Data Representation Homework 6 Compression

This document provides instructions for Homework 6 on data compression. It asks the student to: 1) Explain why you would compress photograph files before emailing them and which form of compression (lossy or lossless) would be best for transmitting a draft manuscript or video recording. 2) Apply a lossless encoding algorithm to sample image data and report the result. 3) Identify if the encoding algorithm used in part 2 provides lossy or lossless compression and explain the answer.

Homework 6 Compression

Unit 8 Data representation

Homework 6: Compression
1. (a) Give two reasons why you might compress photograph files before emailing
them to a friend. [2]

Reason 1.

So that it isnt pixilated

Reason 2:

So that it has more soace

(b) Two forms of compression are lossy and lossless. State giving reasons which
would be the most suitable form of compression to use when transmitting:

(i) a draft manuscript for a book. [2]

A lossy compression would

(ii) A video recording which you have made of the school play. [2]

2. A lossless encoding algorithm used to compress an image converts the file by recording
the colour code, represented here by a letter, followed by the number of pixels of the
same colour, e.g. R4.

(a) Give the result of applying the algorithm to the following data for an image: [2]

G G G G G R R R Y Y Y Y Y Y R R R G G G G

(b) Is this lossy or lossless compression?

Explain your answer: [2]
