Brief chosen:

Film magazine

How do you intend to use the four areas of the media theoretical framework to communicate meaning
and meet the requirements of your chosen brief? (approx. 400 words)

Product 1
My magazine covers will both represent two different social groups by one featuring a male model
and then a female model on the other. To target my audience, I have decided to focus on a
matriarchal representation with men having a lower social status than the women. On the second
magazine the story focuses on a self confident young female director. The women will be represented
as rich and powerful compared to the man on the first magazine who will be working, which then
challenges Van Zoonen’s theory on media industries and stereotypes but will represent well with the
intended target audience. To establish each mise en scene i will use typical props to portray the
representation of men having a lower status. The typeface will be sans serif to give the product a
modern feel, as well the colour pallet (pink, blue and black) will be suited towards the models to

create certain meanings. This then ties in with Barthes theory on signs creating meanings for
audiences. To portray that the magazine is industry compliant and understands regulation, to support
Livingstone and Lunt, the magazine will carry the IPSO logo. Finally on the cover there will be a call
to action towards the website to show convergence of the magazine.

Product 2

To show convergence my website will be optimised for mobile phone viewing as this is most likely
what the target audience will be using to view the site. For each story a hashtag will be created so that
readers can share them to social media, which is attractive for the target audience, this uses henry
Jenkins ideas as the audience are involved. Lots of images along with a simple lexis will be used
throughout the website to make it easy to understand and be targeted towards the younger target
audience. The text will be in sans serif as well as using the same font from the magazine too
incorporate the magazine and the website together. Similarly, to merge the two components the
navigation bar will mimic the same subheadings from those of the magazine, and will feature the same
colour pallet of pink, blue and black. This is the chosen colour pallet as pink and blue both come with
gender stereotypes attached which are being challenged by the magazine. Finally, the audio clip will
be that of a short podcast clip which are very popular within the target audience as they are very
engaging for the audience.
How do you intend to link your media products to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of
the digitally convergent nature of your media production? (approx. 100 words)

To link the media products, I will use a call to action on the magazine front cover to promote the
website to the readers and will highlight additional content that is only available online such as the
podcast clip and new photo’s from the stories featured. The website is also going to optimised for
mobile phone usage which I will test before the final launch of the website. The website and the
magazine will also feature the same hashtags for each story, these hashtags will feature on the big
social media platforms as this will suit the younger target audience.
