Coding Decoding

(1) Coding is encrypting a word or number using a set of rules, while decoding is decrypting the encrypted pattern back to its original form. (2) There are various types of coding like letter coding, number coding, symbol coding, substitution coding, and mixed/matrix letter coding. (3) Important points for solving coding problems include knowing the position values of letters, opposite letters, patterns based on sums/differences of digits or numbers, and checking individual codes in random coding problems.

Coding is a process used to encrypt a word, a number in a particular code or pattern based on
some set of rules. Decoding is a process to decrypt the pattern into its original form from the given
codes.

There are various types of coding:

(a) Letter Coding: In this type of question, the alphabets of a word are replaced by some other
alphabets according to a specific rule to form code. To solve this, try to find the difference between
the given letters and their corresponding codes. The difference can be positive or negative.

(b) Number Coding: In this type of question, a word is replaced by certain numbers according to
some specific rule. To solve such code, learn the position values of the English alphabet.
Sometimes, reverse letter coding may be followed, or may be a combination of number and letter
coding.

(c) Symbol Coding: In this type of questions, letters/numbers are replaced by certain symbols.

(d) Substitution Coding: In this type of questions, some particular words are assigned with certain
substituted names.

(e) Mixed letter coding: In this type of question, multiple sentences are given in a coded language
and the code for a particular word is asked. To solve such codes, two sentences bearing a
common word are picked up. The common code will mean that word.

(f) Matrix coding: In this type of question, letters are written down in matrix form and the code of
the letters is denoted by the corresponding row and column of the matrix to which the letter
belongs.

(g) There may also be some random codes deviating from these rules.

Points to remember while solving:

● E-J-O-T-Y is the simplest way of remembering the position values. Positions of E - 5, J – 10,
O – 15, T – 20, Y- 25.
● The letters/numbers can be shifted in both forward and backward directions.
● In matrix coding, first, write all the possible codes of each letter and then compare the given
codes with the options.
● Opposite of each alphabet should be known.
● In number coding, the pattern may be based on the sum of the digits of the
numbers/letters, squares of natural numbers, cubes of natural numbers, the sum of the
digits of letters in reverse alphabetical order, the difference between the place value of the
letters.
● To answer questions based on random coding-decoding, you just must check for the code
of an individual letter/number from the given word and place the corresponding code for
every letter.
