Abstract

Students have to work and study at the same time to make a living and achieve
their dreams. This research gives a voice to students who, as working students,
struggle a lot with their daily lives. The study used a qualitative approach among
(10) students who were working while studying in Talisay City, Cebu. These working
students were selected on the basis of their experience and served as primary
informants. Using structured interviews and naturalistic observations in local
dialects, the researchers were able to freely list their word for word accounts and was
is being used as main narratives. (1) Having good time management
despite hectic schedules; (2) Benefiting from studying while working; (3) Finding
relevance to the current job; (4) Overcome inferiority complex; (5)
Fatigue while working; (6) Spending the salary for educational and personal. It is
concluded that working students are doing whatever it takes to complete their
education. Dealing with adversity is a working student's natural enemy. However, this
does not prevent them from pursuing their life goals and ambitions. Overcoming
challenges is the result of their own work, which can make them more independent,
resilient and responsible individuals. For further research, researchers can conduct
further research on the life experiences of working students not only in Cebu but also
in other cities.

INTRODUCTION

Rationale Of The Study

Students have to work and at the same time study to support themselves in order

to fulfill their dreams (Pregoner et al. 2020). Working while studying is basically

dictated by the budget requirements. They work to cover setbacks in different kinds of

understudies. To increase the salary, improving the understanding of the studies, in

achieving their future goals. Based on the study of Pregoner et al. (2020) Students

working and studying often do poorly and are unable to complete their studies in record

time due to fatigue, stress, absenteeism, and missed deadlines. Schooling and working

has been shown to reduce the amount of time spent studying and negatively impact

academicperformance (Tetteh 2019). Quality time management is an essential tool for

improving academic performance and reducing depression, anxiety and stress among

working students. However, Pregoner et al. (2020) suggested that very working

students should investigate their time management to improve their performance both

at work and in academics.

The COVID-19 pandemic has devastated employment worldwide, especially, that

of non-regular workers. In the Labor Force Survey (January 2019 to May 2020),

Pedroso et al. (2022) investigate the status of employment of working students. They

investigated changes in the employment situation of students. The number of working

students reported in the labour force survey has declined since March 2020, falling by

780,000(46%) in April. 37% of students at universities surveyed about how they were

living expressed anxiety disorders about living costs and tuition fees, and more
2
students said they were worried regarding both their low-evaluated health and their

financial vulnerability.Almost half of working students lost their jobs during pandemic in

Japan, Ghana, United States of America, Spain, Germany, Ethiopia.

The Pandemic has brought dramatic changes to various institutions around the

world (Pedroso 2021). It facilitated the implementation of new normal learning through

alternative learning modalities. Working students shown to face challenges during the

pandemic because they perceive their emotional and physical limitations. A study by

Antipolo, J. (2021) found that working students are more likely than non-working

students to experience financial hardship due to the pandemic, including loss of salary

from family members, loss of salary from on- and off-campus employment, and

increased living and technical costs.

There are currently about 216,000 working students on the Philippines juggling in

their schools and work. According to the data Commission on Higher Education (CHED

2019) about 8% of all university students in the Philippines is a working student. The

reason students work is due to family needs and to meet quick necessities to help

them study in need and their future goals (Tetteh et al. 2019) Only half of the employed

students can finish college, as many cannot concentrate on their studies, while others

have poor health, and other give up because of financial problem (CHED).

Working students in the Philippines can also become financially independent

through working despite financial problems. To determine the job options of working

students in the Philippines, I. e , online jobs paid corporate internships, fast food crews,

school jobs (Pedroso et al. 2022) It allows a working student to share responsibility for

paying exam fees, giving them a sense of financial independence, account monitoring
3
skills. Filipino students struggle because they must maintain academic performance in

order to avoid receiving a failing grade and achieve the standards in their work in order

to keep their jobs. One of the researchers, who also happened to be a working student

in Talisay City. She has been in a predicament in balancing work and study. According

to her, time is her greatest ally and enemy at the same time. As a working student

herself, She knows the importance on how to manage time properly. Despite knowing

the consequences as a working student, she still pursues education for it is one of the

most important things that a human being can possess. Hence, the researcher would

wish to further investigate other working students experiences.

Thus, the purpose of the study is to explore and interpret the lived experiences of

the Working students living in Talisay City, Cebu.

4
Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this study was to explore and interpret the lived experience of

working students in Talisay City.

This study specifically seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What are the lived experiences of working students?

2. Based on experience on participants, what themes can be generated?

3. Based on the findings, what can be recommended?

5

Scope and Delimitation

The study was to explore the different experiences of the working students. The

study were focused on the working students in Talisay City, Cebu. The interview of this

study was limited to the 10 female and male working students. To gather the data,

each will be interviewed. During march to May of 2023 in the whole Talisay City. The

researchers may experience challenges in terms of financial problems, shyness, and

will be asked for snacks.

6

Significance of the Study

Themes that were garnered from Juggling Between Work and Studies: The

Experiences Of Working Students will be instrumental to the following :

1.)The Teachers - This study can benefit the teacher to gain insights about the life or
the experiences of a working students.

2.)Department Of Education (DepEd) - It can benefit the DepEd because it can gain
insights about the situation or hardship of being a working student. And so that, they
can take action about this. It could also help the DepEd to get some reference about
the experiences of working students.

3.)Students - The study will benefit to the students for them to have a perception and
perspective on what it’s like to be a working student.

4.) Parents and Guardians - This study will give the parents and guardians the
opportunity to guide their working students with the problems regarding in school.

5.)Future researchers- The themes, findings and recommendations in this study can
serve as a reference for future researcher for further studies on working students.
7

Definition of Terms

To give a more detailed and to specify this study, the following terms are defined

operationally:

Juggling - the manipulation of one object or many objects at the same time

Student - a person who is studying at a school or college.

Talisay City - is a 3rd class component city in the province of Cebu, Philippines.

Work - activity involving mental or physical effort done in order to achieve a

purpose or result.

Working Student - students who are working or having a part-time job while
studying.
Chapter 2

Review Of Related Literature

The trend of students who also work part-time is growing every day. Students at

universities sometimes work part-time jobs due to budgetary constraints and

experience needs. They are ordinary people who do not have professional or high-

paying jobs. Some of them work in libraries, cafeterias, staff rooms, and some school

offices. Working students are generally forced to work because they cannot afford to

attend college or even maintain their family income.

According to the study of Rockika (2017), young people in England reported that

27% studentsat the adolescence age undertake both studying and having a part-time

job. However, Rockika (2017) didn’t conduct any studies about adolescent age who

are working and studying in other countries.

According to the study by Gyambrah et al. (2017), it is found that there is higher

stress levels in part-time students. This can affect their commitment to learning and

lead to a stressful academic experience. However, they only conducted studies on the

psychological effects and not pertaining the physical toll on which part time students

may experience.

In the study of Naylor (2021), many teenagers want to work when they turn 16.

Each of them has their own reasons why they really want to work while studying, and

most of the students' reasons are that they like to help their parents, others want to
experience a job, and others want to work so that they have money to spend and pay

the school fees— working while studying has both positive and negative effects on
10

students. The negative effects are that the students are getting less sleep, having

difficulty spending time with friends and family, and get stressed at work and with the

things to do at school. The positive effects are that the student can manage their time

wisely, become independent person, and learn something not just at school but also at

work. However, Naylor (2021) didn’t conclude on his studies ages 17 and above

wanting to work.

For James (2022), many students work a part-time job, and some of them want

to help their parents and make some extra money to spend, but there is a negative

impact on their academic performance at school while they are working, including low

grades, poor participation in class activities, lack of time for studying, among others.

Studying while having a part-time job is very difficult because it can also affect negative

impacts on their health, such as headaches, sleeping difficulties, exhaustion, etc.

Working while studying takes away their free time, and they can't do exercise, or spend

time with their friends, family, and pets. Some students who are working can balance

their time wisely, but some can't, and those are the students who can easily have a

negative impact on their academic performance or their health. However, James

(2022) did not mention on his study the positive impact of a working student.

Barbanchon et al. (2021), mentioned that most students must work to pay their

tuition and other school fees. Working while studying can be stressful. Working

students need to be aware that they can't concentrate on their studies and don't have

much time to finish their homework, and this could have an impact on their grades.

Working during the day and studying at night can make them feel tired and lack sleep,

and there is a possibility that they will get sick. Studying, working, and family life
11

without having a negative impact on their studies is extremely difficult. Some negative

impacts are lower grades in school, increased stress, may not have time to complete

their schoolwork, and others. However, they did not conclude on his research the

benefits of working and studying.

Based on the research by Mayan (2018), she examines how working while

studying affects Spanish students' performance in upper secondary school. It creates

the students' grade performance as passing, repeating, or dropping out, using their

educational and employment histories. From the first year a student enrolls to the year

they graduate, evaluating the impact of working while studying. Working while taking

classes, significantly lowers the likelihood of passing and raises the risk of failing the

first year of upper secondary school or repeating. Underestimating the negative impact

of working would result from failing to account for selection into working while studying.

However, Mayan (2018) did not conclude on his research how working while studying

can affect those who are in Tertiary level students.

For Ali (2017), students with part-time jobs have less time to study. Working part-

time allows students to gain experience and improve their skills in preparation for

future employment. Working students feel tired after working, which results in their not

having enough time to study after work hours. Many students work longer hours than

they are entitled to work. Moreover, some students have study plans to know how to

manage time, such as what time to study and when to work. However, Ali (2017) did

not elaborate the psychological and physical toll that this working students have

experienced. And also not concluding the the benefits of juggling work and study.
12

Based on the study of Chiliba et al. (2020), the study looked at how working while

going to school at a college or university affected educational mismatches in the job

market in Zambia. In the study, extended ordered probability regression models that

take self-selection and sample-selection bias into account were estimated using data

from the 2018 School to Work Transition Survey. The research indicated that working

while studying significantly decreased the likelihood of being under educated for the

job but significantly increased the likelihood of being over educated for the job,

suggesting that additional support to enable youth to get exposure to the proper

amounts and types of work during college or university studies could potentially

increase productivity by ensuring job matching. The potential negative impacts of

integrating learning and employment should be taken into account by those planning

strands for developing workplace skills. They did not conclude that the mismatching in

the job also happens in the other nation. How will this affect a certain country besides

Zambia.

Amor et al. (2020), studied the impact of working while a student on academic

students' academic performance at Best link College of the Philippines, focusing on the

various elements that affect their performance in class. Descriptive approach was

employed to describe various explanations for why students work while they learn.

Working students typically experience scheduling issues because their work and

school schedules do not align. As a result, other factors like distance, financial

problems, the physical environment, and the psychological environment also have an

impact on how well students do. While working to support themselves financially and

attending school to enhance their lives, students struggle to strike a balance. Students
13

have control over their sleep; therefore, students are more likely to sacrifice sleep so

as to maintain balance when they are subjected to increasing demands or have a low

work-life balance. However, this study has only provided a limited amount of research

on the factors that influence college students' ability to maintain a healthy balance

between their responsibilities at work and at school.

Based on the study by Vernet (2019), students become anxious and perverse

when they cannot take a break. Students' internal and physical capacities are put

under a great deal of stress when they've got to work and study simultaneously.

Students are certain to suffer significant health problems as a result of this way of life.

Sleep deprivation may affect future health issues. Young and enthusiastic students

believe they can climb trees without considering the impacts of their actions. In

addition, students struggle to keep up with the quantum of information presented at the

university, fail to complete all assignments, and accordingly fall behind in the class.

One side will suffer because students who work while studying will never be able to

balance these two conditioning perfectly. Students won't attempt to write essays or

complete other educational tasks correctly, wasting an opportunity to acquire high

quality knowledge. In fact, students can engage in both of this conditioning

contemporaneously, but doing so will have a significant negative impact on their health

and will have long-term impacts on them. This is somewhat advantageous because the

student has the best understanding of the content and relevance of their part-time job

to their studies. However, there could also be drawbacks to letting students make this

classification decision for themselves.

14

According to Kremers (2021), some students could also be unsure whether their

jobs actually count as being related to the academic strands because they share some

similarities with their studies. Students who worked fewer or no hours were expected to

be less stressed than people who worked a lot. In addition to academic performance, it

was anticipated that a student's hours worked would have a negative impact on their

academic involvement. This was due to the assumption that students who work long

hours have less time to devote to their studies and are less present on campus. But

Kremers (2021) did not generalize those students who have good time management

while juggling both work and study. Being irresponsible resonates to these justification.

According to Dowd (2017), working while studying is a hindrance to a working

student. Students work for a variety of reasons, including the desire to be financially

independent, to assist their families financially, to save money for college, or to save

money for themselves. Working too many hours could affect your academic

performance in school. Studies found that there were advantages and disadvantages

to working while studying. The advantages are that it could sharpen your skills and

boost your self-confidence. Working experience allows you to narrow down the list of

possible careers in which you may be interested. While the disadvantage is that it

distracts them, there is little benefit for them as a student. By weighing carefully the

pros and cons of working while studying before applying for a job. It is better to prepare

since some students do thrive when working while studying. However, the research did

not mention how will this affect those working student who manage well enough in their

studies and work.

15

According to Muluk (2017), co-curricular activities are some of the many part-time

employed students who have very little participation. Working students, both males,

and females worked 20-40 hours per week. Some students work to earn money, but

others work to spend their leisure time and improve their personal skills in activities

they enjoy. At some point, many part-timers find it difficult to manage their time for

academics. A part time job can result in advantages for themselves or disadvantages

for others, but it depends on how they will handle it. However, it does not mention

those students who have big participation towards co-curricular activities. How about

those working students who is working below 20-40 hours per week? Will it put them in

a favorable position to participate co-curricular activities.

According to Ashworth et al. (2017), empirical studies have failed to reach a

consensus about the impact of working while in school on work and educational

outcomes. Results varied according to the methodology used to address student

choices for employment (i.e., choice questions involving comparing students who

chose to work with those who chose to work). ) – Issues that usually confuse the

impact of working while in school. However, these studies did not reach a consensus.

Therefore, by not reaching a conclusion to a study it will uncertain on how will these

affect the working students.

Based on Anderson (2017), working while studying can be a character-building

experience forstudents because doing so teaches them about

responsibility, commitment, initiative, independence and accountability. These character

traits are valuable in many areas of life and can even help students who are applying

to a University. Students that work as a part-timer in a definite field such as (i.e

16

cafeterias, fast food chains, clerk etc) can build as much character as more notable

academic undertakings, so it is important that students know how their job helped them

grow as a person. However, Anderson did not mention in these studies students who

are still not applying to a certain University.

According to Lessky and Unger (2022), student employment is widespread in

many European countries, raising questions about how working while studying affects

student retention. First and foremost, students who work long hours that is,

undergraduates are more likely to engage in temporary employment. However, little

attention has been paid to investigating the factors that predict students' decision to

engage in time-consuming work while in college, and little distinction has been made

between majors.

Base on the study of Landsteadt et al., (2017) more and more young people are

juggling struggling financially with both part-time andprecarious work and studiesor

being poor and still struggling to establish themselves in employment or

relationships. However, they did not conduct any studies about young adults who

juggles in studying while working.

According to Scherer et al., (2017), college curricula are designed to accommodate

student workload peaks and troughs, often requiring work-life balance to be managed

without institutional support. Non-cognitive Personal behavior, i.e student perceptions

of time management are also effective predictors of educational success. Poor time

management makes it difficult for students to plan their studies and usually leads to

anxiety and excitement during assessments at the end of the course. However they did
17

not conduct any studies if this design would accommodate students who are in their

Senior year or students who are in Junior year.

Based on the study of Chantrea et al., (2017), students have different reasons for

working. Another common factor is that students who work will become financially

independent and cover daily expenses in their lives. However, they did not conduct any

studies how this would affect students academic performance.

A study of Giray et al., (2022) highlights the fact that many Filipino college

studentsare considering online education is beneficial during a pandemic.Offers a

range of amenities and eliminates the need to travel thereschool.A good number of

working students have the opposite viewopinion by acknowledging that they are

experiencing challenges transitioning to new learning structure by questiontechnology

and internet access, mental health, spending, time management. However, they did not

conduct any studies regarding about is online education is beneficial in other countries.

Research Methodology

Research Design

The study was making use of phenomenological studies. Data that were collected

during the interview are relevant only to working students in Talisay City, Cebu.

Participants

The participants of this study was ten (10) working students from all over Talisay

City, Cebu.

Sampling Method

Implementing with the use of purposive method. The participants of this study were

working students throughout in Talisay City, Cebu. The researchers was utilizing this

sampling method to ensure that every member of the participant had a chance to

be picked out.
20

Research Environment

The research was conducted in the whole Talisay City, Cebu. Talisay was founded

in 1648 as an estate owned by the Augustinians. In 1849 it was converted into a

municipality. In the early 2000’s the municipality of Talisay was converted into a city

through Republic Act No. 8979.Talisay is now 3rd class component city in

the province of Cebu, Philippines. The city is currently governed by Mayor Gerald

Anthony Vargas Gullas Jr.

The age group with the highest population in Talisay City is 15 to 19, with 24,438

individuals. Those aged 15 up to 64, roughly, the economically active population and

actual or potential members of the work force, constitute a total of 65.18% (148,382).

Research Procedure

After completing Chapters 1, 2 and 3. The researchers had begun the interview.

The researcher was preparing an interview after consulting with our practical

research adviser, Mr. Bernard Evangelicom V. Jamon. For possible minor mistakes in

regard to every statements and questions that were

formulated. The researchers was conducting interviews in Talisay City, Cebu.

The researchers would followed the steps to collect data. Next, the

researchers would send an inquiry letter to ten (10) working students, asking

permission to conduct an interview study about the experiences of a working student.

During the interview, the researchers had explained to the respondents

the significance of their responses to the study. The researcher would explained some

terms and deliberately because they are the subject of the study. The researchers had

then requested to the respondents to answer the interview questions.

Secondly, the researchers would record the interview and they had transcribed the

data that was collected. After the transcribing, the data had undergo coding and the

data that was obtained was examined and the researchers had interpreted the themes

that was collected throughout the study.

The theme that the researchers expected to be gathered throughout this interview,

is to shed light more about the different perspectives of each working students and

how they had confront their own challenges and what were their resolutions to the

matter that would help them pursue and continue their dreams.

After the respondents had answer the interview questions, the researchers had

collected and corresponded the data for interpretation. Based on the data collected,

24

the researchers would devised and suggested conclusions and recommendations

about the study.

The researchers would present data to the judges in order to hear their

own insights, feedbacks and recommendations about the researchers topic.

Eventually, the researchers would submit the final manuscript to the subject

adviser, Mr. Bernard Evangelicom V. Jamon, for the archival of the manuscript.

25

Treatment of Data

The researchers used the Colaizzi method for the treatment of data

1. Familiarization The researchers familiarizes the data by

reading all the answers of the participants
for several times.
2. Identifying significant statements The researchers identifies all the
statements in the answers of the
participants that have direct relevance to
the study.
3. Formulating Meanings The researchers generate meaning from
important statements.
4. Clustering Themes The researchers grouped identified
meanings to themes that have similarities.

5. Developing an exhaustive description The researchers writes a full description of

the study by including all the themes that
are generated.
6. Producing the fundamental structure The researchers condenses the in-depth
description.
7. Seeking verification of the fundamental The researchers take back the
structure fundamental structure statement to all the
participants and ask whether it captures
their experiences.
26

Ethical Consideration

Participants personal data is sensitive and treated with the utmost

confidentiality.Disclosure of the confidential information of the The researchers

conducted the research in accordance with ethical standards. The researchers would

be held accountable if there’s any possible disclosure towards that information.

There would be no form of bribing from the researchers towards the participants

during data collection.

The participants identities are important. For that reason, the researchers would be

responsible if any information about their responses and the participant identities had

been leaked. Research participants are not coerced to provide any of their personal

information.
Chapter 4

FINDINGS AND ANALYSIS

This chapter includes the presentation, analysis and interpretation of the data that

are being collected from the interviews with the participants.

The researchers had examined the working student’s real life experiences and the

dreams and their ambitions towards in their future goals in life. After coding the

process, themes that are being generated are the following.

1. Having good time management despite hectic schedules.

The researchers come up with the theme because of how the working students did

a good job in balancing both work and study. They organized their time well enough

even they have packed itinerary.

These are evident through the following responses.

“Oo, kay akong time sa school kay every night then, pang morning ako hatagan ang

akong business sa braces og time.”(Yes, because my time at school is every night

then, in morning, I will give time to my work).

-Participant A

“Yes, of course! Kay kuan if working ko kay kuan mana syncronoze raman mi no?

Online, face-to-face. Mabalance rana nako.”(Yes, of course! If I’m a working student,

28

the schedule differ because it’ll change from face-to-face, online class. That’s why I

can balance it well enough).

-Participant C

“Naa raman siguro, ma-manage raman siguro kay dali raman ang STEM”(Maybe there

is, it's manageable because STEM is easy).

-Participant D

“I think yes, mas may ko mo manage og time maka-ingon ko na may ko mo manage

og time because bisan paman og kapoy tiring kaau akong trabaho, hectic akong

schedule but na maintain man nako ang good grades, mao nang maka ingon ko na

okay ra gihapon.” (I think yes, I believe I have a good time management and I can say

that I’m really good at managing my time it’s because even if I’m tired with my work,

my schedule is hectic, but I still maintain my good grades and perform well in my class.

That’s why I can say it’s okay ).

-Participant E

The researchers implied that despite while working and studying they still managed to

juggle between hectic schedules. Having self-determination to accomplish tasked that

are assigned and being efficient and effective to perform as a student can help them

propel in academically manner while working. As commented by one of the

participants, “I think yes, I believe I have a good time management and I can say that

I’m really good at managing my time it’s because even if I’m tired with my work, my

schedule is hectic, but I still maintain my good grades and perform well in my class.
29

That’s why I can say it’s okay (P E)”. This means that the participant had productively

managed her time while working and studying.

According to (Sayari et al., 2017), the students must schedule their time effectively

to catch up on lessons, assignments, projects, and other school requirements.

However, they must continue to perform well at work in order to keep their

employment, as losing them would have a severe effect on their academic

achievement. Every person's ability to manage time is essential.

Regardless of one's position in life, time management and utilization are equally

important attending classes on time and meeting project and completing projects and

assignments before the due dates are crucial obligations for students who want to

raise their grade point averages. While people in offices, colleges, and other facilities

value time differently, employees and students should observe and follow standard

time (Sayari et al., 2017). As a result, the working-students’ success in balancing their

work-study will make an impact on their engagement and well-being as a student

(Calderwood & Gabriel, 2017).

2. Benefiting from studying while working

The researchers come up with the theme based on the responses of the

participants as how they find importance of being employed while schooling. It helps

them to be more responsible and independent for themselves.

These are evident through the following responses.

“Oo, para di nako magsalig sa akong ginikanan.”(Yes. For me, not to rely to parents).

-Participant F
30

“Naa gyod nay binipisyo except, sa makatabang sa skwela maka, maka tabang pod ni

siya sa mga gasto nako mga mapalit, ra og mga naa koy tarong makaon kada adlaw

ba.”(It has benefits in addition to helping me study, it can also help me spend on what I

want to buy and have something to eat on a daily basis.)

-Participant G

“Maka benepisyo ni siya kay maka kaon kog tarong niya makatabang ko sa pamilya og

maka skwela sad ko.”(It is beneficial because I can eat well, I can help my parents and

I can study too).

-Participant H

“Ahm..sa akong kuan is murag naa siyay benefits kay sa akong kuwaon nga korso is,

business administration so about siya sa business so karon nga sa senior high ko naa

nakoy experience sa kanang business.”(Ahm.. to me, it seems like it has benefits

because my course is business administration, so it’s about business. So now that I

am in senior high, I have experienced in that business.)

-Participant I

The researchers implicated that whilst being employed can help cultivate the

responsibilities of individual specifically, the working students. Juggling work and study

can help them to be self-sufficient and being able to maintain good time management

skills. As one of the participants commented “It is beneficial because I can eat well, I

can help my parents and I can study too (P G).” The experience that can be obtained

can help them to be self-independent and having an overall satisfaction in their way of

life.
31

Accordingly, Sanchez-Gelabert et al. (2017) mentions that adults who work and

study concurrently gain industry-related skills at their respective workplaces, which

cannot be solely obtained at university. With these advantages, students who work and

study at the same time is reaping benefits while employed.

As stated by Caldwell (2017), some significant benefits that work provides to

working students are relating to working experience, time management skills, freedom

from debt, and better academic performance. The extra income stream is one of the

benefits of working while studying. Further, it also enhances and establishes the skills

of working students during their part-time job that may have actual impacts in their later

careers. Thus, those who have a positive attitude towards money will actively seek out

money management knowledge as a way to enhance their skill set (Sundarasen et al.,

2017).

3. Finding relevance to the current job

The researchers come up with the theme as how they discover their present job to

be significant to their future goals. And by being exposed to work that can helped them

gained difference kinds of experiences.

These are evident through the following experiences.

“Oo na, for example nana koy experience unsa magtrabaho niya di lalim ba.” (Yes, for

example, I already have experienced on how to work and it’s easy).

-Participant B
32

“Yes, kay bisan nag work ko kay murag gani ko makabalo gani ko sa situation like ay

kinahanglan dyud diay kog kuan kanang ganing murag na train ko sa akong

kaugalingon kabalo nako unsay mga responsibilities sa kuan…. mao na.”(Yes, even

though I’m working, I just thought I know things what is needed and by training myself

to know the responsibilities).

-Participant C

“Yes, tungod anang settings sa akong life is naka ingon ko na need dyud diay nako na

need dyud ko motrabaho tarongon ko ni bisan lisod ni siya murag nahulog nani siya na

guide nako na mag tinarong ko kay dili diay lalim ang kanang moskwela ka na ingon

ani para dili sad nako gusto ba na maagi.an sad ni sa akong igsuon mao nang ako

mismo tarongon sad nako akong kaugalingon.”(Yes, because the situation in my life.

That’s why I say that I really needed to find work. I should do it properly even if it’s

difficult this could serve as a lesson that I must study hard because it’s not that easy

being a working student. And I don’t want this to happen to my siblings that’s why I

must handle myself properly).

-Participant E

“Oo magamit dyud na siya nako kay ang helper man gud course man gud na siya sa

balay. So, in the future magamit sad na siya nako. Dili ra kaayo helper ra ha? Naa

rasad koy mga experiences for the future”. (Yes, it could be of use. Being a helper, it is

already a course itself. So, in the future I can use it to my benefit. Not just being a

helper, but I could use my experiences for the future).

33

-Participant F

The responses implicates that finding significance in their current job will greatly

benefit them in the future. As one of the participants commented, “Yes, it could be of

use. Being a helper, it is already a course itself. So, in the future I can use it to my

benefit. Not just being a helper, but I could use my experiences for the future (P F)”.

According to O’Shea (2020) students increasingly recognize undertaking work

experience as a good strategy for obtaining employment after graduation. The growing

number of working students can be attributed partly to changes in the student

population with regard to social-demographic and socioeconomic characteristics.

For instance, Duckworth (2018), there might be personality attributes such as

ambition, grit, or perseverance that predispose individuals to work during college and

also lead to superior jobs after college with higher wages, creating a spurious

correlation between working in college and higher post-college. Possessing and honing

qualities being mentioned above can help pave the way in ensuring a successful

future.

4. Overcoming inferiority complex

The researchers come up with the theme as how most of the participants triumph

over differences from their classmates in spite of being a working student.

These are evident through the following responses.

“Dili. Kay kasagaran sa akong mga classmates kay working students.”(No, I don’t feel

lesser because most of my classmates are working students).

34

-Participant A

“Dili raman, kay nindot raman sad ako grades so dili ko kakuan nga lahi kos uban

estudyante.”(Not really, I don’t feel being lesser to them because I have good grades

so I can’t say that I’m different to other students).

-Participant D

“No, dili ko maka ingon ko inferior ko or the other way around superior ko, dili ko maka

ingon ana, kay it’s because ang classroom settings nga naa ko mga taw na naka

surround sa akoa, wala na ge pa feel sa akoa ila ge embrace og ila ge sabot akong

situation.”(No, I can't say that I'm lesser or the other way around that I'm greater to my

classmates, I can't say that, because it's because of the classroom settings that I have

people who surround me, they don't feel that way instead they embrace me and they

understand my situation).

-Participant E

“Para nako is dili kay kabalo manko sa kalisod sa mga every working student, so dili

gyod ko magpataas nga ako kuan sa ilaha.”(For me, nothing because I know the

hardships of every working. So, I never thought of being lesser to them).

-Participant I

The researchers implication is that by compensating the drawbacks as a working

student, it is through efforts and achievements. As commented by one of the

participants, “Not really, I don’t feel being lesser to them because I have good grades

so I can’t say that I’m different to other students (P-D)”. Overcoming indifference

towards the full time working students is the least of concern to them. But instead, they
35

persevere and do things casually that help them gain the confidence to have the image

of being a normal student.

According to Abdalla, Z. (2020), that developing a healthy sense of superiority,

which includes feeling competent and capable in their talents, may help persons with

inferiority complexes overcome their poor self-esteem.

For instance, Friehe et al., indicates that if a person incorporates the object of

comparison into his system, the threat of others’ success will be significantly

reduced(Friehe et al., 2021). It is believed that by compensating can only be completed

by individuals with inferiority, that is, there is only self-compensation without

compensation for others.

One of the participants commented “Not really, I don’t feel being lesser to them

because I have good grades so I can’t say that I’m different to other students (P-D).”

As stated by Millard (2019), that students manifest significant developments in

confidence, a diversity of skills are improved, and students declare that they are more

motivated to succeed in their academic careers.

5. Facing fatigue while working

The researchers come up with the theme as how most of the participants felt tired

and worn down from their job while schooling and employed. And having difficulties to

pass their school activities on time.

These are evident through the following responses.

36

“Project nya naa sad kay trabaho di mabuhat dayun.”(Project and work because you

can't do on time).

-Participant B

“’Schedule, time, mga panghatag nga activities nya kapoy na ang lawas nya kapoy pud

ug answer’(Schedule, time, activities to be given, my body is tired and answering is

also tiring).

-Participant D

“Lisod og kakapoy kay dii gyod siya lalim”(It's hard, it's tiring because it's not easy).

-Participant G

“Lisod dyud uy, as working student bitaw kay maglisod sad kag balansi sa akong oras

kay siyempre online man sad dyud ko dayon lisod kaau ba kay kanang dili baya mag

depende akoang trabaho kanang usab usab baya na kada adlaw kay lahi lahi sad raba

na. “(It is difficult, as a working student. It was really difficult because I have difficulties

in balancing my time, I’m in online class and it doesn’t depend on my work because it’ll

change drastically).

-Participant F

The researchers implies is that being a working student can be an overwhelming

lifestyle. Working students tend to feel exhaustion, fatigues and burnt out. These can

heavily affect their psychological, physical well-being that can be detrimental to their

academic performance in school. This is apparent to one of the participants comments

37

“Schedule, time, activities to be given, my body is tired and answering is also tiring (P-

D).” This suggested that the participant stress levels increases because of the higher

workload.

As stated by Benner & Curl (2018), employed students are at a higher risk of

burnout because combining employment with the student role diminishes their capacity

to efficiently manage time and energy to accomplish both employment and academic

tasks. Indeed, a combination of full-time studying and part-time working can cause a

damaging effect on the physical and mental health of students.

According to (Chin et al., 2017) empirical research involving the three components

of burnout (emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and low academic self-efficacy) were

linked to academic anxiety, emotional exhaustion and experience of negative effects

contribute to test anxiety, while the effects of cynicism on test anxiety were not clear; in

contrast, self-efficacy is considered an antecedent of test anxiety.

6. Spending the salary for educational and personal

The researchers come up with the theme as how most of them used their wage for

themselves and for school. And helped them compensate for their school expenses.

These are evident through the following responses.

“Yes, para sa akong pagskwela kay siyempre mohatag akong ginikanan og mga

allowance nako pero kuwang pa so, akong braces makatabang rasad nako para sa

mga kulang sa school. “(Yes. For my schooling. Because sometimes, my parents will
38

give allowances but it's still not enough. So, working as a brace installer will help me

compensate for my school expenses).

-Participant A

“Duha ra, for education and personal “(Only two, for education and personal).

-Participant B

“I usually do ipon or split it into 50-30-20, 50 kay save, 30 kay needs, nya 20 kay

wants”(I usually save up or split it into 50-30-20, 50 for saving, 30 for needs, then 20

for wants).

-Participant D

“To my beloved someone and akong parents sad.” (To my beloved someone and my

parents).

-Participant J

The researchers is that working students work for different reasons, meeting the

financial needs, for their personal use and to pay for school expenses. As commented

by one of the participants, “Yes. For my schooling. Because sometimes, my parents

will give allowances but it's still not enough. So, working as a brace installer will help

me compensate for my school expenses (P-A).” Working students employed

themselves in order to meet demands that they experienced. As a working student, the

39

benefit from the privilege of being one is to earn money and to compensate for

financial dilemmas.

As indicated by Remenick & Bergman (2021), students work for a variety of

reasons, including to meet financial needs like paying tuition and rent, to gain

experience related to career goals, and to earn spending money.

According to Alecia Puyu & Anuar (2017), students currently have to deal with

various challenges and conjectures. Among the most potent challenges they have to

face are financial challenges. Students now need money to cover their rising tuition

and living costs due to inflation in the country. This is due to the increasing cost of

spending, especially for students who have entered the workforce. Among the

expenses incurred by the students are shelter, transportation, n-use, books, notes, and

others. Financial management is of paramount importance for students to monitor their

spending patterns to prevent continued wastage.

Chapter 5

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter contains the summary of findings, conclusions, and recommendations

of the study.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

The findings show that despite the hectic schedules of the working students, they

still managed to juggle work and study. This shows their grit and self-determination to

accomplish tasks that are given to them in showcasing their ability to manage time

effectively and efficiently.

The findings indicates that working students benefitted from studying and working

because they earn money independently and wanted to be independent by not relying

too much from their parents. Being responsible can help them to become self-

sufficient.

The findings also indicates that most of the working students benefitted and find

significance in their respective work. It helps them to gain different experiences on

fieldwork and can expose them them to work culture which can be an advantage for

them, because they are reaping benefits from work while studying which gives them a

head start to other students who aren’t employed.

The findings further show that working students compensate their shortcomings to

their fellow full time students is through effort and achievements they achieved. Being

compared to a normal student is the least of concern to them, because most of them

believed they are still just like any other students.

42

Additionally, the findings also indicates that most of the working students faces

fatigue which can be detrimental to their academic and work performance. It affects

them physically, mentally, which can contribute to stress. They feel exhausted and can

lead them to become unproductive academically and in their work.

Finally, the finding shows that students work for a variety of reasons. Working

students mostly spend their salary in education and for their own personal use. They

employ themselves to compensate for the lack of financial assistance they received

and in order for them to meet the demands especially, towards their school expenses.

CONCLUSION

Based on the findings of this study, it is concluded that the working students

are doing everything they can just to finish their education. Facing adversities is

the nemesis of one working student. But this won’t hinder them into pursuing their

goals and ambitions in life, overcoming challenges is the fruit of their own labors

that can mold them to become a more independent, resilient and responsible

individuals.

RECOMMENDATIONS

In view of the findings of this study, the researchers recommended the

following:

1. Working students must never give up on their goals and ambitions in life.

2. The government must propose a law that students who work have the rights to

receive the basic employee benefits

43

Further study of the juggling between work and studies, the experiences of working

students, the following titles are proposed:

1. Challenges Encountered By Working Students that Affect their Academic

Performance

2. Psychological Effects Of Working While Studying

3. Working Students And Time Management

ABSTRACT

Students have to work and study at the same time to make a living and achieve
their dreams. This research gives a voice to students who, as working students,
struggle a lot with their daily lives. The study used a qualitative approach among
(10) students who working while schooling in Talisay City, Cebu. These working
students were selected on the basis of their experience and served as primary
informants. Using candid interviews and naturalistic observations in local dialects, the
researchers was able to freely list their word for word accounts and was is being used
as main narratives. Participation in the study was voluntary and participants were
interviewed with full confidentially after obtaining their consent. Based on the findings
six themes were identified from the real-life experiences of the working
students. (1) Having good time management despite hectic schedules. (2)
Benefiting from studying while working. (3) Finding relevance to the current job. (4)
Overcome inferiority complex. (5) Fatigue while working. (6)
Spending the salary for educational and personal. It is concluded that working students
are doing whatever it takes to complete their education. Dealing with adversity is a
working student's natural enemy. However, this does not prevent them from pursuing
their life goals and ambitions. Overcoming challenges is the result of their own work,
which can make them more independent, resilient and responsible individuals. For
further research, researchers can conduct further research on the life experiences of
working students not only in Cebu but also in other cities.

A. INTRODUCTION

Students have to work and at the same time study to support themselves in
order to fulfill their dreams (Pregoner et al. 2020). Working while studying is
basically dictated by the budget requirements. They work to cover setbacks in
different kinds of understudies. To increase the salary, improving
the understanding of the studies, in achieving their future goals. Based on the
study of Pregoner et al. (2020) Students working and studying often do poorly
and are unable to complete their studies in record time due to fatigue, stress,
absenteeism, and missed deadlines. Schooling and working has been shown to
reduce the amount of time spent studying and negatively impact
academicperformance (Tetteh 2019). Quality time management is an essential
tool for improving academic performance and reducing depression, anxiety and
stress among working students. However, Pregoner et al. (2020) suggested that
very working students should investigate their time management to improve their
performance both at work and in academics.
The COVID-19 pandemic has devastated employment worldwide, especially,
that of non-regular workers. In the Labor Force Survey (January 2019 to May
2020), Pedroso et al. (2022) investigate the status of employment of working
students. They investigated changes in the employment situation of students.
The number of working students reported in the labour force survey has declined
since March 2020, falling by 780,000(46%) in April. According to a survey of
university students living conditions, 37% were concerned about living expenses
and tuition fees, and a higher percentage of students who were aware of
financial insecurity had poor self-rated health. Almost half of working students
lost their jobs during pandemic in Japan, Ghana, United States of America,
Spain, Germany, Ethiopia.
The Pandemic has brought dramatic changes to various institutions around
the world (Pedroso 2021). It facilitated the implementation of new normal
learning through alternative learning modalities. Working students shown to face
challenges during the pandemic because they perceive their emotional and
physical limitations. A study by Antipolo, J. (2021) found that working students
are more likely than non-working students to experience financial hardship due
to the pandemic, including loss of salary from family members, loss of salary
from on- and off-campus employment, and increased living and technical costs.
There are currently about 216,000 working students on the Philippines juggling
in their schools and work. According to the data Commission on Higher
Education (CHED 2019) about 8% of all university students in the Philippines is
58

a working student. The reason students work is due to family needs and to meet
quick necessities to help them study in need and their future goals (Tetteh et al.
2019) Only half of the employed students can finish college, as many cannot
concentrate on their studies, while others have poor health, and other give up
because of financial problem (CHED).
Working students in the Philippines can also become financially independent
through working despite financial problems. To determine the job options of
working students in the Philippines, I. e , online jobs paid corporate internships,
fast food crews, school jobs (Pedroso et al. 2022) It allows a working student to
share responsibility for paying exam fees, giving them a sense of financial
independence, account monitoring skills. Filipino students are struggling
because they have to meet the standards in their work so that they will not lose
their job and maintain academic performance so that they will not get a failing
grade.
One of the researchers, who also happened to be a working student in
Talisay City. She has been in a predicament in balancing work and study.
According to her, time is her greatest ally and enemy at the same time. As a
working student herself, She knows the importance on how to manage time
properly. Despite knowing the consequences as a working student, she still
pursues education for it is one of the most important things that a human being
can possess. Hence, the researcher would wish to further investigate other
working students experiences.
59

II. Short Literature Review

The phenomenon of being a part-time-worker student is increasing day by day.

Due to financial reasons and experience requirements, universitystudents join part-
time jobs. They are ordinary people who do not have professional or high-paying jobs.
Each of them has their own reasons why they really want to work while studying, and
most of the students' reasons are that they like to help their parents, others want to
experience a job, and others want to work so that they have money to spend and pay
the school fees— working while studying has both positive and negative effects on
Studying, working, and family life
60

without having a negative impact on their studies is extremely difficult.

III. OBJECTIVE OF THIS STUDY

The purpose of this study is to explore and interpret the lived experience of working
students in Talisay City.

IV. METHODOLOGY

The study will make use of phenomenological studies. Data that will be collected

during the interview are relevant only to working students in Talisay City, Cebu. The
participants of this study will be ten (10) working students from all over Talisay City,
Cebu. Implementing with the use of purposive method. The participants of this study
will be working students throughout in Talisay City, Cebu.he researchers will be
utilizing this sampling method to ensure that every member of the participant will have
a chance to be pick out.

61

If I’m a working student,
the schedule differ because it’ll change from face-to-face, online class.

The researchers implied that despite while working and studying they still managed
to juggle between hectic schedules. Having self-determination to accomplish tasked
that are assigned and being efficient and effective to perform as a student can help
them propel in academically manner while working. As commented by one of the
participants, “I think yes, I believe I have a good time management and I can say that
I’m really good at managing my time it’s because even if I’m tired with my work, my
schedule is hectic, but I still maintain my good grades and perform well in my class.
That’s why I can say it’s okay (P E)”. This means that the participant had productively
managed her time while working and studying.

According to (Sayari et al., 2017), the students must schedule their time effectively
to catch up on lessons, assignments, projects, and other school requirements. On the
other hand, they must maintain good work performance to keep their jobs, as losing
them would have a negative impact ontheir studies. Every person's ability to manage
time is essential.
62

Regardless of one's position in life, time management and utilization are equally
important attending classes on time and meeting project and assignment deadlines are
critical responsibilities for students who want to improve their grades. While people in
offices, colleges, and other facilities value time differently, employees and students
should observe and follow standard time (Sayari et al., 2017). As a result, the working-
students’ success in balancing their work-study will make an impact on their
engagement and well-being as a student (Calderwood & Gabriel, 2017).

Juggling work and study
can help them to be self-sufficient and being able to maintain good time management
skills. As one of the participants commented “It is beneficial because I can eat well, I
can help my parents and I can study too (P G).” The experience that can be obtained
can help them to be self-independent and having an overall satisfaction in their way of
life.
Accordingly, Sanchez-Gelabert et al. (2017) mentions that adults who work and
study concurrently gain industry-related skills at their respective workplaces, which
63

cannot be solely obtained at university.

Being a helper, it is
64

already a course itself. So, in the future I can use it to my benefit. Not just being a
helper, but I could use my experiences for the future).

65

But instead, they
persevere and do things casually that help them gain the confidence to have the image
of being a normal student.

As stated by Akdoğan & Çimşir (2019), the method of compensation is to make up

for their shortcomings and inferiority through efforts and achievements in some
aspects, to give full play to the individual subjective initiative.

66

According to Bakshi et, al. (2019), heavy workload combined with long working
hours has already been proven to significantly contribute to a person's fatigue. This
means that increasing the students' workload tends to decrease their motivation to
learn andthus could increase their level of stress and frustration.

Because sometimes, my parents will
give allowances but it's still not enough. So, working as a brace installer will help me
compensate for my school expenses).
-Participant A

“Duha ra, for education and personal “(Only two, for education and personal).
67

As a working student, the
benefit from the privilege of being one is to earn money and to compensate for
financial dilemmas.

VI.

VII. RECOMMENDATION

In view of the findings of this study, the researchers recommended the

following:
68

1. Working students must never give up on their goals and ambitions in life.
2. The government must propose a law that students who work have the rights to
receive the basic employee benefits

time it’s because even if
I’m tired with my work,
my schedule is hectic,
but I still maintain my
goiod grades and
perform well in my class.
That’s why I can say it’s
okay ).
4 Have you ever been so Yes, moabot man dyud The participant came to
tired to the point that you ka sa point na kapoyon a point of giving up but
just want to quit the ka, like labi na kong her tenacity and her
other and fully commit to masakit ka niya ingon strong pursuit to reach
the work/study? (Kapoy ana imong situation her goals is what kept

trabaho/eskwela?) student og trabahante
ka nga kanang kapoy
dyud siya as in kapoy
pero dili man pwede
kapoyon kay naa man
koy pangandoy gud.
(Yes, I’ve come to a
point that it’s very tiring.
Especially when I get
sick, and then your in
that situation, being a
working student at the
same time. You need to
do your job as student
and as a worker. It’s
very tiring as in, tiring
but I don’t give up
because I still have
goals to reach).
5 Do you often feel that No, dili ko maka ingon The participant does not
your inferior to the full ko inferior ko or the feel inferior nor superior
time students? Why? other way around to his/her classmates.
(Kanunay ba nimong superior ko, dili ko maka Instead, her/his

that I'm inferior or the
other way around that
I'm superior, I can't say
that, because it's
because of the
classroom settings that I
have people who
surround me, they don't
feel that way instead
they embrace me and
83

they understand my
situation).

6 Do you think there’s Yes, tungod anang The participant came to

some way of relevance settings sa akong life is a realization that she
in your current job that naka ingon ko na need must need to take a
will lay some dyud diay nako na need rational move because

imong umaabot?) ani para dili sad nako
gusto ba na maagi.an
sad ni sa akong igsuon
mao nang ako mismo
tarongon sad nako
akong kaugalingon.
(Yes, because the
situation in my life.
That’s why I say that I
really needed to find
work. I should do it
properly even if it’s
difficult this could serve
as a lesson that I must
study hard because it’s
not that easy being a
working student. And I
don’t want this to
happen to my siblings
that’s why I must handle
myself properly).

7 Do you think being a Yes, naa siyay perks The participant thinks
working student has its labi na sa financial that working while
own perks? Why? (Sa stability. Maka ingon studying has perks
imong hunahuna ang dyud ta sa financial because she can

income mapalit nimo
ang needs sa school at
the same time sa imong
basic needs sa imong
kaugalingon makapalit
ka sa imong
kaugalingon. (Yes, it has
some perks. Especially
when it comes to
financial stability. I can
say that being financially
stable, there’s a lot of
expenses and
contributions in school.
84

Not everyday our

parents can compromise
that for us. It’ll be best if
I have extra income, I
can buy all the
necessities for myself
and for financing my
school expenses).

8 Where do you often For me, balancing. Dili The participant believes
spend your salary as a tanan sa panahon mo that balancing how she

financing for your personal needs. Dapat things like school

edukasyon o personal ako dyud na siya sick.
nga paggamit? Ngano tunga.on kay kong mo
man?) storya ta sa kaon wala
raman problema kay
naa ramay kaon sa
balay, so akong buhaton
nalang ako e kuan sa
skwelahan og imoha sad
in the future dapat
advance thinker sad ka
ba, bisag unsay
mahitabo nimo diha
bisag naa pakay amo
dapat naa dyud kay
kwarta makuot diha kay
dili raba na sila mo
atiman nimo. (For me,
it’s balancing. Not
everyday I’ll spend for
my own personal use. It
must be balance, I
spend for myself, for my
educational needs and
lastly, for my medical
needs. That’s why every
month, when I receive
my salary I’ll always
divide my salary
because if were talking
about food, it is available
in my home. So, what I
did is I’ll just finance it to
my school and for future
purposes. I must be
think in advance
because what if you’ll
get sick? Even if I have
my employer, I still need
to set aside some
money because my
85

employer will not take

care of me).

9 Have you experienced Wala, wala ko kasuway The participant did not

niy maoy hindrance na
mahimo kang working
student dili na rason na
mo ingon kag working
student man gud ko mao
nang nabagsak ko ana
na subject. Now, it’s a
big no-no kay ngano sa
imong man gud nang
kaugalinon how you
manage. (No, I didn’t
experienced it. I didn’t
reach to the point where
I failed a subject just
because of my situation
being a working student.
Maybe that's why I'm
trying harder to the point
that I'm encouraging
myself, that it's not a
hindrance to be a
working student, it's not
a reason for me to say
that I'm a working
student and that's why I
failed a subject. Now, it's
a big no-no because it's
up to you how you will
manage).
10 What motivates and who First and foremost, The participant find the
influences to work while family matter dyud na motivation to work from
studying? (Unsa ang siya. Makita man dyud the situation that her
nagdani ug kinsa ang nimo sa imong family na family was in and that
nag-impluwensya sa di na kaya sa imong she did not want to be a

kanang dili ka gusto studying.
magpabug.at sa imong
ginikanan mo trabaho
koo kay di na nila kaya
and also ang imong
kaugalingon kay gusto
dyud na nimo siya
mahuman. (First and
foremost, it is a family
matter. I can see in my
family that my parents
are having a hard time
financially supporting
86

and providing us. And

my conscience starts to
kick in that I must not be
a burden to my parents
and I decided to find
