Weekly Test 02 - Cell Cycle

Homologous chromosomes pair up and exchange genetic material through crossing over during prophase I of meiosis. This leads to new combinations of genes. Independent assortment of chromosomes during metaphase I can produce many different gametes. Half the normal number of chromosomes are present in each gamete due to two rounds of division in meiosis. Meiosis reduces the chromosome number in offspring so that fertilization restores the normal number.
