Team Assignment 1

This document provides instructions for Team Assignment 1, which has two parts. Part A involves creating an information requirements matrix and dashboard in Tableau about a chosen business area. Students will describe business questions, measures, and attributes needed to answer the questions. They will build an Excel data set and Tableau dashboard. Part B involves exploring the WHO COVID-19 global data set in Tableau to extract and visualize information, such as the most affected countries over time. Students will document their visual analysis process and conclusions in a PowerPoint file along with the packaged Tableau workbook. Both parts are due by November 14th and require student teams to upload separate deliverables to Moodle.

Team Assignment 1 (50%)

PART A - Information Requirements Matrix and Dashboarding for

Declarative questions

PART B - Visualisation Techniques for Exploration

General instructions:
- Please complete by Monday the 14th of November, before 9:00 am.
- Upload to Moodle.
- The work is to be done by the assigned teams (maximum 5 persons per
Team).
- Upload in two separate deliverables (Ass1-partA-Team # and Ass1-partB-
Team #)

Part A (25%) – Dashboarding with Tableau Software

(combination of workshop 1 and 2)
You want to design a dashboard for your company.
1.1) Choose an area of your business.
1.2) Describe the information requirements for your company: its analytical objectives
(Why? Decisions), the business questions you need to support, and the measures and
attributes required to answer these questions.
NOTE: To do this step please use a mind mapping tool (explanation is given in class).
For help in choosing the measures, you can consult the Guide included under the
Team Assignment folder (Gartner_KPIs.pdf).
1.3) Build your Information Requirements Matrix.
1.4) Choose the information you want to support by the Dashboard.
1.5) Build an Excel sheet (simulating the required data).
1.6) Design the dashboard and build it in Tableau Software
1.7) Save it in a Tableau Workbook format.

DELIVERABLES of PART A:
Please attach to the e-mail:
- The Word document (.docx ; created in steps 1.1 to 1.4).
- The Excel sheet (.xlsx ; created in step 1.5).
- The Tableau Workbook (created in steps 1.6 and 1.7).

Please name your documents beginning by:

Your Team Number (number you indicated on my list in class) followed by the Team
assignment number
Example: for team 1 it would be named:
Team1-Assignment1-PartA.docx (same for the other files).
Please upload one copy per team and indicate in the Word and Excel
documents all the names of the team members and their e-mail addresses.

See part B on next page.

Part B (25%) – Visualization with Tableau Software
For educational purposes with TABLEAU SOFTWARE

Subject and assignment objective: interactive data visualization

This is an open-ended assignment; you will have a chance to explore the visual data analysis
capabilities of one of the leading data visualization software products, Tableau.
The objective is to develop your skill at using a data visualization tool for business intelligence
and problem solving/investigation.
In part, this means picking an appropriate kind of visualization to help find patterns in the data
and present a convincing view of the issues. Each Team will come up with different results
(there is no fixed answer).

Installing Tableau Software:

You are supposed to have completed this step, in workshop # 2

The situation:
In workshop #2 you were asked to explore datasets and come up with useful insights (i.e. the
Coffee Shop workshop). In this part of assignment #1, you want to explore the dataset
(provided on Moodle): “WHO-COVID-19-global-data”, extract useful information by using data
visualization techniques and present it.
The provided dataset contains variables about the number of cases and deaths related to
Covid-19 by day, country, and region; from the 3rd of January 2020 to the 26th of September
2022.
Variables:
Date_reported : Date the data was recorded.
Country_code : Country code.
Country: Country name.
WHO_region: region according the “WHO” (World Health Organization).
Examples: AFRO: African Regional Office; EMRO: Eastern Mediterranean Regional
Office; WPRO: Western Pacific Regional Office; SEARO: South-East Asia Regional
Office; etc.
New_cases: number of new positive cases.
New_deaths: number of new deaths.

How to proceed:
Connect to the provided dataset and start asking yourself questions and querying the data
visually (i.e. What countries were the most affected by new cases? Then follow-up on these
questions (i.e. by exploring the region, the number of new deaths, the period of time, etc.). It
is similar to the approach you used exploring the CoffeeShop dataset (in workshop #2).
You’ve been given data and you need to transform it into information. Then present it in views
and group it in dashboards (using Tableau Software).
Deliverables: Document in a PowerPoint format (maximum 15 slides) and a packaged
Tableau file (.twbx)
- What you want to have in your PowerPoint document is an explanation of what you
discovered with visual support (screen shots).
- With each "screen shot", define what question(s) you are asking, what you observe, and why
you went where you did in your step-by-step exploration process.
- Conclude by explaining if data visualization can be of help (or not) to the "END-USERS" in
your line of work. If it can help, give an example of how it can be applied, if not explain why.
Submit the PowerPoint file and the packaged Tableau workbook using the appropriate
link on Moodle.
Please name your documents beginning by:
Your Team Number (number you indicated on my list in class) followed by the Team
assignment number
Example: for team 1 it would be named:
Team1-Assignment1-PartB.pptx
Team1-Assignment1-PartB.twbx
Please upload one copy per Team and indicate in the PowerPoint all the names
of the Team members and their e-mail addresses.

How do you know when you are done?

Create at least 6 views (or more) grouped in 2 dashboards (or more).
Generate enough views (displays) to show your progressive exploration. These displays
should show different capabilities of Tableau (e.g., using different views, filtering data, different
styles of graphs -- Tableau does a lot of automatic generation of what it thinks is the right type
of graph). Treat this like a treasure hunt!
