The document discusses minimum hole sizes that can be cut using a flatbed laser cutter. It provides a table with the minimum round hole diameters for mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum in various thicknesses when cut with oxygen, nitrogen, or nitrogen. For example, the table shows that the minimum round hole size for 4mm thick mild steel cut with oxygen is 2mm in diameter. It also explains that non-round hole shapes can be cut if their area is equal to or greater than the minimum round hole size. Customers should contact the company to check if an unusually shaped hole can be cut.

Table 1 below refers to the recommended minimum hole size as laid out in our flatbed laser cutter’s specifications. The sizes given are those for a round hole using the material, thickness and process gas specified. It is also possible to convert these sizes from a round hole to a hole of another shape, such as a triangle or square, by comparing the area. For example for 4mm thick mild steel cut with oxygen, the table recommends the smallest round hole size to be 2mm in diameter. 𝜋𝑑 2 𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝐶𝑖𝑟𝑐𝑙𝑒 = 𝜋𝑟 2 = 4 𝜋×22 = 4 = 𝜋 = 3.14𝑚𝑚2 Therefore the size of the smallest square hole possible in this situation would have an area of 3.14𝑚𝑚2 and would measure 1.78mm x 1.78mm (1.772mm needs to be rounded up to 1.78mm). However, even if the areas are the same, a more complex or unusual hole such as a very thin slot, may not be possible to cut. If you are unsure if a hole would be possible to cut, feel free to contact us and check.
