Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of the eclectic approach in
teaching English for communication and for social interaction. A questionnaire was
used to identify effective ways of teaching functional communication using
communicative activities that form part of the eclectic approach. Data were collected
from graduate students and teachers of select universities in Pakistan. Findings reveal
that in comparison to other techniques, the eclectic approach is very effective in
teaching communicative functions such as presentations, dialogues, and role-plays. The
approach also proved to motivate students in both learning the rules as well as using
them to communicate with others.
