The term Agodaka which appears on the coins of this Janapada is sometimes identified with
Agrodaka (Agra+udaka) which literally means place of foremost (Agra) water (udaka).
Another derivation of the word Agodaka has been made keeping the present Agroha form
in view. Agroha thus has been derived from Prakrit form Agga-rohaya of its Sanskrit
equivalent Agra-rodhaka, meaning the foremost (agra) bank (rodhaka).
James Prinsep, in 1858, is credited to be the first to publish a coin of the Agreya tribe
and Allan, the first to make out the Brahmi script ‘Agodaka Janapadasa’, attributed to the
Republic of Agrodaka or Agreya. All Agroha coins are die-struck and have legends only in
Brahmi and invariably show tree in railing on the obverse and Seven types of reverse, they
are Bull type, Lion type, Composite animal type, Lakshmi type, Chaitya type, Temple type
and Chakra type. It is said that the Agarwal and Agrahari communities claim their origin
from Agroha. According to their legends, Agroha was the capital of their founder Agrasena.

Coins of Ancient India
City State of Kurapurika (200 BC), Purika was a well-known city in the Avanti area
during the ancient times around 200 BC. It was situated on the banks of the river Narmada
near the city of Mahismati. Kurapurika was a Purika of the ancient times. According
to Fleet, Purika was located to the south of the island of Mahismati (Mandhata in the
Khandwa district) on the Narmada. The discovery of the coins of another city state of
Madhya Pradesh prompted the discovery of the location of Purika as well. They issued both 24
inscribed and uninscribed coins. The inscribed coins bear the Brahmi legend ‘Kurapurika’.
The boat symbol is quite often seen on the coins of the Kurapurika and also on the coins of
Ujjain. Kurapurika civic coins have also been reported from eastern Malwa but the exact
location of Kurapurika remains uncertain and trade activities might have brought these
coins to the Eran-Vidisha region.Prashant. P. Kulkarni has published a very useful survey
of the civic issues from the Narmada valley in ICS-NL 37, pp.3-21 (‘New discoveries in
coins from Narmada valley: geographical and historical implications’). He reports a large
number of coins of Kurara, Bhagila, Mahismati and at least one Kurapurika coin to have
been found at Nadner, i.e. ancient Nandinagara. Other Kurapurika coins however came
from the Mahismati region on the banks of the Narmada and that is where Kulkarni sees
the origin of the Kurapurika series, the ancient site of Purika near Omkareshwar. A decade
ago a small hoard surfaced from an unknown river in a village in Rajasthan and the coins
offered here are from the same hoard. Refer to : Coins of Kurapurika, a forgotten City State

68. Hasan Shah & Fath Shah, Dar-ul-Sultana Kashmir Mint, Gold Dinar (Mule?), AH 876, Obv: The Kalima Shahada within a circle, epithet
name Dar-ul-sultana & hijri date 876, Rev: kibr-i-mamlakat kih muhr (mihr)-i-daulat ast, sikkah-i-fath shah sultan ain Kashmir ast (the glory of
the kingdom, which is the mohur (sun) of the state, is the coin of Fath Shah of Kashmir), 11.28g, 21.00mm, (G&G # K30 &K55), choice extremely
fine, two test marks, Exceedingly Rare.
This (mule?) specimen is struck using the dies from two different ruler of Kashmir Sultanate, Hasan Shah and Fath Shah. The obverse has Kalima
Shahada within a circle and date AH 876 is clear in the margin, this date is of the reign of Hasan Shah who was the ruler between AH 876-889,
also die identical of the example listed by Goron & Goenka vide reference no K30. The reverse is read as Kibr-i-Mamlakat Kih Muhr-i-Daulat Ast,
Sikkah-i-Fath Shah Sultan ain Kashmir Ast, it clearly identifies the ruler name, die identical of the example listed by Goron &Goenka vide reference
no K55, Fath Shah’s first reign was AH 892-904. It could have been a joint issue or a mint-master’s mistake to pair the different dies, since the die
is of equal quality at both sides and not worn-out, it is also possible that the die-engravers of Fath Shah didn’t care much and imitated the legends
from the obverse as it is including the date of Hasan Shah. Such incidents are known from the Kaserahs with the fixed date AH 874. More research
on the subject is required. Nevertheless a very important coin of the Kashmir Sultanate!
Similar example was sold in our Auction No. 25 for 4Lakh+BP/Taxes.

Deccan had always been a matter of distress for the Mughals. Treaties were made and breached
114 soon forcing the emperors to act and it took several campaigns for the Mughals to assume
control over the region. The first place to be annexed was Dharur and it was renamed Fatehabad.
Dharur was a town of strategic importance situated on a trade route that traversed the Balagat

The issues of the Marathas, struck whilst they were in occupation of Itawa, consists entirely
of rupees in the usual Mughal style. The occupation by the Marathas commenced about
1752. The Maratha rupees in the name of Shah Alam II ceased after 1761 when they were
driven out from Itawa by the Rohillas. But the Marathas were able to reoccupy the city
again and resumed the coins in 1771 (regnal year 12). Their final issue lasted only until
1774 (regnal year 16), when they were finally ejected by the Nawab of Awadh and the
Rohillas.
There is nothing distinctive about the various issues of the Rohillas and the Marathas
130 except for the dates and the various symbols that appear on these coins.

2019 is a momentous year for us here at Marudhar Arts as 3 generations of The Marus celebrate 53 illustrious years
of dedicated service in upholding the rich historical and cultural heritage. This February we reached the milestone of
organizing and celebrating our Silver Jubilee Auction. Our journey of the past 25 auctions has been one of great learning,
of highs and lows, of excitement and of deep gratitude for us.
This year we also organized the 10th edition of National Numismatics Exhibition, NNE. From its inception, organizing the
NNE has been a source of great pride for us at Marudhar Arts and it wouldn’t have been possible without the encouragement
and enthusiastic participation of the Numismatics and Philately community.
To enshrine this milestone in our history, We decided to institute the Numismatics - Notaphily- Philately - Autographs
- National Numismatics Exhibition Awards, the NNPA-NNE Awards, to be held annually this year onwards, to honor
those luminaries, eminent collectors and scholars who with their own originality, initiative and innovation have been
committed to the cause of spreading the passion and made unparalleled contribution to the field of numismatics, notaphily
and philately.
Their endeavours have led to unravelling new history in each subject, adding further credibility and authenticity. The
entire fraternity has grown exponentially by their continued support. Exhibitions including NNE wouldn’t be a resounding
success year on year and reached this milestone without their constant support and encouragement
The NNPA-NNE Awards are presented in 4 categories to span an honest, unbiased selection of deserving and noteworthy
hobbyists who have contributed to fields of research, scholarly work and upliftment of trade in the fields of Numismatics,
Notaphily, Philately and Autographs.
The Award titles conferred in these fields are that of Maestro, GrandMaster, Doyen and the Lifetime Achievement Award.
The Maestro Award is conferred on the hobbyists whose contribution to research, scholarly work or in uplifting the trade
business in these fields in recent years has been noteworthy.
The GrandMaster Award is conferred on the hobbyists who’ve made prominent contributions to research, undertaken
significant scholarly work and been instrumental in establishment of and uplifting the trade business in these fields.
The Doyen Award is conferred on those eminent hobbyists who’ve passionately devoted themselves to research thereby
unravelling new vistas, done groundbreaking and unparalleled scholarly work and have been innovators and leading lights
of the trade business.
The LifeTime Achievement Award is presented to illustrious luminaries to honour their lifetime devotion to their passion
of Numismatics, Notaphily, Philately and Autographs.
At the 1st NNPA-NNE Awards we had the great privilege of hosting Shri. Alur Seelin Kiran Kumar, Padma Shri,
Distinguished Scientist (Apex) and Director, Space Applications Centre, Ahmedabad and Secretary, Department of Space,
Chairman, Space Commission and Former Chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), as the evening’s Chief
Guest.
He was instrumental in evolving successful strategies for CARTOSAT, Chandrayaan-1 and Mangalyaan, ISRO’s Mars
Orbiter Missions
PREM RATAN MARU FELLOWSHIP
In commemoration of the milestone of our 10th NNE held on the 22nd-24th February 2019,
and to reiterate our lifelong commitment to fostering knowledge and lending encouragement
to the Philatelic and Numismatic community, we at Marudhar Arts have instituted a
fellowship in the name of Shri Prem Ratan Maru, our guiding light and fountainhead of
inspiration, who, through his lifelong dedication to his passion for stamps has lit up the path
and been a source of inspiration for so many who have followed.
This Annual Fellowship with a total Rs.1,50,000 will be awarded by us, to further the cause
of Philatelic and Numismatic Research, Studies and other Academic pursuits.
We invite all interested candidates to send us a detailed report along with the scholarship
requirement.
