2. Hazard Identification

Odorless film, Unlikely to cause harmful effects under normal conditions of handling and use.
High temperature operations using can produce fumes or vapors of decomposition products of
polyethylene terphthalate, isophthalate polymer. The type and quantity of the fumes or vapors will vary
based on temperature, time and other variables.
Decomposition products caused by overheating polyethylene Terephthalate may cause skin, eye, nose,
throt, or respiratory irritation or other effects such as headache. Molten polymer can cause thermal burns.
All ingredients are fully incorporated into the product. Exposure to fillers encapsulated in the film polymer
is not likely during normal use.

3. Composition/Information on Ingredients
Sarafil® Polyester film is made from: Polyethylene Terephthalate (CAS# 25038-59-9) may contain co
extrusion layers.
The following fillers and/or additives/coatings used to modify the physical appearance and/or surface
properties may be present in one or more film types. Concentrations of the following may range

Substance CAS No. EC No. Approx. % Remark

Polyethylene 25038-59-9 not available 99.565 PET (Main
terephthalate (PET) Polymer)

Silicon Dioxide 7631-86-9 231-545-4 0.4 Additive

Antimony trioxide 1309-64-4 215-175-0 0.035 Catalyst Residue

This product does not contain deliberated additions of Heavy metals including Hg & Cd.
The information presented in the subsequent sections of this information sheet is representative of all
"Sarafil®” polyester film products, including those with/without fillers and those with/without co extrusion
layers.

4. First Aid Measures
Inhalation: No specific information is indicated as the compound is not likely to be hazardous by inhalation.
However if exposed to fumes from overheating or combustion, remove patient from exposure, seek fresh air
and if necessary, see a physician.
Skin contact: If molten product contact with skin, cool rapidly with cool water. Do not attempt to remove the
material from skin. Obtain medical attention if ill effects occur.
Eye contact: Use of safety glasses is recommended. In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with
plenty of water and seek medical advice.
Notes to physicians: Prolonged eye irritation may occur from the pieces to debris sticking to the eyeball or
eyelids.
Ingestion: It is unlikely to occur. If necessary treat symptomatically.
5. Fire fighting measures
Burning behavior:
Films can be combusted only by remaining in contact with flame. If flame source is stationary, films will shrink
away and self-extinguish.
Burning is accompanied by melting and dropping which may cause the fire to spread. Combustion will evolve
toxic and irritant vapors. At complete combustion the major products formed will include oxides of carbon and
water. During incomplete combustions a complex range of volatile organic compounds including trans
esterification, combustion, reaction products and lower levels of hydrocyanic acid will be formed in addition to
carbon dioxide, water and carbon monoxide.
During processing, films may pick up a strong static charge. Avoid discharge onto dust or solvent laden air as
a flash fire or explosion may result.
Decomposition temperature: > 300 °C
Extinguishing Media: Foam, Dry powder, CO2, Water
Use media appropriate for surrounding material.
Fire Fighting Instructions:
Keep personnel removed and upwind of fire. Wear self-contained breathing apparatus. Wear full protective
equipment.
6. Accidental release measures
Films and film scraps can create a slipping hazard. Collect product for recovery or disposal. Use proper
personal protection.
Scrap film generated through processing, eg slitting/shredding, should be swept up and disposed of on drums
or plastic bags according to local regulations, don’t allow entering drains and waterways.

7. Handling and Storage

Handling:
Adequate ventilation and cleanliness must be employed in the processing area. Area should be controlled
using good occupational hygiene practices.
Thicker films have very sharp edges and may cause cuts and needs to be handled carefully, wear
suitable protective equipment.
Processing/use of the film through and over rollers will tend to generate strong electrostatic charge on the
web. Static elimination/discharge devices should be properly positioned at such points to eliminate the
charge and to prevent uncontrolled discharge from the web. This is particularly required in potentially
explosive atmospheres and to protect personnel from the effect of a static discharge.
Conditions for safe storage:
Store in cool, dry place at an ambient temperature (preferably 25°C with Relative Humidity of
50%) in a closed storage area
Do not store near flame, ignition sources, direct sunlight or incompatible materials.
Maintain good housekeeping to control dust/contaminations, preferably materials to be stored with
original packing condition.
Use both the films by FIFO system & it is advised to rotate the film stock.

Shelf life:
• 12 months for Sarafil plain and corona treated film and

Issued on: 4th January 2023

• 6 months for coated film from the date of manufacturing

8. Exposure controls/Personal protection

Polyethylene Terephthalate: No OSHA exposure limits are set up.
Exposure control:
General exhaust is acceptable except where overheating can occur during processing. High temperature
operations may require use of local exhaust ventilation to keep employee exposure below recommended limits.
Personal Protective Equipment:
Eye/face Protection
It is recommended to use safety goggles as good industrial practices
Respiratory protection:
Respirators are not needed for normal use.
Where airborne concentrations are expected to exceed exposure limits, a NIOSH approved respirator should
be selected based on the form and concentration of the contaminant in air.
Protective clothing:
If there is potential for contact with hot/molten material, wear heat resistant impervious clothing and footwear.
Special protective clothing is not needed for normal use. The cotton gloves are appropriate to handle the
Polyethylene terephthalate film. Gloves must be changed every month.
9. Physical and chemical properties
The film is odorless, chemically stable and resistant to attack by oils, solvents, weak acids and weak alkalis.
The film appearance (transparency, color) varies according to film type. Melting range is 240°-265°C and it
decomposes above 300°C. In the melt and upon decomposition, acetaldehyde (CAS# 75-07-0) may form. The
density is in the range of 1.35 – 1.6 g/cm3, depending on type of the product.
10. Stability and reactivity
Stable at normal temperatures and storage conditions.
Thermal decomposition : >>250 deg centigrade
Strong acids and bases may hydrolyze the film
Hazardous Decomposition Products :
Above the decomposition temperature, the major volatiles will be terephthalic acid, oligomers of PET, carbon
dioxide, carbon monoxide, acetaldehyde, and low molecular weight alcohols/ aldehydes
11. Toxicological Information
Polyethylene Terephthalate film is not a skin irritant, but is a mild eye irritant. Toxic effects from short
exposures by inhalation resulted in no adverse effects.
Toxic effects from short exposures by ingestion resulted in no adverse effects.

12. Ecological Information’s

Low toxic to aquatic organisms. The product is insoluble in water. Due to their negligible solubility in water and
high molecular weight, it is expected to have a low BOD and will not cause oxygen depletion in aquatic
systems.
The product is non-biodegradable in soil. Unlikely to affect biological treatment processes.
13. Disposal Considerations
Disposal of Polyester films does not pose any specific danger.
Preferred options for disposal are (1) recycling, (2) incineration with energy recovery, and (3) landfill. The high

fuel value of this product makes option 2 very desirable for material that cannot be recycled. Treatment,
storage, transportation and disposal must be in accordance with applicable federal, State/provincial, and local
regulations.
14. Transport Information
This product is not classified by the Department of Transportation as a hazardous material. Dispatch by mail
permitted.
15. Disposal Consideration
Clean Air Act Status: This product does not contain and is not produced with ozone depleting chemicals as
defined in 58 FR 8136, February 11,1993
