INVENTORY MODELS
4. ABC corporation has got a demand for particular part at 10,000 units per year. The cost per
unit is Rs. 2 and it costs Rs. 36 to place an order and to process the delivery. The inventory
carrying cost is estimated at 9 per cent of average inventory investment. Determine:
i) Economic order quantity.
ii) Optimum number of orders to be placed per annum.
iii) Minimum total cost of inventory per annum.
5. A manufacturer has to supply his customers 3600 units of his product per year. Shortages
are not permitted. Inventory carrying cost amounts Rs. 1.2 per unit per annum. The set-up
cost per run is Rs. 80. Find:
i) Economic order quantity.
ii) Optimum number of orders per annum.
iii) Average annual inventory cost (minimum).
iv) Optimum period of supply per optimum order.
6. Usha corporation currently practices the following system for the procurement of an item.
No. of orders placed in a year = 8, ordering cost = Rs. 750/order, each time order quantity
= 250, Carrying cost = 40 percent. Comment on the ordering policy of the company and
estimate the loss to the company in not practicing scientific inventory policy.
Moving Average (MA) Forecasting
7. The past data on the load on the weaving machine is shown below:
Month Load
May-96 -
June-96 585
July-96 610
Aug-96 675
Sep-96 750
Oct-96 860
Nov-96 970
(a) Compute the load on the weaving machine centre using 5 th moving average for
the month of December 1996.
(b) Compute a weighted three months average for December, 1996 where the weights
are 0.5 for the month, 0.3 and 0.2 for the other months respectively.
Machine problem
8. There are five jobs each of which must go through machine A, B and C in the order
ABC processing times are given in table:
Job Processing times
A1 B2 C3
1 8 5 4
2 10 6 9
3 6 2 8
4 7 3 6
5 11 4 5
Determine a sequence for five jobs that will minimize the elapsed time T.
9. A machine operator has to perform two operation, turning and threading on a number
of different jobs. The time required to perform these operation (in min) for each job is
known. Determine the order in which the jobs should be processed in order to
minimize the total time required to turn out all the jobs.
Job Time for turning(Min) Time for threading (min)
1 3 8
2 12 10
3 5 9
4 2 6
