CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Human civilization has evolved, and part of that evolution has been the advent of

technology, which refers to methods, systems, and gadgets that are the result of

scientific knowledge being put to practical use. The gadget is a type of technology that

makes life easier for humans, and it can include a variety of items such as cooking

tools, cleaning tools, and other entertainment devices. Most students overuse gadgets

such as television, smartphone, tablet, laptop, computers, and so on, which has an

impact on their academic performance. Gadgets affect students' academic performance

in both positive and negative ways. It has a beneficial impact since devices help

students develop their learning skills faster because they are more interested in gadgets

than books. Students can also learn more about a subject by visiting instructional

websites. Gadgets harm students' education since they can divert the attention away

from their studies. Moreover, instead of looking for educational websites, students utilize

the internet to watch prohibited adult videos. Students who use their devices

excessively become depressed, which is one of the reasons to limit their use.

This research is all about the effects of overusing gadgets on students' academic

performance. This research also provides the answers to the questions about the effects

of overusing gadgets. It is stated here in the research about the possible effects of their

academic performances because of overusing gadgets. The significance of this study is to

identify the effects of overusing gadgets on students’ academic performance. According

to research conducted by Jamaluddin, (2020), both the aspect of academic achievement

1vi

and health status are being affected as they are too dependent on electronic gadgets.

Screen time for Junior High School students should be a minimum of 2 hours and

a maximum of 4 hours a day, according to the Department of Education, and exceeding

the recommended screen time is deemed overusing. Murai (2015) claims that 23,139

students from fifth grade through third year of high school took part in the survey, which

was conducted in 771 public schools across the country. It was shown that 53.5 percent

of junior high students who claimed to talk, send email, or surf the Internet for more than

four hours every day do not go to bed until after midnight.

The research survey will be conducted using a descriptive survey as the research

method at Holy Trinity College Junior Highschool Department since the school has

embraced online learning, which means the students are encouraged to use gadgets for

their learning activities. The major source of data will be the survey questionnaire, which

the researchers have developed and statistically treated using descriptive statistics such

as frequency, percentage, averages, and graphical analysis. The researchers used a

pre- made questionnaire to analyze the total amount of time spent on electronic devices

as well as the academic performance of the students. Because going outdoors is still

restricted, the study was done inside our separate homes, and the researchers will

distribute surveys via online communication. The researchers will encourage 40

students from Holy Trinity College, 10 students from grade levels 7, 8, 9, and 10, to

answer the survey given.

2vi

Through this study, the researchers will assess how students react to the effects

of excessive gadget use to gather more data and change their attitude toward excessive

gadget use over time. The researchers are conducting this study and propose possible

solutions to help students who overuse their gadgets. The study of the researcher will

assist students to understand the impact of excessive use of gadgets on their academic

performance, and will also help them avoid the negative effects of excessive use of

gadgets.

CHAPTER II

METHODOLOGY

This chapter contains the methodology selected for the proposed study of the

researchers. The researchers used a survey as their research instrument. The planned

research survey contains the different perspectives of the students on the effects of

overusing gadgets on their academic performance. It is composed of 16 questions in

total and is divided into 3 parts. The first part of the survey contains the gathered profile

of the students such as name, age, and grade level. The second part contains the

estimated time spent on gadgets and what type of gadgets students use. And for the

last and third part, it contains 12 questions for the effects of overusing gadgets towards

the students’ academic performance. The students answered from a scale ranging from

Strongly agree to Strongly disagree. The researchers aimed to address a practical and

hypothetical problem. They have acquired answers and results from their made survey

and identified if it was helpful or not. It was a suitable choice for the researchers to stick

with the survey research for them to acquire accurate results, and identify them

conveniently and for the students as well.

From the collected data that would be given, the distribution of questionnaires

from the survey is intended to be recorded and analyzed. The researchers proposed to

use mean values for the results of the questionnaire that will be answered by the Junior

High Students in Holy Trinity College. Based on the data, 10 students from each grade

level are planned to be asked by the researchers, namely grades 7, 8, 9 and 10.

This research aids students in gaining a better understanding of the negative

effects that excessive use of technology can have on their academic performance.

Because it can make students aware that overusing gadgets can have a significant

impact on their grades, this study is crucial. For the students to have a better

understanding of this type of study, the researchers have included a lot of material.

The main objective of this study is the desire to associate beneficial or non-

beneficial effects of overusing to students' academic performances. Another goal that

the researchers want to achieve is to examine how gadgets may be used as effective

learning material in innovation education to improve student learning results.

To begin, the researchers had created and prepared a set of questions for the

questionnaire, which was then used to collect data from the respondents. The study is

based on a survey that requires students to respond to 16 questions. The researchers

then conducted a virtual survey and distributed surveys to 40 students at Holy Trinity

College of General Santos City Junior High School Department via internet

communication. There will be 10 students from each grade level among the 40 students

who were meant to be surveyed and utilized as a reference in this study. Finally, the

researchers will analyze the responses of the survey questionnaire that is set for

distribution to the students, will determine common issues, and will propose potential

solutions.

CHAPTER IV

ABSTRACT, SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter concluded with the subsequent chapters, which presents the

research abstract, summary, conclusions, and recommendations for the overall

research. In the abstract, a brief outline of the completed research is offered, followed

by the summary of the study.  The conclusion will include generalizations and other

interfering factors, as well as the researchers' recommendations to the study's

beneficiaries. In general, the purpose of this chapter is to conceal the study's final

findings.

Abstract

Technology has played a vital role in educational innovations, accommodating

both teachers’ and learners’ choices and flexibility in their teaching and learning

practice. This expressive research was made to find out the effects of overusing

gadgets on students’ academic performances of Holy Trinity College, Junior High

school Department. This research was conducted within the residence of the

researchers in General Santos City. A total of forty (40) students from Holy Trinity

college of General Santos City responded on the survey that was given to them by the

researchers. The researchers asked five (5) students per level in the junior high school

department. Google form was the instrument used for this survey and for the analysis of

this data. Results of the study showed that majority of the students use smart phones as

their “mostly used gadget”. It also resulted that most of the students use their gadgets in

between the timeframe of 6-10 hours, and 4 students resulted as overusing towards

19vi
HIGH SCHOO L DEPARTMENT
HOLYTRINITYCOLEGE
GENERAL SANTOS CITY

gadgets. The researchers concluded that the effects of overusing gadgets on students’

academic performances can differ depending on how the students use their gadgets.

Summary

The researchers were able to collect data from 40 students at Holy Trinity College. The

researchers found out that the majority of the students use smart phones, and there are

10 students who use their gadgets for 4 to 5 hours a day, 17 students use their time for

6 to 10 hours, 9 students use their gadgets for 11 to 15 hours, and the remaining 4

respondents use their gadgets for more than 16 hours a day. According to DepEd’s

recommended time frame, the respondents are considered to be overusing their

gadgets. The survey questions are divided into two categories, which are negative and

positive questions. In table one, which is composed of negative questions, the visual

interpretation of questions 1, 2, and 3 is agreed, while the visual interpretation of

questions 4 and 6 is neutral. Question 5 is the only one in Table 1 that has a visual

interpretation of "disagree." Table 2, which is composed of positive questions, has 1

visual interpretation, which is "agree".

Conclusion

The survey questionnaire used to investigate the possible effects of the factor on the

target audience was carefully prepared by the researchers. As a consequence of their

thorough analysis, the researchers concluded that the effects of over using gadgets on

students' academic performances are favorable rather than the contrary. However, the

data analysis shows that the impacts are not entirely favorable, since the respondents

20vi
HIGH SCHOO L DEPARTMENT
HOLYTRINITYCOLEGE
GENERAL SANTOS CITY

also experience negative effects. In line with the above remark, the researchers have

concluded that the effects of over using gadgets on students' academic performances

can also differ depending on the student's sense of responsibility.

Recommendation

Overuse of technology has a significant impact on students' academic performance,

whether in a favorable or negative way. The survey's results are believed to be more on

the positive side than the negative side. Based on these findings, the researchers

advise students to use their devices if they need something for their education that is

difficult to locate in a book. Because searching takes time, students may overuse their

gadgets until they achieve what they're looking for. The researchers strongly advise

students to take a break after using their gadgets for an extended period of time since

the radiation from the devices is so high that it could harm the students' health and

cause them to struggle academically.
