Application Software

Application software, or simply applications,


are often called productivity programs or end-user
programs because they enable the user to
complete tasks, such as creating documents,
spreadsheets, databases and publications, doing
online research, sending email, designing graphics,
running businesses, and even playing games.

• An application that allows us to create and


manipulate texts and graphics.
Word Processor
– offers the functionality of various materials such
as paper, pen, typewriter, eraser, as well as a
dictionary. These functionalities together in an
application offer us the flexibility to format
documents by making changes to the font, the
page layout, and the page style.

Ribbon tabs and Quick Access Toolbar
The current versions of Microsoft Word use features like the Ribbon and the Quick
Access Toolbar where you can find the basic commands to manipulate your document.

The Ribbon holds multiple tabs which you can find near the top of the window.
Groups
Each menu tab then contains several groups of related commands. An example will
be this Paragraph Group in our Home tab for formatting paragraphs in your document.

Customize Quick Access Toolbar
This toolbar lets you access common commands wherever tab you’re in. By
default, you can see three commands in this toolbar. So if you want to add more
commands in the Quick Access Toolbar, click that icon beside the redo button and add at
least three more commands there.

If you click this tab, you’ll see the backstage view that offers various options for
saving, opening a file, printing, and sharing a document.

When you click the File tab, you see many of the same basic commands that you
saw when you clicked the Microsoft Office Button or on the File menu in earlier releases of
Microsoft Office, such as Open, Save, and Print.

• Creating new files
To create a new file click the New button to see a list of available templates, or
search for more templates to start with.

• Open an existing file


Click the Open button on the left navigation pane to see a list of recently edited
files. If the file you want isn't listed there, you'll also see file locations you can browse to find
the file. If you have a file that you want to make sure is always on the recent list you can pin
that file to the list. Hover your cursor over the file name and you should see a pin icon
appear towards the right side of the file name. Click that to pin the file so that it always
appears on the list. Click the pin again to unpin a pinned item.

The Home Tab is used to perform many of the common tasks such as changing fonts,
cutting and pasting text and images into documents, changing paragraph formats, applying
styles, and editing text. The groups and buttons for this ribbon are described in the table.

Insert Tab
The Insert Tab is used to insert different features such as tables, pictures, clip art, shapes,
charts, page numbers, word art, headers, and footers into a document. The table describes
each of the groups and buttons available on this tab.

Design Tab
This tab is used to make changes to the design of a Word document, such as
changing the document theme or the font for the whole document. It is also possible to add
a Page Border or Watermark to the document or to apply a Color to the page. The table
provides a description of each of the groups and buttons within this tab.

This tab is used to make changes to the layout of a page within a Word document
such as orientation, margins, page breaks, and page borders. The table provides a
description of each of the groups and buttons within this tab.

References Tab
This tab is used to insert reference elements, such as a table of contents, into a
document. The table below provides a description of the groups and buttons on the ribbon
for this tab.

Mailings Tab
Each individual tab is divided into groups. Under the Mailings Tab, each group is
used to perform different steps in the mail merge process. The Mailings tab can also be used
to create Mail Merges. Each group under this tab is described in the table below.

This ribbon contains groups that can be used to check the spelling and grammar in
a document, add comments to a document, track the changes in a document, compare
two or more versions of a document, or to protect a document. The table below describes
each of the buttons in the groups for this ribbon.

This tab is used to display a document in different ways within the Microsoft Word
window. The illustrations below shows the Views Tab groups and buttons. The table describes
what each of the buttons on this tab can be used for.
