Chapter I

Background of the Study

The youth these days are always exposed to high functioning computers

and other devices. It particularly comes with soft-wares that enables them to

do countless things with it such as making their files in school namely essays,

presentations using slides, picture editing, spreadsheet for calculating

anything through the right use of solutions, questionnaires and etc. Those

things are just a small taste of what the soft wares are capable of as it depends

on the creativity of the user where mastery matters the most

Though, the soft wares are useful in education there is a certain problem

that stands out the most which is the lack of mastery in usage This will lead to

problems especially in doing their requirements in education. Majority of STEM

learners aren't equipped with the skills to do an excellent job in these

applications which limits their productivity because they don't know how to

use those applications perfectly. So, it is important for STEM learners to

master the soft-wares excel, power point, word, and publisher for more

proficient and fast creation of their school works.

3
This is one of the biggest problems in KNHS (Kalilangan National High

School) where some of the students doesn't have enough experience for easily

accessing and using Software’s (Word, Excel, Publisher and PowerPoint) in

computers for their education. There will be loads of problems specifically

difficulty in using functions within the soft wares of excel, power point, word,

and publisher I'll give more problems to those students without proper

experience and skills.

The main purpose of this research is to determine the problems and

issues of learners in KNHS (Kalilangan National High School) in their mastery

of computer soft-wares in making their requirements. The readers of this study

will be able to learn about why there are mastery problems of students when

using excel, power point, publisher, and word in computers. In addition, this

will be able to help find out the learning problems of students in application of

what's been taught to them.

Box 1 states the dependent variable of the proponents’ study which is

the lack of mastery in the usage of Microsoft-365 Soft-wares (Word,

PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher) in their requirements.

5
Box 2 explains the dependent variable of the research paper which in the

factors that halts students from improving their skill in using microsoft-365

soft-wares (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher). Does the lack of interest in the

usage of the following programs; excel, power point, word, and publisher affect

mastery, what initiatives does the grade 11 and 12 STEM learners take in

creating their requirements without enough knowledge in using the soft-wares

(Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher), and lastly is focusing on what parts of

each function in the following soft-wares (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher)

are the most difficult to learn or master.

Vygotsky's theory about social development states that STEM uses

constructivism in learning which enables learners to construct their knowledge

on their own or individual learning through various applications. This theory

relates to the study's goal which is to discover the struggles STEM learners

encounter without mastery in the usage of microsoft-365 and its importance in

education or learning through constructivism/individual learning. It also

addresses what problem stops students from absorbing applying the

information given to them about microsoft-365 soft-wares in their education.

6
Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the struggles encountered by Grade 11 &

Review of Related Literature

According to Castro Sánchez and Alemán (2011), ICT tends to expand

access to education. Through ICT, learning can occur anytime and anywhere.

Online course materials, for example, can be accessible 24 hours a day, seven

days a week. Teleconferencing classrooms allow both learners and teacher to

interact simultaneously with ease and convenience. Based on ICT, learning and

teaching no longer depend exclusively on printed materials. Multiple resources

are abundant on the Internet, and knowledge can be acquired through video

clips, audio sounds, visual presentation and so on. Current research has

indicated that ICT assists in transforming a teaching environment into a

learner-centered one. Since learners are actively involved in the learning

processes in ICT classrooms, they are authorized by the teacher to make

decisions, plans, and so forth (Lu, Hou and Huang 2010). ICT therefore

provides both learners and instructors with more educational affordances and

possibilities.

According to Kent and Facer (2004), Information and Communication

Technology (ICT) includes computers, the Internet, and electronic delivery

systems such as radios, televisions, and projectors among others, and is widely

used in today’s education field. School is an important environment in which

students participate in a wide range of computer activities, while the home

10
serves as a complementary site for regular engagement in a narrower set of

computer activities. Increasingly, ICT is being applied successfully in

instruction, learning, and assessment. ICT is considered a powerful tool for

educational change and reform. A number of previous studies have shown that

an appropriate use of ICT can raise educational quality and connect learning to

real-life situations (Lowther, et al. 2008; Weert and Tatnall 2005). As Weert and

Tatnall (2005) have pointed out, learning is an ongoing lifelong activity where

learners change their expectations by seeking knowledge, which departs from

traditional approaches. As time goes by, they will have to expect and be willing

to seek out new sources of knowledge. Skills in using ICT will be an

indispensable prerequisite for these learners.

According to Trisha (2015), Microsoft Office also known as MS Office, is a

popular software suite featuring many desktop publishing programs. It comes

with everything that may come into use in a classic office setting, hence the

name. Computer users have the option of several different Microsoft Office

suites intended for students, home users, small businesses and corporations.

What you choose depends on your own circumstances.   According to N.A

(2018). Microsoft’s Student Advantage Program provides free downloads of the

full version of Microsoft Office (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook,

OneNote, Publisher, Access, etc.) for all students in Broward County Public

Schools, for use on their personal and mobile devices (Android and iOS). The

Student Advantage program helps ensure students have access to the tools

they need to be successful in their education and are prepared for the

11
technology skills required in the workforce.   According to Sharma (2017).

Microsoft word is an important education application. It is important to process

raw facts into meaningful information. Microsoft word can benefits teachers

and students to create new innovative methods of learning and teaching.

Microsoft word and Microsoft office suite for students help to transmit

educational materials and practice systematically in school and university

faster with higher quality.

M.B Simanjuntak (2021), stated that, Microsoft Office 365 is more

effective than conventional methods in teaching writing; 2) Microsoft Office 365

is more effective than other online learning media ;3) There is an increasing

interest in language learning; and 4) there is an interaction between teaching

methods and students' creativity in learning English. This quasi-experimental

research was conducted at Saint Peter's Middle School in the 2020/2021

academic year. The sample of this study has six classes, namely the

experimental class which is taught using Microsoft Office 365 and the use of

Zoom as an online meeting. Each class consists of 17-22 students, with a total

sample value of 60 students. Samples were obtained using cluster random

sampling technique. The results showed that there was an increase in the

average score and implied that Microsoft Office 365 is an effective method in

teaching writing and is suitable to be applied to those who have high creativity.

According to D.A Carpenter (2018), This paper explains a four-year

longitudinal study of the assessment process for a Microsoft Office skills

12
course. It examines whether there is an increase in students’ knowledge based

on responses to pre- and post-surveys that asked students to evaluate how

well they can do particular tasks. Classical classroom teaching methods were

used in the first two years of the study; computer-mediated learning plus

classical methods were employed in the last two years. The study further

examines whether that change to computer-mediation made a difference in

student learning. It also examines whether students retain the knowledge as

measured by entrance surveys in a follow-on course. Results indicate that the

course does make a difference in student learning of Microsoft Office skills.

Results also indicate that computer-mediation does appear to make a positive

difference in the mastery of Microsoft Office skills in the basic computer skills

course although computer-mediation did not make a positive difference in

retention of that mastery at the beginning of the follow-on course.

According to K.M Abdulahi (2022), Microsoft introduced immersive

education solutions to equip teachers with modern tools to make their job

easier and effective. Microsoft technology such as computers, smart phones,

tablets or internet devices etc. Are example of Microsoft products that support

educators in keeping students engaged and safe in digital classrooms. The 21st

century education has required teachers and schools in Nigeria to embrace

Microsoft leaning technologies to effectively engage students in various

activities. This study, therefore, aimed to reveal teachers’ perceptions of the use

of Microsoft product. It was concluded that Microsoft need to support teachers

by equipping them with affordable products that will enhance classroom

13
organization and consequently facilitate teaching and learning processes. The

study encourages wider adoption of the Microsoft tools application by schools

in Nigeria.

P.A Catarina (2020), stated that, education found itself involved in a

whirlwind of metamorphosis, of transformations that required responses to the

emergencies dictated by the pandemic. In Portugal, many schools opted for

Microsoft 365 as the platform of choice for providing adequate resources for

teaching and learning processes, while also ensuring remote teaching in an

integrated and inclusive way.

14
CHAPTER III

Research Methodology

Research Design

This study is designed to address the factors why students have

problems in mastering the Microsoft-365 Soft-wares (Word, Excel, Publisher,

and PowerPoint) given that they already have been taught a teacher that is an

expert on that field. May it be the lack of time, lack of knowledge, device

compatibility issues, or the lack of interest in the usage of the following

programs: Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Word. This research aims to

gather information or resounding answers by doing a validated qualitative

survey in Kalilangan National High School SHS grade 11&12 level. The

research design that will be used in this study is the qualitative method for

the reason that it’ll never involve numbers in any way.

Research Locale

The study will be conducted at Ninoy Aquino, Kalilangan, Bukidnon at

Kalilangan National High School. The respondents will be given their

questionnaires during vacant times in their schedules. The researchers chose

15
the place of implementation because it’ll give the researchers the needed

information about the researchers’ study.

Research Respondents

All respondents will be carefully chosen through all the sections of grade

11&12 STEM at Kalilangan National High School. The following sections are

Sweet hoya, Elegance, Diligence, and Wisdom where the proponents will pick 5

students in each classroom of STEM. The researchers will gather data by

picking students with difficulty in using the following programs Word, Excel,

Publisher, and PowerPoint. The researchers took 5 respondents each section in

grade 11&12 in which it totals to 20 total participants.

Each respondent has been interviewed personally by the researchers. All

of them have been asked the following questions:

1. Do you know the basic formulas on excel such as addition,

multiplication, division, count function, and the computation of

general average?

2. Do you know how to create text documents, editing and formatting

the existing documents, making a text document interactive with

different features and tools, graphical documents, comprising images,

16
used by Authors and Researchers, detect grammatical errors in a text

document on word.

3. Have you experienced create presentations from scratch or a

template, add text, images, art, and videos, select a professional

design, add transitions, animations, and cinematic motion on

PowerPoint?

4. Have you tried creating brochures, greeting cards, catalogs, and

professional email newsletter on Publisher?

Sampling Procedures

The participants of this study will be chosen through the sampling

technique called purposive method. This technique will be used for the reason

that it is the most effective in getting clear and informative answers from each

respondents chosen. The sample size will be 5 per section mentioned above

and it will be carefully chosen by the researchers because of the purposive

sampling method used. This technique is built for time efficiency and to ensure

that all answers are acceptable in all ways.

Research Instrument

The research instrument for this study will be created based on the

questions of the study or the parts of the Significance of the Problem within

chapter one. Questionnaires or survey forms will be created carefully to create

questions in relation to our study to get results and answers from our several

17
respondents. The survey done will enable respondents to share their parts on

why they have problems in using Microsoft-365 programs specifically: Word,

PowerPoint, Excel, and Publisher.

Data Gathering

The data collected will be summarized by the researchers for each

question in the statement of the problem to get resounding results. The hard

copy of the respondents’ answers will be kept to justify why the researchers

achieved the results in the following chapters of the proponent’s study. The

survey will be done through the respondents’ classrooms during their free time

to have enough time in answering each question of the questionnaire. The

researchers will continue to add respondents if the results are not clear and

sure.

Data Analysis

The data will be analyzed through systematizing descriptive data

collected through surveys using validated questionnaires provided by the

proponents. Firstly, the data will be transcribed and read several times to gain

a deep and sure understanding of the respondents’ answers in each survey

forms given by the researchers. Secondly, the data will be arranged according

18
to the statement of the problem each question belongs in to avoid confusing

results on chapter 4. Lastly, the answers will be reviewed many times until the

proponents are satisfied to ensure the accuracy of representation of data on

the study.

CHAPTER IV

13/20 The respondents encounter lags when using

Microsoft-365 applications on their devices

This is one of the issues in using Microsoft-365 programs according to

many people. Majority of the respondents answered yes, thus, leading to one of

the many factors that adds up to system compatibility problems of Microsoft-

365 with their devices at hand. Lags lead to decreasing interests of the

27
respondents on using Microsoft-365, because of annoyance, therefore, leaving

the respondents uninterested on using the applications of Microsoft-365. Lag is

a huge contributor to leaving students uninterested in mastering the functions

of Microsoft-365 specifically: Word, Publisher, Excel, and Powerpoint. Minority

of the students doesn’t have any lag experiences on their devices because of its

specs according to the respondents.

3.2 What problems do you encounter when opening the Microsoft-365

Basing on the data above, there are bountiful problems faced by

students when using Microsoft-365. Namely, the lags, account sign-in issues,

file save problems, slow response time, and lastly update reboots without

permission given by the respondent. These issues will cause annoyance and

anger if this problem is constant when opening the Microsoft-365, thus,

leading to the decrease of interest on mastering the different functions of

28
Microsoft-365 (Word, Publisher, Excel, PowerPoint). There are also some that

answered none because of how advanced their devices are and can handle

Microsoft-365 with no issues.

3.3 How fast does your device respond when clicking a function in the

11/20 It takes a bit of time for the respondents’ devices to

respond. Mostly from 5 seconds to 5 minutes, which is

the longest.

In accordance to the information above, most of the respondents

encounter moderate to long response time when clicking functions on their

Microsoft-365 application specifically: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Publisher.

Many complained that it is taking too long to take action and is very

frustrating. Respondents with high functioning devices said that there are no

issues faced related to response time of clicking functions. One of the twenty-

five informant stated that it also depends if the laptop will run smoothly or

laggy.

29
3.4 Is your device up-to-date and has the ability to keep up with the

needed specs of Microsoft-365? Does it still cause issues? How?

Table 3.4

Majority of the Explanation

Answers

13/20 According to the respondents’, their devices aren’t up-to-

date, and it causes problems such as lags still.

Through the use of the validated questionnaires, the researchers were

able to collect the following data. The respondents that answered no,

outnumbered the other answers and their devices aren’t up-to-date. Because of

this, they encounter problems such as lags and slow response to clicking

functions on Word, Publisher, Excel, and PowerPoint. Some also said no but

with different a different reason, mainly because they don’t have devices that

could run Microsoft-365 and can’t always practice and improve their mastery.

The yes answers were outnumbered, their devices were updated to the latest

version and doesn’t cause issues. Therefore, most of the respondents’ answers

30
said no and their devices still kept causing lags and slow response and only a

small amount said yes on the question.

3.5 Which device is much more preferable in the usage of Microsoft-365

(Excel, Word, Publisher, and PowerPoint)? Why?

Table 3.5

Majority of the Explanation

Answers

17/20 The respondents stated that laptops are better at

handling Microsoft-365 and it is much more

preferrable than mobile phones.

Most of the respondents wrote that laptops are much more preferrable in

launching Word, Publisher, Excel, and PowerPoint. It is better because

according to them because laptops can perform more faster and smoothly than

mobile devices. They also added that laptops can be carried around thus,

causing it to be more efficient than other technologies that could perform

Micrososft-365 applications specifically: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and

Publisher. A small number of respondents also prefers computers because it is

one of the most powerful devices that can handle almost anything such as the

31
Microsoft-365 programs without problems. Thus, the most preferrable devices

to use in using Microsoft-365 are laptops.

32
Based on the answers of the 20 respondents, males have more struggles

on using Microsoft-365 because of their lack of skill in time management and

interest which lessens their time investment in mastering Microsoft-365.

Participants with the age range of 16-17 stated more struggles than the older

respondents according to the questionnaires filled with their information.

Therefore, females are more adept in using the Microsoft-365 programs and

gives more time in practicing it and making them have more skills than their

male counterparts.

a. Summary

The purpose of this research is to prove what kind of barriers stops SHS

STEM students in Kalilangan National High School from improving their

mastery in the usage of Microsoft-365 programs specifically: Word, Publisher,

Excel, and PowerPoint. This poses as a great obstacle to efficiency of doing

school projects and etc. by the learners. So, the researchers aimed to address

the problems and prove evidences for it.

The research was only limited to Kalilangan National High School SHS

STEM sections grade 11&12. To collect the qualitative data, validated

questionnaires were given to a total of 20 respondents. Respondents were

taken from the STEM sections Elegance, Diligence, Sweet hoya, and Wisdom

where 5 were purposively selected to collect accurate data. Chapter one was

mainly concerned with the purpose of the research study, introducing

the proposed study by stating and describing the problem of the mastery in

Microsoft-365 by the students. Chapter two then presented all of the related

34
literatures in accordance to the researchers/proponent’s study. Chapter three

on the other hand, discussed the methods and techniques used in the

collection of the qualitative data based on the respondents’ answers to the

questionnaires given, the mode of selecting respondents were purposive. Lastly,

chapter 4 was dedicated to how the data was analyzed which subsequently led

to the results presented on the study about the issues of mastery by SHS

STEM students in Kalilangan National High School in the usage of Microsoft-

365 programs specifically Word, Publisher, Excel, and PowerPoint.

b. Conclusion of the Study

The findings of the study revealed that the learners lacked the mastery of

these software applications due to the following identified contributing factors:

inadequate level of exposure, lack of compatibility with their devices on

Microsoft-365, lack of motivation, and improper guidance and instruction.

Therefore, it is recommended that educators and school administrators provide

learners with enough exposure to technology, access to newer and more

powerful versions of devices that could handle Micrososft-365, and provide

proper guidance and instruction. Additionally, a system should be

implemented to continuously enhance the learners` understanding of these

software applications to strengthen their mastery. By addressing these

challenges, learners can be more effective in using technology to enhance their

learning and personal development, ultimately increasing their opportunities in

the future.

35
c. Recommendations

The researchers recommend to broaden the range of strands in the study. It

is because this research is only limited to the STEM strand’s issues on why

they cannot master Microsoft-365 (Word, Publisher, Excel, and PowerPoint),

and different strands could offer more data and reasons that is a barrier to

them in mastering the given programs. This research would also be able to

assist future research conductors by offering the already existing information

in this study or to serve as a reference for them in creating their output.
