FAMOUS FILIPINO SCIENTIST

1. Ramon Cabanos Barba

Dr. Ramon C. Barba is recognized for his significant contributions to Philippine

Agriculture through horticulture. He developed a process that caused the flowering and fruiting of mango trees three
times a year, instead on once a year, so dramatically improving yields. His work found applications in advancing the
mango export industry. His research on tissue culture of many horticultural crops, bananas, cassava, and sugarcane
among others, enabled the development of methodologies in physiology and plant breeding. In 2013 Ramon Barba
became National Scientist in the Philippines for his “distinguished achievements in the field of plant physiology,
focusing on induction of flowering of mango and on micro propagation of important crop species.”

2. Josefino Cacas Comiso

Josefino Cacas Comiso is a senior research scientist at the Cryospheric

Sciences Laboratory of the Goddard Space Flight Center. He received his
Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from the University of the Philippines,
Masters Degree in Physics from Florida State University and Ph. D. in physics
from the University of California in Los Angeles. For his work on observing the
characteristics of Antarctica by using satellite images.

.Jose Bejar Cruz Jr.3

Lemery Colleges
A. Bonifacio St., Brgy. Bagong Sikat, Lemery, Batangas

SCHOOL OF COMPUTER STUDIES

Dr. Jose B. Cruz, Jr. is recognized for pioneering and established theories, principles, analysis tools, and design
methodologies in complex systems with dynamic feedback mechanisms. His work focuses on sensitivity analysis and
on multi-agent based modelling for decentralization and control in large systems or networks.. Here, Dr. Cruz
pioneered developing the leader-follower strategies, which were useful for simulating military strategies as US was
involved in the Korean War at the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign. His research finds flexibility in being
applicable in various fields, from engineering, to other areas like biology, chemistry, physics, economics, and social
sciences.

4.Lourdes J. Cruz

Is a Filipino biochemist whose research has contributed to the understanding of

the biochemistry of toxic peptides from the venom of fish-hunting Conus marine snails. Throughout the Philippines,
she is known as the Sea Snail Venom Specialist. The characterization of over 50 biologically active peptides from the
snail's venom had been made possible, in part, by her studies. Scientific findings regarding the peptides found in snails
have applications in diagnostic tools for cancers and the development of drugs for the treatment of neurological
disorders. She has also contributed to the development of conotoxins as tools for examining the activity of the human
brain. Her contributions to science have earned her several awards and acknowledgements including being named a
National Scientist of the Philippines in 2006

5.Fabian Millar Dayrit

SCHOOL OF COMPUTER STUDIES

Fabian M. Dayrit is a professor of chemistry of the Department of Chemistry, School of Science and Engineering,
Ateneo de Manila University. He served as the first dean of the Ateneo de Manila University's School of Science and
Engineering. He graduated from Ateneo de Manila High School. He then pursued B.S. Chemistry at the Ateneo de
Manila University (cum laude). Then he attended Princeton University in New Jersey, U.S. where he finished his M.S.
and Ph.D. degrees.[1]
He is also the current Director of the National. He is also the current President of the Integrated Chemists of the
Philippines.

6.Rafael Dineros Guerrero III

Rafael Dineros Guerrero III was a Filipino Inventor of vermicomposting and vermimeal. He was also recognized as an
expert in tilapia which he initiated the innovation SRT-95 or Sex-Reversed Tilapia, 95% Male Fry The first problem
in the tilapia industry is the congestion of fish in the fishery. For this reason, male tilapia grow faster, and this is what
needs to be separated. He thought about the sex reversal and then after two years if research, he also managed to
convert tilapia sperm cells into pure males by feeding them the male sex hormone.

7.Enrique Mapua Ostrea Jr.

Lemery Colleges
A. Bonifacio St., Brgy. Bagong Sikat, Lemery, Batangas

SCHOOL OF COMPUTER STUDIES

Dr. Enrique M. Ostrea was recognized for his significant contributions in the field of pediatrics, specifically in
neonatal hyper bilirubinemia, neonatal drug addiction and his pioneering work on the detection of fetal exposure to
drugs, tobacco smoke, alcohol and environmental toxicants by analysis of meconium. Among his outstanding works
are the development of the meconium drug test, one of the most sensitive tests to detect fetal exposure to illicit drugs
by the analysis of meconium; the development of an affordable Philippine-made ventilator for sick newborn infants;
his US NIH funded studies in the Philippines on fetal exposure to environmental pesticides and its long term effect on
the neurobehavioral development of infants and children and his collaborative study on food supplementation of pre-
school Filipino children with Moringa-enriched snacks which resulted in improvement in their IQ.

8.Lilian Formalejo Patena

Lilian Pateña is a Filipino scientist who discovered a breed of calamansi and seedless pomelo and discovered micro
propagation which established the banana industry in the Philippines. She is also an inventor of leaf-bud cutting in
cassava. She was recognized as one of The Outstanding Women in the Nation's Service (TOWNS) in 1998, Women of
Distinction for Science and Technology in 1995, and Outstanding Young Scientist in 1990.
