Solution Set 3

The document contains 3 physics problems involving collisions and springs. Problem 1 involves calculating the maximum distance a slider block moves on springs after being hit by another block, and the average net force during impact. Problem 2 involves calculating the post-impact speeds of two swinging balls after colliding, and the maximum angle one ball swings. Problem 3 involves calculating the rebound speed of a marble fired from a slingshot at a wall.

Chapter 15 Sections 15.4 Solution Set # 3

Problem 1 The slider block B is confined to move within the smooth slot. It is connected to two springs, each of which has a stiffness of k = 30 N/m.They are originally stretched 0.5 m when s = 0 as shown. a) Determine the maximum distance, s max, block B moves after it is hit by block A which is originally traveling at (v A ) 1 = 8m/s. Take e = 0.4 and the mass of each block to be 1.5 kg. b) Determine the average net force between blocks A and B during impact if the impact occurs in 0.005 s.

Problem 2

Two identical balls A and B of mass m are suspended from cords of length L/2 and L, respectively. Ball A is released from rest when = 90 and swings down to = 0, where it strikes B. Determine the speed of each ball just after impact and the maximum angle through which B will swing. The coefficient of restitution between the balls is e.

Problem 3 Using a slingshot, the boy fires the 0.2-lb marble at the concrete wall, striking it at B. If the coefficient of restitution between the marble and the wall is e = 0.5, determine the speed of the marble after it rebounds from the wall.
