Phy122 Em1 2023

1. This document contains instructions for an assignment on electricity, magnetism, and elements of modern physics. It includes 5 problems involving calculations of electrostatic forces between point charges. 2. The first problem involves calculating the forces between three point charges on the x-axis. The second calculates forces between two charges separated by 50 cm. 3. The third determines the angle a small charged sphere makes when a negative charge 15 cm away balances the electrostatic force. 4. The fourth calculates the total force on a charge at the center of an equilateral triangle with other charges at the corners. 5. The final problem involves placing four charges of 2 μC each (two positive, two negative

UNIVERSITY OF BOTSWANA

Department of Physics
PHY 122 – Electricity, Magnetism, & Elements of Modern Physics 2020/2021
ASSIGNMENT – EM1 Tutorial Dates 1-6 February, 2023

1. Three point charges are lined along the x-axis as shown in the diagram
-4 µC 20 cm 3 µC 15 cm -7 µC

a) Indicate the direction of the forces acting on 3µ charge.

b) Calculate the magnitudes of forces acting on 3µC charge.
c) Find the magnitude and direction of the resultant electrostatic force on −4 µ𝐶 charge.

2. Two point charges 𝑞1 = −1𝜇C and 𝑞2 = +9𝜇C are separated by a distance of 50 cm.
a) Find the magnitude and the direction of the Coulomb force on each of the charges due to the
other.
b) At what point on the line joining the two charges should a charge 𝑞 = −1𝜇C be placed so that
the net force on q due to 𝑞1 and 𝑞2 is zero?

3. A small spherical metal ball of mass 8.0 × 10−2 𝑘𝑔 and charge +0.6 𝜇C
is hung by a thin non-conducting string of negligible mass. A charge of
−0.90 𝜇C is held 15 𝑐𝑚 away from the sphere and directly to the right
of it so that the wire is held in position and makes an angle θ with the
vertical as shown. Find the angle θ.

4. ABC is an equilateral triangle of side 2 m, P is the centre of the triangle.

A charge of +0.2 𝑚C is placed at P, and two charges equal to +0.3 𝑚C
are placed at corners B and C, respectively.
a) Calculate the total Coulomb force on the charge at P.
b) Calculate the magnitude and sign of a point charge that should be
placed at A, so that the charge at P is in equilibrium.

5. There are four charges, each with a magnitude of 2 µC. two are positive
and two are negative. The charges are fixed to the corners of a square of side 0.3 m, one to a corner,
in such a way that the net force on any charge is directed toward the centre of the square.
a) Show on a diagram how the charges should be placed to satisfy the above condition.
b) Indicate on the diagram the directions of the Coulomb forces acting on a single charge and label
them
c) Calculate the magnitude of each of the forces, labelled in part (b), and acting on a single charge.
d) Find the magnitude of the net electrostatic force experienced by any single charge
