Psychology is a good career choice in India. There is an increase in demand for trained
psychologists in India. In India, there are various branches of psychology and they are Clinical,
Counseling, Industrial, Educational (school) and Forensic Psychology.
The field of clinical psychology deals with diagnosis, understanding of psychological and mental
disorders and treatment of them. Clinical psychologists work with people who have difficulty
dealing with life and have issues in day-today functioning. The field offers wide range of career
opportunities and places to work. Clinical psychologists usually work in hospitals, academic
institutions, and counseling and rehabilitation centers. They can also establish private
consultation firm.

Psychologists try to benefit those with whom they work and take appropriate care to do no harm
to the client. As professionals, psychologists seek to safeguard the welfare and rights of those
with whom they interact professionally and other person who are affected. Psychologists are alert
to and guard against personal, financial, social, organizational, or political factors that might lead
to misuse of their influence.
FIDELITY AND RESPONSIBILITY
Psychologists establish relationships of trust with their clients. They need to be aware of their
professional and scientific responsibilities to society and to the specific communities in which
they work. Psychologists uphold professional standards of conduct, clarify their professional
roles and obligations, accept appropriate responsibility for their behavior, and seek to manage
conflicts of interest that could lead to exploitation or harm.
INTEGRITY
Psychologists seek to promote accuracy, honesty, and truthfulness in the science, teaching, and
practice of psychology. Thus ethically psychologists do not steal, cheat, or engage in fraud,
subterfuge, or intentional misrepresentation of fact. Psychologists strive to keep their promises
and to avoid unwise or unclear commitments.
JUSTICE
Psychologists recognize that fairness and justice entitle all persons to access to and benefit from
the contributions of psychology and to equal quality in the processes, procedures, and services
being conducted by psychologists. Psychologists exercise reasonable judgment and take
precautions to ensure that their potential biases, the boundaries of their competence, and the
limitations of their expertise do not lead to or condone unjust practices.
RESPECT FOR PEOPLE'S RIGHTS AND DIGNITY
Psychologists respect the dignity and worth of all people, and the rights of individuals to privacy,
confidentiality, and self-determination. Psychologists are aware that special safeguards may be
necessary to protect the rights and welfare of persons or communities whose vulnerabilities
impair autonomous decision making. Psychologists are aware of and respect cultural, individual,
and role differences, including those based on age, gender, gender identity, race, ethnicity,
culture, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, disability, language, and socioeconomic
status and consider these factors when working with members of such group.
During the year 2007 their total demand was estimated to be 3,037 personnel who will be
increase to 3,155 by the end of 11th five year plan and will further increase to 3,232 by the end
of 12th five year plan. As the number of disabled population will be increasing, the demands of
such personnel will also increasing. About 85% of them are needed at degree level and
remaining 15 % at certificates level.
The stocks of trained manpower in terms of clinical psychologists were available 209 in the year
of 2007, 465 in the year o f 2012 and 785 in the years of 2016. According to IACP annually
report there are currently 852 members in the association. They may be or may not be associated
with Rehabilitation Council of India. A number of studies show that about 25%of trained
professionals are going abroad due to better remunerations, service condition and job future
prospect. As estimation shown only few persons with PhD who are engaged in this sector. To
overcome this apex national institutes and universities should offer more doctoral and post
graduates courses in this stream. Expert from throughout the country as well as abroad would be
involved to encourage the student for higher professional qualifications.
