A spare parts list describes the equipment, gear and tools needed on board, to carry out
emergency repairs of critical machinery and electrical equipment.
maintain your vessel’s core functions (including steering, flotation, navigation and propulsion
systems and pollution prevention equipment)
make sure your vessel, its crew and passengers are safe.
You need to include your spare parts list when you send your application for a Maritime Transport
Operator Certificate (MTOC) to Maritime New Zealand (MNZ). The spare parts list is part of your MOSS
(Maritime Operator Safety System) Operator Plan.
Remember to check and update this list. If appropriate, include the spare parts in your maintenance
plan. Also, make sure that each spare part is on board before you depart.
To learn more about maintenance plans, refer to Developing a maintenance plan on the MNZ website.

Use this template to help develop and document your spare parts list (or lists). This will ensure your
spare parts list is relevant, complete and in a form that is acceptable to the Director of MNZ.
Surveyor’s role
We recommend you work with a recognised surveyor to develop your spare parts list.
Although this list does not need approval from a surveyor, every vessel needs a spare parts list
(amongst other things) for a surveyor to issue a Certificate of Survey, on or after 1 July 2014.
