Hello! You’ve decided to apply for Code Next. We’re excited that you’re interested in our
program! Here are a few things you might want to know before you apply. If you have any
further questions, please reach out to [email protected].

We have two available programs, each with their own separate application:
1. Code Next Live, our program that takes place in live labs for students that live in
1) Oakland, California
2) New York City, New York and
3) Detroit, Michigan.
2. Code Next Connect, an online program open to high school students living
anywhere in the United States and Canada (outside of our live lab cities).

CODE NEXT LIVE

The Basics

What is Code Next, and Code Next Live?

Code Next is a free, computer science education program that meets Black, Latinx and
Indigenous students in their own communities and provides the skills and inspiration they need
for long and rewarding careers in tech and computer science-related fields.

“Live” means that it takes place in a physical lab. See more at g.co/codenext.
Is Code Next Live an online or in-person program?

Code Next Live is an in-person program. We have several physical labs—one in Oakland,
California, one in New York City (Chelsea), and one in Detroit, Michigan. We plan on opening
more labs in the future across the country.

Where are the Code Next Live Labs?

Our live labs are located in Oakland, California, New York City, New York and Detroit,
Michigan. See the exact addresses below:

Do you have to be fully vaccinated to enter a Code Next Live Lab?

No, as of April 11, 2023, Google has lifted the vaccination mandates and covid-19
vaccines are not required to enter our Code Next Labs.

What if I live in a city where there isn’t a Code Next lab?

We plan on opening more labs in the future in different cities across the country. Or, students
can apply for Code Next Connect, our online program.

How much does it cost to participate?

Code Next is free for all participants.

What do I receive if I get accepted?

A lot!
● Access to the Code Next Lab during operating hours which includes a micro-kitchen of
snacks, 3-D printers, a state of the art laser cutter, and a ton of other cool tech
equipment. We also offer free meals during program days.
● Program offerings learning things like game design, coding, and working with
hardware—all taught by real Googlers.
● Google and Code Next swag
● Your own Code Next email address
● The chance to get to know other students in the area also interested in technology and
coding
● Mentorship and advising—developing relationships that will last into the future!
● Opportunity to present your work to the broader Google community at our Demo Days
● A feature on the Code Next Students page (as shown here)

Eligibility Criteria

How does this work? Do I apply for individual programs?

By choosing to apply through this application, you are applying to be a member of the Code
Next program. You must be accepted through this application.

If you are accepted, you will have access to several courses and activities that we offer as a
Code Next member. We organize them into two groups: “exposure-based” (basic introductions
to computer science) and “immersion-based” (deeper, more practice-based coding). As a
member, you are eligible to enroll in any and all exposure-based programs, but will have to
apply separately for our immersion-based programs.

● Exposure-based programs (all open to 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders):
○ Clubs are seasonal programs that focus on one of three critical skills in
computer science, engineering, or leadership. Clubs happen for approximately
three months each—during the fall, winter, and spring. Club topics in the past
have ranged from game design to robotics to wearable tech.
○ Workshops are one-day experiences that include exposure to computational
thinking, making, design, and the misconceptions around computer science and
the tech industry.
○ College and Career Readiness is a one-year college prep course, strongly
recommended for juniors, that prepares students to apply for college.
 ● Immersion-based programs:
○ Team Edge (for any grade level) is a one-year program that focuses on building
critical skills in computer science & leadership, and includes 1:1 mentoring,
computer science summer institute, college readiness & career exploration.
○ Launch (for rising 11th and 12th graders) is a summer program on product
development, entrepreneurship, and branding. By the end of the summer,
students will have created and launched their own product or web app.

Can any student apply? Who is eligible for what programming?

Any student in 9th through 12th grade that is at least 13 years of age can apply. Because this is
a live, in-person program, you should live close to the lab you apply to. We will accept
applications from everyone, and strongly encourage Black, Latinx, and Indigenous students to
apply.

Our application for our live labs will open on July 10, 2023 at g.co/codenext/apply, and close on
August 4, 2023.

Do students need prior coding experience?

No! You can apply and become a member without any coding experience!

Application-Specific Questions

Do I just fill out an application, and that’s it?

We have a two-step application process.

Phase 1: Phase 2: Acceptance

Submit an Online Attend an in-person Design Into
Application Challenge Code Next Live!

First, you apply online, known as “Phase One”. If you are selected for “Phase Two”, you will be
emailed inviting you to partake in a live, in-person design challenge. You must do the design
challenge to continue your application to get into Code Next.

Once you have completed a design challenge, we will email you letting you know whether
you’ve been accepted into the Code Next program.

What are the deadlines on submitting?

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Make sure to apply before the application closing
date!

For the 2023-2024 program, we accept applications:

● Between July 10th and August 4th (to be considered for fall entry).

All required sections of the application must be completed and submitted to be considered for
membership.

What if I cannot attend the Design Challenge but would like to stay in the
admissions process?

If you cannot attend the Design Challenge dates, but would like to stay in the process, you can
submit a request to defer your application to a later timeline. Remember, attending the Design
Challenge is required for all applicants.

What if I want to make changes to my online application?

Your work on each page can be saved and viewed later while in progress if you need to come
back to it. Once your application is submitted, if you would like for your application or
responses to be deleted, you can submit a written request to [email protected].

How long does it take to complete an application?

Most applications will take approximately 20-30 minutes to complete.

CODE NEXT CONNECT

The Basics

What is Code Next Connect?

Code Next Connect is Code Next’s 100% virtual option. This free program provides online
computer science education programming for Black, Latinx, and Native students, providing the
skills and inspiration they need for long and rewarding careers in tech and computer
science-related fields. See more at g.co/codenext.

Is Code Next Connect an online or in-person program?

Code Next Connect is 100% online. It is open to students in the United States and Canada.

Who teaches in Code Next Connect?

Real Googlers! That’s right--you get to meet real Googlers and learn from them.

How much does it cost to participate?

Code Next Connect is free for all participants.

Do I need to provide my own computer or computer device?

Yes, you need to provide your own computer or device. However, we provide a few things to
help you out. See the next question.

What do I receive if I get accepted?

A lot!
● A $250 stipend in the form of a gift card
● A once-a-week club for eight months (October to June) learning things like game
design, coding, and working with hardware—all taught by real Googlers from across the
country.
● Google and Code Next swag
● Your own Code Next email address
● The chance to get to know ~25 other students from across the country, also interested
in technology and coding
● Mentorship and advising—developing relationships that will last into the future!
● Opportunity to present your work to the broader Google community at our Demo Days

How long are Clubs?

October - December Fall Clubs (9 weeks)

January - March Winter Clubs (9 weeks)

April - June Spring Clubs (9 weeks)

*We observe all national holidays and do not host programming on holidays.

What are the Club topics?

Right now, we plan on offering three clubs in the following categories:
● Coding: Web development, app development, artificial intelligence, game design,
automation… basically the stuff that makes the internet.
● Making: Physical computing, like working with robotics and hardware, meaning
Raspberry Pis and other circuitry.
● Design: UX/Web design, graphic design, and other types of digital art.

Eligibility Criteria

How does this work? Do I apply for individual programs?

At the moment, Code Next Connect has one experience available: Clubs, which are seasonal
programs that focus on one of three critical skills in computer science, engineering, or
leadership. Clubs topics in the past have ranged from game design to robotics to wearable
tech.

Clubs happen for approximately three months each—during the fall, winter, and spring—and
are open to 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders. However, we target mostly 9th and 10th graders.

If you are accepted, you get access to one full year in the program, where you will take part in
three different clubs during the fall, winter, and spring semesters. Following that, you will have
access to all of Code Next’s online resources, and be named an official Code Next alumnus.

How many Clubs are open each semester?

Students take one of three clubs each semester.

Additionally, you will be matched to a club in one of these 3 time zones—Pacific, Central, or
Eastern. If selected, you will be placed in a club with students with similar availability.

Can any student apply? Who is eligible for what programming?

Any student entering 9th through 12th grade that is at least 13 years of age and lives in the
United States or Canada can apply. However, we target mostly 9th and 10th graders. We will
accept applications from everyone, and strongly encourage Black, Latinx and Indigenous
students to apply. Do not apply for Connect if you live within a Live Lab city (Oakland, CA, New
York City, NY, or Detroit, Michigan).

 Application-Specific Questions

Do I just fill out an application, and that’s it?

The application is two parts.

1. First, you fill out an application.
2. Once you do that, you will receive a link to Google’s Online Challenge. Google’s Online
Challenge is a fair, unbiased opportunity for you to engage in Google's developmental
process. By participating in a timed online challenge, Google gains a better
understanding of your knowledge while also providing you with insight into our
developmental process.

Once you complete that, your application is complete! We will contact you if you get into the
program.

What does Google's Online Challenge entail?

The Online Challenge contains a series of logical reasoning and problem solving questions in
a multiple-choice format, with a 30-minute time limit for completion that will help us gain a
better understanding of your cognitive skills.

Look out for an email from Google’s Online Challenge Team during the week of August 7th
with all important details regarding the challenge. Kindly check all folders for the mail from:
[email protected] and reach out to the team at
[email protected] in case you aren’t able to find it by the day of the
challenge.

When will I have to participate in the Online Challenge?

Google's Online Challenge will go live after the applications are closed and will run from
August 17th-18th. There will be a 36 hour window to complete the online challenge and you
can participate anytime within the period indicated.

Is the Online Challenge Mandatory? What happens if I miss it?

The Online Challenge is a critical step in your Code Next application if you pass Phase 1. We
strongly urge you to participate in the challenge so that we can review your skill level and place
you with the most relevant team of students.

What are the deadlines on submitting?
