Title: A study of the impact of social media on English language learning.

Introduction:

English is the official language for most of the Countries.Though it is an

international language which is spoken by many Countries as native or 2nd language, the teaching
techniques of English is based on reading writing no impact on communication. The methods
that use in classroom are monotonous with same activities and materials and create distress in
learners or students. By using authentic, interesting and available teaching materials an English
classroom can make interesting, enthusiastic and learners friendly.

In past few decades, with the development of technology, information and communication the
world has changed tremendously. As the effect of that the living, learning, working even sharing
information of people has changed a lot. Now everyone carry a smart phone with them that is as
qualify as a computer, with the connection of internet that small screen of phone become world
to the new generation. They can tour the world, buy glossary or connect, communicate with the
world through social media on their smart phone. The introduction of various social media tools-
Facebook, WhatsApp and You Yube, twitter instagram etc. significantly evolves people’s way of
communication. Regardless of geographical boundaries and time zone, people can share,
comment and acquire information anywhere and anytime.” Social media has been persistently
changing the individuals' method for living in different angles, for example, communication,
knowledge exchange, commerce, and education” (Bhatti, 2018; Bhatti, Bano, & Rehman, 2019).
As all platform of social media is international and based on English, It is not only growing the
interest of learning English but also helping the student learning English using this platform.
Like Facebook page, blog, group, you tube channel are giving free classes and information to
learn English anytime anywhere as the learning becomes this accessible and flexible even rural
students are now getting the advance materials (texts, audio-visual, video, pictures, etc.) to learn
English language swhich in the past they are deprived of.

Again Social Media has also created words of their own. Words like Blog, Hashtag, Selfie, and
Tweet. These words have never existed before the invention of social media, but now with the
introduction of social media they have become more prominent than ever. Even some acronyms,
OMG, TBT, DM, and LOL have trickled from social media platforms to ordinary verbal and
written English, which changes the way the written language a lot.

Literature review:

The influence of social media of current generation cannot be denied, for them
it is more than just a communication tools. Kietzmann quoted “Social media employs mobile and
web-based technologies to create highly interactive platforms via which individuals and
communities share, co-create, discuss, and modify user-generated content”. With the emphasis
on “interaction”, “creation “and “technology”, social media evolves the traditional way of
people's communication. Everyone is more willing to share and interact in virtual communities
with meaningful and interest all types of people which blur geographical boundaries and time
zone. Such interactions and collaborations are highly valued in learning and teaching. In 2007,
the British Council conducted market research into how the Internet especially social media has
affected the preferred learning styles of young people wanting to learn English around the world.

So the purposes of this research to investigate how social media can help better English literacy
form a traditional classroom. The study goal is to explore social media use in English language
learning in rural students in Bangladesh, does social media blur the big gap between rural and
urban students in learning English. Another particular aims to investigate how these students’
current English literacy practices can be enhanced by using the social media and how the social
media may further assist students’ English literacy development. The research also explores the
potential of the social media in pedagogy and the implications of incorporating it into program
design and teaching.

students spend utilizing social media in various academic processes?

teachers to provide effective lessons and guidance to students using better materials in
developing their language proficiency. The goal of this qualitative research is to explore how
rural students can get same facilities as the urban students get by using social media.

usage of social media that could occur in real context, such as English proficiency using by
social media among students. This research does intend to prove hypotheses or test a theory;
rather it investigating phenomena in order to generate theory from data. Then, the research will

As the researcher attempts to find out following statement mention below as research hypotheses
of the paper.

ii. social media has negative impact on learner to some extend

Hypotheses 3:

Thesis out line:

This study examines the use of social media in English language learning among

students and the impact of the social media among students proficiency English. The outline of

the study is below here in brief for the quick overview:

Chapter I is about the introduction of the study. Here, the researcher will be shown the

background of the study and also have contextualized the study about social media This section

also includes the statement of problem, objective of the study, research questions, and research

hypotheses, significance of the study, definition of keywords and limitations of the study.

Chapter II is an insight of the literature review that are relevant to the use of social media in

the findings.
Then, chapter III is about the information on the research design and research methodologies,
including the research tools and instruments, analysis, ethics and limitation of the research. This

Chapter explains the methodology of the study in order to gather information as to how social

media helps learners.

The chapter IV contains findings, analysis, interpretation and discussion on the data collected

through questionnaire and information obtained through observation and discussion with focus

group.

In Chapter V is the researcher provide some recommendations on certain issues after gathering

all information and data analysis.

Finally, the chapter VI is the conclusion of the study culminating the result and the discussion of

the study.

Anticipated outcome:

Social media influences in new generation in beyond description. As most of

the platforms are in English, there is an unconscious attempted done by learners learn English in

order to relevant in social media. As English is international language, the new generation want

to be in wide range on social media so for them English is must. Again there are several

platforms now in social media that help learners get free English language learning in social

media platforms in Bangladesh. There are 10 minute school pathsala, various You Tube

channel giving student free education in social media platforms. After corona virus pandemic

conduction online class was social media based. So I can anticipate that there will be a relation

between social media and proficiency of English. As the online based education is getting
popular because the materials use in there is interesting for learners from traditional classroom

for that the learners also have an impact of social media in English language learning.

Conclusion:

Social media is constantly changing the people way of living in different aspect.

Though there is inevitable impact of social media in individuals’ lives in every aspect, and

students are losing interest in their old fashioned instructing method and learning techniques,

there are not many studies about how social media impact in learning and education particularly

in English language learning. This study can give us an idea about the impact of social media and

how we can aliment the negative aspect about it, help learners to have the most of that they want.
