PROSODIC FEATURES OF SPEECH
10:50 A.M. - 11:00 P.M.
March 15, 2023

I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standard The learner demonstrates communicative competence through his/her
understanding of yhe literature and other texts types for a deeper
appreciation of Philippine Culture and those of other countries.
B. Performance Standard The learner skillfully performs in one-act play through utilizing effective
verbal and non-verbal strategies and ICT resources based on the following
criteria: Focus, Voice, Delivery, and Dramatic Conventions.
C. Learning a. Describe the prosodic features of speech,
Competency/Objectives Value the importance of prosodic features in speaking and writing,
Perform a one-play act using the correct pause, stress, and etc.

 MOTIVATION As an energizer for today, you read these lines using different

B. ANALYSIS What did you observe in the video?

If you are the audience, how would you feel about hearing this
monotonous speech?

Our topic has something to do to avoid this monotonous tone of


speaking.

What comes into your mind when you heard the word stress?
Pitch? Pause? Volume?
C. ABSTRACTION Prosodic Features of speech suprasegmental, also called prosodic
feature, in phonetics, a speech feature such as stress, tone, or
word juncture that accompanies or is added over consonants and
vowels; these features are not limited to single sounds but often
extend over syllables, words, or phrases.
It has five features:
1. Pause - brief silences in speeches. It builds excitement or
drama, hesitation, between ideas or statement, searching
for the right word, don’t know what to say next.
Example:
1. I often like to read a book / before I go to bed. / I tend to
like historical dramas, / but / I especially love / a good mystery
book.
2. wait! / I’m running / as fast as I can. / please/ wait for me.
3. And the winner is / anna

2. Pitch - degree of highness or lowness in a person’s voice


Example:
1. My desk is behind anna’s. (In this speech the voice
generally falls).
2. My desk is behind anna’s. (Our pitch rises at the end of a
yes or no question)

3. Stress - force or emphasis used on a sound, syllable, or


words when we speak.
Example: Project (noun) – project (verb)
An ambitious project to develop the city’s waterfront.
We need an actor who projects a positive image to young people.
Record (noun) – record (verb)

4. Volume - The amount of loudness of your voice.


Whispering – requires little volume.
Shouting- requires considerably more volume.

5. Tempo/Pace - How fast or slow we speak, speed.


Fast speech: busy or in a hurry, stressed, upset or
emotional, very smart.
Slow speech: laid back or relaxed, tired, elderly, confident
or powerful.
What is the importance of these prosodic features of speech?
D. APPLICATION Let’s have a group activity. The teacher will post a one-act play to
read aloud applying the correct pause, stress, volume, and pitch

ONE-ACT PLAY READING. Students will be divided into 4 and they


will read the script using the correct usage of the prosodic features
of speech that was discussed.

Stress 10 points (2 points for each word) A deduction of 1 point


for each word uttered incorrectly.
Delivery of Speech Refers to the clarity of speech, volume,
phrasing, and stage projection. 10 points

IV. EVALUATION Directions.


A. Identification. Read each sentence carefully and identify
what is being described in the sentence.

1. It is the rhythm or intonation of a language.


2. The sudden stop that we make when we are speaking is
called _____.
3. It is the degree of highness of the tone.
4. It is the force or emphasis used on a sound, syllable, or
words when we speak.
5. The amount of loudness of your voice is called _____.

B. Essay. In 2-3 sentences, explain the importance of prosodic


features of speech.
V. ASSIGNMENT I. Read an excerpt from the speech of State Secretary Marianne
Hagen. Identify the stressed syllable in the underlined words.
II. Define descriptive and narrative essay. Look for a short
descriptive and narrative text about Africa or Africans.
