CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

One of the languages that people use in communication is English. It becomes

popular than other languages, most fields of life in the world, such as education,

business, sport, science, medicines and technology used English. In the former case, it

is language that is widely used in society and learners need to acquire English in order

to communicate other widely. Language is the spirit of our soul, the basis of our

individualities. The shaping of individual language proficiency largely depends on the

frequency of his or her use. English proficiency requires meaningful interaction in the

target language and the relationship between student’s use of language learning

strategies and their proficiency.

The Philippines is regarded as one of the largest English-speaking nations

(Cabigon,2015). When the Philippine-American war ended in 1902, the American

colonial administration introduced English as the primary language of government,

business, and education.At present, English is constitutionally named one of the official

language of the Philippines. It is the primary medium of instruction in education

(Cabigon,2015) and the language of business, science, technology, government, and

international communication. With two-thirds of the population fluent in English

(Mariñas, 2021), the Philippines is also one of the major ESL destinations.
Despites the fact that the majority of the Philippine population has at least some

degree of fluency in the English language, a gradual deterioration can be observed

based on the EF English Proficiency Index (an annual ranking both their level of

English) over the past years. From 14th place in 2018 to 20th in 2019, the Philippines’

ranking dropped to 27th. Through in 2021, the Philippines climbed up to rank 18, it is still

far from its 13th ranking way back in 2016.There seems to be existence of strong

relationship between practices used in teaching English as a second language to

primary learners with student’s achievements. There are also researches that

investigates the problem and the practice of English language teaching in

PHILIPPINES. The aim of the paper is to identify the factors that contribute to low or

limited English literacy achievement among Filipino’s learners and identify the best

practice that can be implemented to improve primary student’s achievements.

There are some general points of good practice that helpful in almost all

situations when teachers are teaching English as a second language. Some suggest

teachers need to plan ahead, ask for and welcoming feedback, start and finish on time,

respect students and maintain a sense of humor. There are also suggestions about the

use of teaching aids, pictures, realia and of course ICT might help to enhance student’s

interest in learning English.

Many lines of songs, poems, speeches, essay and all forms of communication tells

us that words do not come easily, as we go along in our lives we always learn and

discover new things around. Word are so powerful as we are proficient in English, it is
powerful to the point that it can invade our senses, intellect and controlling our

emotional state.As we talk, speak and deliver sound and words are being considered as

a unit of language and human communication, and whether in the written or spoken

form, the power of a language always depends on how they are used, as it shapes the

individual language of English proficiency.

In every failed, courses and majors, English language is always present because

the aim of it is to develop the performance and communication skills of the students. To

supply improvement that comes from communicative and comprehensive input, as a

valuable starting point for the development of the students and their excellence.

Learning English is difficult if we don’t know about that language. English is known

as the second language that people have to master it. Many countries include English

language on their writings, the example is from Students text book. Students text books

always include English language on it, to understand it the students must have very

basic knowledge about English. Because of that, people have to understand English

language as their second language.

With the role of being a global language goes the need for a large vocabulary,

and the vocabulary of English is huge. The online Oxford English Dictionary has over

600,000 headwords; words collector claims count of one millions and more words

Remarkably, the vocabulary of a university-educated person is about 50,000 words, and

any one speaker can only use a tiny portion of the full range of English. Trades, groups,
professions and activities have all their own vocabularies; the international Scientific

Vocabulary is the largest with 200,000 words though each scientific area has its own

subset of that great number. English has borrowed words from 350 languages, mainly

from French (20,000). English has given words to as many languages as it has

borrowed from, and it has probably give to very many more.

Language is one of the attribution that sets humans apart from all other creatures

and binds humans together across all geographic barriers. A words can cause to sink

into the deepest despair or lift us to inspired action. Language can be the tool for great

achievement in any discipline. Good understanding of the capabilities and needs of the

individual child and a sound knowledge and belief in the goals of language program are

vital factors in successful individualization of instruction. 

Today, everyone recognizes the importance of learning the English language.

Moreover, the advent of the importance of learning the English online a better option

that doing it in a traditional classroom. The ability to speak and write English properly

allows people to advance in the professional world. Being able to speak in English also

widens one’s horizon in communicating globally. A proof of the necessity of learning

English is the proliferation of websites that offer English lessons online. Another proof

the increasing number of people who prefer this medium of learning every day.
In Concepcion National High School there are a lot of difficulties among Grade 10

students. Most of them had problems in English. Students learn English through

communicate simple English language. However, some of them had problems on how

to speak accurately and fluently.

Therefore, the general objectives of this study were to discover the speaking ability

and Academic performances of Grade – 10 students of Concepcion National High

School, where there’s only 25 (twenty-five) respondents using simple random sampling

techniques.

Statement of the Problem

The researchers seek to discover the speaking ability and academic

performances of Concepcion National High School Grade – 10 students. It aims to

answer the following questions:

1. What is the level of difficulty in Learning English of Grade – 10 students in

speaking ability?

2. Is there significant relationship of speaking ability and academic performance

of Grade – 10 students?
Significance of the Study

The main purpose if this study is to discover the speaking ability and academic

performances of Grade – 10 students. The result of the study will be beneficial to the

following persons:

English Teacher. They can use this study to educate some students to learn and apply

English language.

Students. The use of the teachers and learning process will surely attract the student’s

attention in practice English language.

For Researchers. This research can enlarge our knowledge, get some experiences,

and it is expected to be the one of the references in teaching English to the students. It

would be also benefit to the other researchers who want to have further study on

English language.

Scope and limitations

This study involves the Grade – 10 students of Concepcion National High School

in the academic year 2022 – 2023. This study is only limited to their 3 rd Grading

performances of the school year. The data gathered will be analyzed using

questionnaire.
Definition of terms

The terms used in this study are defined Operationally and Technically.

Academic. Learned or scholarly but lacking in wordiness, common sense, or

practically.

Determining. To find out or come to a decision about by investigation, reasoning, or

calculation.

Effects. A change that result when something is done or happens.

English. Belonging or relating to England, or to its people, language, or culture.

Performance. The execution of an action.
