Applications of EM Waves

Here are the answers to the questions in the blanks: 1. Radio waves have the longest wavelengths among electromagnetic waves. 2. Gamma rays have the shortest wavelengths and highest energy among electromagnetic waves. 3. X-rays are used in diagnosing bone fractures because their short wavelengths allow them to pass through flesh but not bones.

t
Look at the name of the devices hidden in the puzzle. The words may be
placed vertically, horizontally, diagonally o even backward. You have 3
mins to find the hidden words.
ANSWER:
1. Radio
2. Television
3. Radar
4. Microwave

PRACTICAL
APPLICATIONS OF
DIFFERENT
REGIONS OF EM
WAVES
At the end of the lesson, the students
OBJECTIVE: would be able to:

1.Describe the seven electromagnetic

waves
2.Cite examples of the practical
application of electromagnetic waves
3.E Xplain how electromagnetic waves
are applied or used in everyday life.
RADIO WAVE

Radio waves are a kind of electromagnetic wave whose wavelength falls

in the electromagnetic spectrum. The radio waves have the longest
wavelengths among electromagnetic waves .
RADIO WAVE

•Information can be sent via radio

waves using a transmitter and a
receiver
Practical Applications
Radio/Television signals

Radio and television signals are

radio waves that are produced by
making electrons vibrate. It has a
long wavelength capable of
transmitting sound and picture
information over long distances
•We have two types of radio we have AM radio
and we have FM radio
•AM radio stands for amplitude modulation
while
FM radio stands for frequency modulation
AM RADIO
Fm RADIO
When the radio wave is received by an antenna of a
radio or television, the pattern is converted back to its
original form.
Not line of sight
Characteristic Can pass through
of a radio wave walls
Longer range
Not light sensitive
Practical
Application
Global Positioning System (GPS)

is a space-based navigation system

that provides geographical position
and time information anywhere on or
near the earth. It communicates with
stations on the ground using radio
waves.
Practical Application
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

It is a medical imaging technique that uses powerful magnets,

computers, and radio waves to make detailed pictures inside
your body.
MICROWAVE
microwaves have smaller wavelengths
than radio waves and can penetrate
the atmosphere of the earth this wave
is commonly used in satellite
communications.

t
Practical
Application of
Microwave this wave is commonly
used in satellite
communications, radar,
television, transmission,
and cooking
t
Infrared

Infrared waves, or infrared light, are part of the electromagnetic

spectrum. People encounter Infrared waves every day; the human
eye cannot see them, but humans can detect them as heat.
Practical Application
Remote control (IR remote)

uses LED lights to transmit signals to

control devices. It emits pulses of
invisible infrared light

t
Practical Application
Thermal imaging through infrared scanners

Infrared scanners such as thermal

imaging and thermal scanner are
used to show the temperature
variation of the body

t
Practical Application t

Night vision goggles

use thermal imaging technology to

capture the infrared light being
emitted as heat by objects in the
field of view.
t

Visible Light

The visible spectrum is the portion

of the electromagnetic spectrum
that is visible to the human eye.
Artificial Lights

like flashlights, lamps, etc –

are any light source that produces
light instead of natural light
produced by the sun.
Optical Fibers
One use of optical fibers in
medicine is an endoscope, a
l A

flexible tube with tiny camera

that is used to observe the
internal parts of the body

Ultraviolet
Ultraviolet (UV) light has
shorter wavelengths than
visible light. Although UV
waves are invisible to the
human eye, some insects, such
as bumblebees,
t
Practical Applications
Security markings
•Sensitive documents such
as credit cards, banknotes,
and passports include a UV
watermark that is only seen
under UV-emitting light.
Practical Applications
•Sterilization of water in
drinking fountains

Ultraviolet light disinfection is

one water treatment system that
can be used to remove most
forms of microbiological
contamination from water.
Xray
are a form of electromagnetic
radiation, similar to visible
light. Unlike light, however, x-
rays have higher energy and
can pass through most objects,
including the body.

t
Practical Applications
Diagnosing bone fractures

X-rays are produced using an X-ray

tube. They are emitted when fast-
moving electrons hit a metal target.
Long-wavelength X-rays can penetrate
the flesh but not the bones that’s why
it is used in diagnosing bone fractures
Practical Applications

Airport security scanner

The short wavelength X-rays can

penetrate through metals which
can be used in airport security
scanners.
GAMMA RAY
Gamma ray is electromagnetic
radiation of the shortest wavelength and
highest energy. Gamma rays are
produced in the disintegration of
radioactive atomic nuclei and in the
decay of certain subatomic particles.

t
Practical Application of Gamma
Ray
Treat tumors and cancer through
the process called radiotherapy
