MUSHROOM IN THE RAIN

BY MIRA GINSBURG

One day, an ant was caught in the rain. “where

can I hide?” she wondered. She saw a tiny
mushroom on the ground and hid under it. She
stayed there waiting for the rain to stop. But the
rain came down harder and harder. A wet
butterfly crawled up to the mushroom. “friend
ant, let me come in from the rain. I am so wet, I
cannot fly.”
“How can I let you in? there enough room for
me” she said
“it does not matter, better crowded than wet
“said the butterfly. The ant moved over and
made room for the butterfly. The rain came
down harder and harder. A mouse ran up. “let
me under the mushroom!”, shouted the mouse
“how can we let you in, there is no space here”,
said the butterfly. “Just move a little closer”,
request the mouse. The ant and the butterfly let
the mouse in the rain came down harder and
harder.
A little sparrow hopped up to the mushroom,
crying. “My feathers are dripping; my wings are
so tired. Please, let me in under the mushroom
to dry out and rest until the rain stops”, the
sparrow cried. “But how can we let you in, there
is no space here?
“Please, move over just a little!” They move
over and there was a space for sparrow. Then
the rabbit hopped into the mushroom and said
“oh hide me, save me! a fox is chasing me! “a
poor rabbit, said the ant. “Let’s crowd ourselves
a little more and take him!”
The fox turned up his nose, flicked his tail, and
ran off. By then, the rain was over.
The sun came out and everyone came out from
under the mushroom happily. The ant looked at
her friends and asked, “How could this be? At
first, I had enough space under the mushroom,
just for myself and at the end, all five of us were
able to sit under it, how impossible!” and
suddenly, someone spoke beside them
They looked around and they saw a fat, green
frog sitting on the top of the mushroom, shaking
his head at them “Don’t you know what happens
to a mushroom in the rain?” asked the frog.
And he hopped away laughing. The ant, the
butterfly, the mouse, the sparrow and the rabbit
looked at each other, then they looked at the
mushroom. “It grows!” shouted the rabbit. “The
mushroom grows in the rain, as it rains stronger,
the mushroom grows bigger that’s why there
was enough space for all of us”
