Uses

Second Conditional is used to talk about:

➢ Hypothetical or unreal situations in the present or future.

➢ Things that are unlikely to happen.

➢ To give advice.
Structures

If + Past Simple, Modal verbs:


Unless + Past Simple, would, could, might.

Unless I were an English teacher, I would like to be a flight


attendant to be traveling all the time.

Modal verbs: if + Past Simple.


would, could, might unless + Past Simple.

I would like to be a flight attendant to be traveling all


the time unless I were an English teacher,
Note:
For the Second Conditional, all the
personal pronouns take the “were” form
for verb “to be” (conditional clause).
Examples

1. If I had a daughter, her name would be Alondra.

2. I could start my own business if I didn’t gradute.

3. I wouldn’t have to work if I were rich.

4. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where


would you like to go?

5. Would you get married at this time of your life if


your girlfriend or boyfriend proposed?
I.- Read the text and put the missing headings (A-C) in the correct spaces (1-3).

If I won the lottery, ...


1- ___ I’ve always wanted to be a singer, so if I won the lottery, I’d become a
famous pop star. I’d pay someone to write really good songs for me. I would
record a CD and then a fantastic video. I’d love to have a Number One single and
be on lots of tv programmes! Then, I think I’d start a record company and help
other people to record their music.

2- ___ I wouldn’t spend all my money. I would give some money to my parents. My
mom works really hard and she hates her job. So she could be my manager! I’d
also give some money to a charity -perhaps Greenpeace or Amnesty International.

3- ___ I hope the money wouldn’t change me. My friends are great, so I wouldn’t
want to lose them. I’m sure they would still like me if I were very rich and famous.
