Description of Defect :

Description of the Defect : Tesla vehicles are equipped with a pyrotechnic battery disconnect that isolates
the high voltage (HV) battery when the vehicle detects certain collisions or
specific issues within its HV battery. Affected vehicles may have been
manufactured with a non-functioning pyrotechnic battery disconnect.

Description of the Safety Risk : battery when the vehicle detects certain collisions or specific issues within its
HV battery may increase the risk of injury.
Description of the Cause : During the supplier’s introduction of a new assembly line of the pyrotechnic
battery disconnect, the supplier may have inadvertently shipped to Tesla some
non-functioning pyrotechnic battery disconnects.

Chronology :
- On April 20, 2023, Tesla identified a non-functioning pyrotechnic battery disconnect during the validation test
conducted in support of the supplier’s introduction of a new assembly line for the disconnect.

- On Aprill 26, 2023, Tesla engineering and the supplier began investigating the root-cause for the non-
functioning pyrotechnic battery disconnect.

- On May 5, 2023, the supplier sent additional pyrotechnic battery disconnects from its new production line.
These parts were built into saleable vehicles because the engineering investigation conducted to that point did
not indicate that additional units were affected by the same condition.

- On May 26, 2023, Tesla engineering and the supplier completed the investigation and determined that the one
non-functioning pyrotechnic battery disconnect discovered on April 20, 2023, was shipped to Tesla due to a
gap in the supplier’s traceability process in its new assembly line.

- From May 30, 2023, to June 9, 2023, Tesla conducted the risk assessment and investigated the scope of
potentially impacted customer vehicles.

- On June 12, 2023, having completed the risk assessment, Tesla made the determination to file a voluntary
recall to inspect and repair, as necessary, the population of vehicles identified through the investigation
described above.

- As of June 16, 2023, Tesla has identified 0 warranty claims and 0 field reports that are related to or may be
related to this condition. Tesla is not aware of any crashes, injuries, or deaths related to this condition.

Description of Remedy :

Description of Remedy Program : At no cost to the customer, Tesla Service will replace the pyrotechnic
battery disconnect on affected vehicles with a replacement unit that has
been tested and certified by the supplier to be functioning as designed.

Tesla does not plan to include a statement in the Part 577 owner
notification about pre-notice reimbursement because there are no out of
warranty repairs related to this condition.
How Remedy Component Differs The replacement pyrotechnic battery disconnect has been tested and
from Recalled Component : certified by the supplier to be functioning as designed.
Identify How/When Recall Condition All pyrotechnic battery disconnects from the batch that contained the one
was Corrected in Production : non-functioning unit were identified and removed from production.
Vehicles manufactured but not yet delivered with a recalled pyrotechnic
battery disconnect will receive a replacement unit prior to delivery.

Description of Recall Schedule : All Tesla stores and service centers will be notified on or shortly after
June 19, 2023. Owner notification letters will be mailed in accordance
with 49 C.F.R. § 577.7.
