ASSIGNMENT - 1

Answers to questions based on my reading of THE PROFESSIONAL

NAME – SAMRIDDH TENGURIA

ROLL NO. - 102102149
ASSIGNMENT – 1

Ques. State the importance of listening in communication.

Ans. 10.

Listening is very essential thing in communication. It is a physical function as much as it is

art. Good professionals are invariably great listeners. The interesting thing about listening is
that the other person gets to feel instantaneously that he is being listened to. Hence, a
positive energy starts flowing between the two people who are in conversation and this
positive energy is a prerequisite for problem solving and collaboration.

• It helps in making conversation better.

• It helps in bringing effective solution of a problem.
• It can teach how to understand things better in a social and professional
environment
• It improves socializing culture in an individual
• It gives a clear understanding about the situation
• It helps in building good relationships by making people feel that they are being
listened to.
• Improves leadership skills because a good leader is someone who responds
accurately in much lesser time
• It helps in cultivating a good habit of avoiding unnecessary conflicts.

According to Subroto Bagchi , Communication is one of the key attributes of a professional

and communication without listening is a thing which we cannot imagine at all. There are
many key attributes of a Professional according to Subroto Bagchi which are indirectly
related to importance of listening in communication , like -: if someone is lagging in listening
during communication, then he/she might end up with taking wrong decisions , which finally
lead to poor quality of work which is not a key attribute of a Professional.
One more example can be, if someone lags in habit of listening habit during communication
then he might end up in misunderstanding the result of a particular conversation, which can
lead to improper planning, lack of growth in professional skills, etc. and these all aren’t key
attributes of a Professional.

Finally, I would like to conclude by saying that Listening is an indispensable part of

communication.

Ques. What are some of your recurring time wasters? What should you start doing to manage
your time better ?
Ans. 6.

Some of my recurring time wasters are -:

• Checking social media whether someone has sent any important message or not
• Overthinking about my brain
• Thinking so much about my past and future
• Spending so much time idle with my friends on phone calls
• Bringing thoughts of suicide in my mind

To manage my time better, I think -:

• I should do meditation on daily basis for avoiding overthinking and improving my

overall efficiency.

• I should fix a time limit on usage of social media platforms

• I must admit that I cannot change my past, things which are gone, cannot come
back. I need to understand that I have only present in my hand to improve my
future, rest all I cannot change. If I will keep on crying and thinking about past for
what mistakes I had done that I hadn’t been achieved my desired results , then all I
will get as a result will be demotivation and will loose my present which will be going
to have the highest effect on my coming future.
• I should also talk about my problems to my parents(who knows me the most) and to
other people like seniors who have already gone through all these situations . I
should not hesitate in accepting my mistakes and should talk frankly with people
who have faced all these situations already.
• I should also improve my relationship with each second of my life, I must maintain a
proper record of my daily time consumption in each work that I do in a day . I should
analyze this record every day before going to bed and try to maintain that 75
percent of my total time spent in a day must be consumed in something productive
• I must avoid bringing thoughts of suicide in my mind because I must understand one
thing that if someone try consistently hard in any field , then either today or
tomorrow or day after tomorrow he/she will reach to the pinnacle of his/her desire.

Ques. You are stuck in the middle of a project and it requires expertise from another group.

You do not like the head of the group. He comes across as a chest beater in meetings.
Are you more likely or less likely to leave aside the prejudice and walk across to his
office?

Ans. 8.

• I am more likely to leave aside the prejudice and walk across to his office even if I
don’t like him because a good professional is someone who seeks for help
whenever he tries and doesn’t get any solution. So, as a professional it’s my prime
responsibility that if I’m stuck somewhere in my project then I must seek for help to
complete my project without any hesitation. Seeking for help will not lower down
my image in any aspect of my personality before him. Sometimes, discussion with
others brings more qualitative results easily and it is also possible that after talking
with him I will bring some changes in his chest beating behavior . I will get to know
much about him and can set up a long-term friendship relation with him .

• Without approaching him for help, I won’t be able to learn a new skill , I won’t be
able to add quality in my work and according to Subroto Bagchi, a professional is
someone who has the mindset of learning continuously, quality of work, professional
knowledge.

• Action orientation and goal seeking is also another attribute of a professional. So, if I
won’t go and seek for help , then this quality won’t be reflected from my
professional behavior.

• A professional is not someone who know everything right from the beginning of a
particular work, but someone who can rapidly tap in to other experts and utilize
their help and knowledge required to solve a problem is a real professional and this
thing requires commitment , ownership and action orientation.

• Professional is someone who can deal situations even if those are just opposite to
his/her will, either by his/her own knowledge or by taking help from others and
creates a beacon like presence in the world.

• These all qualities of a true professional according to Subroto Bagchi will be

reflected from me only when I will walk across his office and seek for his expertise
to complete my project.

Ques. List out a few personal dreams that you would like to achieve in the next five years,

starting next year and continuing each year after that. Write down why you want to do

this and how you would go about it.

Ans. 5.

As life doesn’t go always like how we imagine, but still, we try to have dreams which
sometimes convert into reality but some other times they just remain inside the almirah of
our thoughts for always.
So, keeping in mind this thought, I would like to list out few dreams that I would like to
achieve in the next five years. I want to keep many options open for me like – Data Analyst,
Data Scientist , Management role(supply chain, consulting) or chemical engineer in some
good oil and gas industry or software developer. Accordingly, I have planned my next five
years.

I want to do these many things just because I don’t know where my destiny will take to me
and currently, exploring all these things in a balanced way which gives me immense
pleasure.
My plan is that till now, I have a good grip on Data structures and Algorithms which is
known as root for any type of job in the field of software development, so , in next few
months I am planning to get a decent grip on web development and on machine learning. I
want to do all these things in next 8 to 10 months because I want to work as a freelancer in
my college life just for fun and for earning money on my own. After these months, I am
planning to continue my interests in these fields and to increasing my knowledge in the field
of management(supply chain) which I have already started by now also because according
to me this is the role which pays the most and chances of getting fired in this role in
corporate sector are very less. Regarding about my dream as a chemical engineer , I want to
keep it always open for me by maintaining a high CGPA in my B. tech. After 2 years of
hustling in all these dreams, Finally I will find out my dream job and there I will settle down
and then I will continue to increase my skill set in same.

Ques. What have you learned in your profession that makes you more employable in the

future. Mention professional courses and personal milestone.

Ans. 3.

Till now, I am in my second year of B.Tech. in chemical engineering. I tried but couldn’t get
into many clubs and teams of my college, so I don’t have much diversified things which I
have learnt during my professional course of B.Tech. . But I have learnt many technical skills
like -: Data Science, Machine Learning, Data Structures and Algorithms , web development
and gained a decent knowledge in subjects of my core chemical engineering like -: Polymer
science and technology, Chemical Technology, Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics,
Momentum Transfer, Professional Ethics. In these courses , I have learnt so many topics
which are base for any chemical engineer , working on a real-life problem in industry. In
these courses, I got to learn about various types of equipment, their working principles, and
a lot more which drive me to learn more about other courses of chemical engineering
without giving a second thought. Talking about personal milestone, I have received
department rank 3 in my first semester of my college. I have already solved many
questions related to DSA on online platforms because this provides me a lot of happiness. In
other areas of my interests, I need to receive any such milestone yet. But I would even like
to include my rejections from various clubs and teams of college in my personal milestone.
Because from these rejections, I have learnt so many things which can help me in becoming
more employable in the future, they taught me how to speak confidently , how to speak
diplomatically , how to criticize indirectly , how to decide that how much I should speak and
what are the things which I am not supposed to speak in front of interviewers and finally
they taught me the most important thing and that is how to face rejections.

So, these are the things according to me which I have learnt as a student in my
professional course of B.Tech. that makes me more employable in the future.
