MIDTERM TEST
SEMESTER II
SESSION 2021/2022
BENG 2143
Engineering Statistics

Date: 22.04.2022
Time: 5 PM - 6.30 PM
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Instructions to students:
1. This an online based mid-semester examination.
2. This paper contains 8 pages and 3 questions only. Please answer ALL 3
questions in your own answer sheets and upload them within the specified
time.
3. Any form of discussion is STRICTLY PROHIBITED. Lecturers have the

QUESTION 1

The following data represent a sample of breaking strength of linen threads (in oz) and its
percentage, selected from a small factory. A total of 200 linen treads were selected for
observation in this study.
Table Q1: Breaking strength (in oz) linen treads and its percentage

Breaking Strength Percentage (%) of

Linen Tread
15.0 20.0 6
20.0 25.0 12
25.0 30.0
30.0 - 35.0 27
35.0 40.0 21
40.0 45.0 11
45.0 50.0 7

(a) Find the value of x, the percentage of linen treads between the breaking strength of 25.0-
30.0 oz.
[2 marks]

(b) Construct a frequency distribution table that includes the (exclusive) class limits, class
midpoint (m), frequency (f), mf and m2f.
[7 marks]

(c) Determine the mean, variance and standard deviation of breaking strength of linen
treads.
[6 marks]
Answer:
(a) 16
(c) mean = 32.8
variance = 61.7186
std deviation = 7.8561

QUESTION 2

The sisal composite tensile strength is normally distributed with a mean and standard deviation
of 131 and G MPa, respectively. Calculate the value of standard deviation, G, if it is known that
20.33% of the tensile strength will be at least 151 MPa. Next, compute the probability that the
tensile strength will be at least 99 MPa but not more than 160 MPa. Answer:
G =. 24.0964
0.7931

A random sample of 45 materials is then taken for a study. Compute the probability that the
mean tensile strength will be at most 122 MPa. Next, determine the probability that the mean
of such tensile strength will be within 4.45 MPa of the population mean.
Answer [15 marks]
0.0060
0.7850

QUESTION 3

Most communication developers claim that a 5G+ wireless connection would give an average
spectral efficiency of exactly 30 bps/Hz. To test the claim, a spectral efficiency performance
from a random sample of MIMO technologies in bps/Hz has been obtained below:

30.5 29.6 30.2 30.6 29

31.6 29.1 31.6 30.9 30.9
30.7 29.2 29.2 30.8 30.6
30.3 30.5 30 29.8 30.9
32.7 30.3 30.3 30 30.8
31.7 30.6 29 32.5 29.8
29.3 31.9 30.9 30.3 29.3

Using the sample data above, show and compute the point estimate of the true average spectral
efficiency. Next, test whether the claim is true at the 98.5% confidence level. Finally, repeat the
test using the p-value approach at the 98.5% confidence level.
[15 marks]
Answer:
mean = 0.1044
Reject H-null, There is no enough evidence to conclude that
the low latency of developed mobile devices is exactly 0.1 ms.
p-value = 0.00614
