Our Mission
Adelaide International School inspires and challenges every student to develop their potential as
a global minded, critical thinking citizen. We specialise in teaching English for Academic
Purposes to students wishing to improve their language proficiency prior to entering one of
Adelaide’s highly accomplished prestigious schools. In addition, we deliver the South Australian
Certificate of Education to domestic and international students in the heart of Adelaide’s
Central Business District.

We are delighted that you are considering our school for your child’s
education. Adelaide International School welcomes students from 5
years to 18 years to study Intensive English in a safe and caring
environment supported with structured wellbeing programs. Our
Intensive English classes are grouped according to student age and
language proficiency levelling using our EPET language assessment
tool. We tailor personalised learning plans for each student, offering
each senior secondary age student the opportunity to undertake some
SACE studies. Most of our students transition to their desired
destination school. A number choose to complete their full South
Australian Certificate of Education certificate at AIS, prior to taking
up studies at an Australian university or other tertiary education
institution. All our intensive English language proficiency programs
are designed, endorsed, and delivered by teachers informed by the
research of Dr Peter Mickan and his internationally recognised
researchers at the Adelaide Research Institute. We welcome you to

Adelaide Independent Schools Alliance (AISA) is a partnership of 15
elite, prestigious non-government schools in Adelaide, South
Australia. The CRICOS accredited 'English for Academic Purposes –
Elementary to Advanced' programs are tailored to improve a student’s
English proficiency to a level that meets the entry requirements of
these highly regarded schools. On completion of the recommended
number of weeks of Intensive English study, students are prepared to
enter mainstream classes. We will liaise with agents and families to
facilitate and progress your application to your desired Alliance
destination school.

English For Academic Purposes -

Primary and Middle Years
Adelaide International School is a registered provider of English for Academic Purposes -
Elementary to Advanced. Improving proficiency in English is a critical step to securing
enrolment in your preferred Adelaide school. Adelaide International School specialises in the
delivery of research-based English for Academic Purposes that exposes students to the range of
language, text types, and in particular, teaching and learning approaches using inquiry methods
experienced in mainstream schools in Australia.

Our EAP Curriculum:

Is developed from Australian Curriculum objectives (ACARA).
Is shaped by learning area contexts and subjects, concepts, school values and ACARA
capabilities.
Our EAP graduates from AIS receive a comprehensive report at the end of their course, together
with a formal Certificate of Attainment.

EAP - Primary Years

Adelaide International School provides a primary school ready program based on the Australian
Curriculum, that focuses on Intensive English development for students aged 5 to 11 years,
taught by an experienced primary teacher with an understanding of the diverse needs of young
children transitioning into mainstream schooling. Students are involved in a range of carefully
crafted learning experiences, designed to provide scaffolding to learn the English language that
will build their confidence and promote engagement in their learning. Small classes allow for
personalised learning which aims to meet the needs of each individual.

EAP - Middle Years

Students who are in Year 7, 8 and 9 study intensive English to prepare to enter mainstream
schools to study Year 10, 11 and 12. Students are usually between the ages of 12 to 15 years of
age. There is no SACE offered in this course. Students focus on intensive English, linked to the
Australian Curriculum. Students study:

SACE Connect

Secondary age students are levelled and assigned to an appropriate class. All students enrol in 4.5
hours of study for each of the following subjects:

English for Academic Purposes – English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D)

English for Academic Purposes – Humanities
English for Academic Purposes – Mathematics
English for Academic Purposes – Science
SACE Stage 1 Personal Learning Plan

Wellbeing and Personalised Learning

All students are immersed in a quality wellbeing and careers program, with a home class tutor.
Students get a head start to achieving their SACE, whilst developing their English language
proficiency and gaining the understanding of assessment requirements expected in senior
secondary schooling in South Australia. Students who undertake a minimum of 20 weeks of this
course, and who meet the SACE achievement standards, have the flexibility to be awarded up to
50 SACE credits. Students learn in a caring, multicultural community from Vietnam, Indonesia,
China, Cambodia, Taiwan, and Australia, allowing them to form strong friendships.

English Proficiency Evaluation Test (EPET)

Adelaide International School has developed its own English language test called the English
Proficiency Evaluation Test (EPET). The EPET is a cost-effective and convenient English
proficiency test which is recognised by AISA partner schools as evidence of a student’s current
level of English. Students cannot pass or fail the EPET. Rather, it uses a sliding scale to identify a
student's current level of proficiency in English communication. This is then used to determine
the recommended length of English for Academic Purposes program they will require to enter a
mainstream Australian classroom.

The EPET can be completed in person or online, and does not require any prior English test or
preparation prior to taking the test. Results are usually available within 48 hours of completion,
and will provide the recommended number of weeks the student will need of Intensive English
study. The EPET is an alternative for students who have not undertaken IELTS or AEAS
assessment.

SACE - Year 11 and Year 12

The SACE is an internationally recognised qualification awarded to students who successfully complete
Stage 1 (Year 11) and Stage 2 (Year 12) at a South Australian high school. To be successful, students
need to achieve 200 credits, through a mixture of compulsory and elective subjects. Credit towards the
SACE may be given to international students who have successfully completed Year 11 in their own
country.

Compulsory SACE subjects include:

Personal Learning Plan (completed in the High School SACE Preparation Program)
English as an Additional Language
Mathematics
Research Project

Depending on the desired tertiary pathway, Adelaide International School offers students the
opportunity to select subjects that, upon successful completion, will allow them to apply for entry into
most universities.

Students receive an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) based on their academic results from
the SACE. The ATAR is recognised for entry into Australian universities and Technical and Further
Education (TAFE) institutions. The SACE is recognised internationally and can be used for entry into
overseas universities.

Come and Try Adelaide Schools

Adelaide International School offers study tours to

international students who are interested in improving
their English language skills and experiencing local cultures.
English language courses are personalised for each group
based on their pre-existing English language levels. Local
excursions and activities are integrated into the program,
including visits to local private schools. Study Tours allow
international students the opportunity to observe the
Australian education system, experience local culture, and
develop their English language skills through Adelaide
International School's coordinated activities. They are a
fantastic experience for any student who is contemplating
studying in Australia, or who wants to immerse themselves
in Australian culture, while improving their English.
 Guardianship Support

AIS recommends that parents consider registering with a recognised third-party provider of quality and
reliable service to international students for guardianship support. AIS recommends either the Student
Guardian Service (SGS) or International Student Alliance (ISA).

Student Guardian Service (SGS):

SGS has worked extensively with local schools in Adelaide, including AISA schools, to provide
comprehensive welfare arrangements for international students under the age of 18. SGS's custodial team
members all hold the mandatory 'Responding to Abuse and Neglect' certificate required by the Australian
Government. SGS will allocate a supporting staff member who is bilingual in both English and the student’s
native language, so that they can best support the student. SGS also provides timely communication with
their homes.

SGS's 24/7 service includes airport pick-up and drop-off, accommodation arrangements (if required) and
coordination, local briefings, homestay visits, holiday arrangements, emergency assistance support, as well as
support with academic follow-up or school meetings, counselling advice, etc.

International Student Alliance (ISA):

ISA has a team of independent multilingual carers whom the student can rely upon for guidance, advice, and
support on a range of issues, including academic progress, coaching, personal welfare, social and emotional
issues, financial guidance, general safety, and security.

They have their own Safe Student App, which is an app designed for students to seek help if they encounter
an emergency. This app will directly contact emergency services and notify three of the student's emergency
contacts.

 Scholarships Information

Scholarships are based on full course tuition fees, not on any discounted fees.
Scholarships are awarded based on individual merit and not all applicants will receive scholarships.
Scholarships are awarded to applicants who best meet the application criteria.
In general, a scholarship will not exceed 50% of course fees. A scholarship in excess of 50% will only
be granted in exceptional circumstances.
Scholarships do not apply to any fees other than tuition fees. Uniforms, Homestay fees, Material
fees, etc. are not subject to a scholarship discount.
The terms and conditions applicable to payment of fees will apply to scholarship holders.

Criteria

The following criteria will be used to determine if an applicant will be awarded a scholarship:

Financial Need
EVIDENCE: Letter from parents that outlines the financial need and includes information about the
occupation of parents and the number of siblings.
Academic Performance
Must be of at least average to high competence. Passing grades in English will be essential.
EVIDENCE: the two most recent school reports.
Contribution to the school or wider community.
EVIDENCE: Certificates (if appropriate), or a letter of commendation from a teacher or school
principal or community member.
