to know how the amount of fertilizer and the
amount of water given to plants affect their growth. The results were inputted into MINITAB
so as to fit the model.

Regression Analysis: Growth versus Water, Fertilizer
