Machine Design Tutorials - Week 6

- The document describes three problems related to machine design and bearings. - For the first problem, a 213 radial ball bearing with a bore of 65mm and load capacity of 16.0 kN is selected to support a shaft carrying a 1000-rpm gear. - For the second problem, if a bearing has a 15,000 hour life for 90% reliability, the corresponding lives for 50% and 99% reliability are 75,000 hours and 3,150 hours respectively. - For the third problem, a No. 207 bearing supporting a shaft rotating at 1800 rpm is estimated to have a B10 life of 6811 hours and a median life of 34,057 hours under varying radial loads.

Problem 1
The figure below shows two bearings supporting a 1000-rpm shaft and gear.
The bearing on the left carries a 5 kN radial load and 1 kN thrust load. The
loading is borderline between light and moderate impact. The required life is
5000 hours with only 2% probability of failure. Select a 200 series radial-
contact ball bearing for the left bearing (only).

Problem 2
A particular bearing application provides a life of 15 000 hours for 90%
reliability. What are the corresponding lives for 50% and 99% reliability?

Problem 3
A No. 207 radial-contact ball bearing supports a shaft that rotates at 1800 rpm.
The radial load varies in such a way that 60, 30 and 10 percent of the time, the
load is 3 kN, 5 kN, and 7 kN, respectively. The loads are uniform, so that 𝐾𝑎 = 1.
Estimate the 𝐿10 (also called 𝐵10 ) life and the median life of the bearing, taken
as 5 times 𝐿10 .

Assumption:

Palmgren-Miner rule (linear

cumulative damage rule) applies

Median life equals approximately 5 times the B10 life…

median life = 34,057 hours 𝐴𝑁𝑆.

**The general relationship that average life is equal to approx. 5 times the B10 life was established
from experimental data obtained from endurance testing of numerous bearings
