Applications of Bohr's Model

Bohr's model can be used to calculate the energy of electrons in different atomic orbitals. The total energy of an electron in the nth orbital of a hydrogen-like atom is given by En = -Z2Ry/n2, where Z is the atomic number and Ry is the Rydberg constant. As the principal quantum number n increases, the total energy increases. For hydrogen, the energy levels are -13.6 eV (n = 1), -3.4 eV (n = 2), and so on. For other atoms, the energies scale with Z2. Graphs of energy versus n or Z show how the relationships change for different variables.

Some common terms
Ionisation Energy

● The energy required to remove the electron from the valence shell of
atom is ionisation energy.

● Since H atom contains 1 e- which is present in first shell, so the

transition corresponding to I.E will be from 1 to ∝.

0 n =∝

ΔE = 13.6 Z2 = IE
-13.6Z2 n=1

IE for ‘H’ or H like atom = 13.6 Z2 ev/atom 1 eV/atom = 96 kJ/mol

Excitation energy

● The energy required to excite an electron from lower energy state to

higher energy state.
