KFKFK

This document contains a science workbook chapter on friction with short answer questions. It discusses topics like why worn out tires are discarded due to reduced friction, why fish can easily swim in water due to streamlined bodies producing minimal friction, the two factors that friction depends on being the nature of surfaces and their roughness, why shoe soles and cricket bat handles are roughened to increase friction and improve grip, and why car wheels may spin on icy roads due to reduced friction. It also justifies how friction is a necessary evil and explains why a pencil can write on paper but not glass due to their different surface frictions.

Chapter 12- Friction

Workbook Work- Short and Long Answers

Do Ques – Ans A to J ( Objective Types ) by yourself.

Question K

1.  Why are worn out tyres discarded?

Solution:

Treaded tyres provide better grip with the ground and in a worn out
tyre, there is reduction in friction between road and tyre, due to which
car may slide during breaking.

2. Why is it easier for fish to swim in water?

Solution:
Fishes can easily swim in water because they have streamlined bodies,
which produces minimum friction in water and energy required to
overcome this friction

3. What are the two factors on which force of friction depend?

Solution:
Friction depends on two factors: (i) Nature of the surfaces in contact
i.e. whether surface is rough or smooth.

4. Why are the soles of shoes grooved?

Solution:

Soles of shoes are grooved because the grooves increase the friction

and gives the good grip to the person while walking with shoes

5. How do brakes stop a moving vehicle?

Solution:

Friction is required to stop a moving car. When the brakes are

applied, it applies a friction force on the wheels to slow it's rotation
which eventually leads to the change in speed of the vehicle
6. People often rub their hands in winters.’ Comment.

Solution:

When we rub our palms, friction is produced and in turn we feel

warmth due to the production of heat.

7. Why is the handle of cricket bat rough?

Solution:

To have better grip on the bat it should be rough because rough

surface increases the friction and allow to have a firm grip on the bat.

8. Why does an eraser lose tiny pieces of rubber each time we

use it?

Solution:

The friction between the eraser and the paper rubs off some rubber
particles from the eraser. Thus, the eraser loses tiny pieces of rubber due
to friction.

9. Why do car wheels often spin on icy roads?

Solution:

A car spins on icy road because the treads of the car can no longer
maintain the proper friction to keep it moving. Or The friction is less/
reduced.

Question L

1. ‘Friction is a necessary evil.’ Justify

Solution:
Friction is said to be a necessary evil because it is useful as well as
harmful. Friction helps us to walk, write, hold things, lift objects. So it is
necessary for our lives. Without friction, many essential processes can not
be done.

2. Explain why a pencil can be used to write on a paper but not

on a glass?
Solution:
A pencil may not write on a glass because glass surface is very
smooth and the friction on the glass is very less which creates
difficulty in writing. whereas paper has more friction it is much
easier to write on paper as compared to glass.

QUESTION M

1. a. Spring balance
b. It is used for measuring the weight of object.
c. When a load is hung on the hook of the spring, it stretches
and the spring’s extension is proportional to the weight of object.
d. Weight of the object.
e. To weigh the loads.

2. a. Grooves
b. To provide better grip
c. Increase friction
d. Helps to walk and helps in writing.
