LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 8
(Using Problem Based Learning)
I. Objective:
At the end of this problem-based learning, the students would be able to;
a. Graphs a linear equation given any two points, the x and y intercepts, and the slope
and a point on the line.
II. Subject Matter: LINEAR EQUATION
Reference: M8-AL-lf-2
Materials to be used by the students: pen, notebook, calculator, ruler and graphing paper.
III. Development of the Lesson
A. Introduction
B. Presentation of the Problem
PROBLEM:
A group of students suspect that farm animals eat less when the weather is warm. They
asked the farm staff to record how much food an adult goat ate on days with different
average temperatures.
Average 30 40 45 55 60 75 85 90
daily
temperature
(F)
Food eaten 3.9 3.6 3.4 3.0 2.7 2.5 2.2 1.9
(kg)
After analyzing the data, create a model to predict how much a goat would eat based on
a given average temperature. Be sure to communicate and defend your model using
scatter plots, equations, complete sentences, and proper mathematical notation.
SCAFFOLDS or HINT CARDS:
1. Make a graph of the data.
2. Draw a line that fits the data
3. Find a linear equation in the form of y=mx + b.
4. What do the values of m and b in your equation tell you about the relationship
between daily average temperature and the goat’s food consumption?
5. How much could we expect a goat to eat on a 50-degree day?
C. Performing the Problem Based Learning
D. Presentation of Outputs
E. Generalization of the lesson
IV. Evaluation
Direction: Graph the following linear equation given
1. ( 4, -2)
2. x-intercept is 3, y-intercept is 1
3. slope is 6 and a point 9
4. (0, 8)
5. x-intercept is -1, y-intercept is 7
6. slope is -4 and a point 2
V. Assignment:
Direction: List as many as you can any school related problems and create possible
solutions.
