Preparation

1. Prepared equipment, materials and instruments for newborn care.

2. Washed and scrubbed hands aseptically.

3. Waited for the delivery of the newborn and takes note of the sex of the
baby and time of delivery.

First 30 seconds

1. Placed the baby on a clean, dry cloth/towel on the mother’s abdomen.

2. Thoroughly dried baby for at least 30 seconds, starting from the face
and head, going down to the trunk and extremities.

1-3 minutes

1. Removed wet cloth.

2. Placed baby on skin-to-skin contact on the mother’s abdomen.

3. Covered the baby with a clean, dry cloth/towel.

4. Covered baby’s head with a bonnet.

5. Checked APGAR score during the first minute of life.

6. Advised mother to maintain skin-to-skin contact.


7. Maintained the baby in prone position on mother’s chest/in

8. between the breasts with head turned to one side.

15-90 minutes

9. Checked APGAR score during the fifth minute of life.

10. Advised mother to observe for feeding cues (cited examples)

11. Supported mother, instructed her on positioning and attachment.

12. Waited for FULL BREASTFEED to be completed.

13. Administered eye ointment (first)

14. Did thorough physical examination
