Directions : Each of these questions contain two statements, Assertion and Reason. Each of these
questions also has four alternative choices, only one of which is the correct answer. You have to select
one of the codes (a), (b), (c) and (d) given below.

(a) Assertion is correct, reason is correct; reason is a correct explanation for assertion.
(b) Assertion is correct, reason is correct; reason is not a correct explanation for assertion
(c) Assertion is correct, reason is incorrect

( d) Assertion is false Reason is false

Answer

Q16 Assertion: The potential difference between any two points in an electric field depends only on
initial and final position.

Reason: Electric field is a conservative field so the work done per unit positive charge does not
depend on path followed.

Q.17 Assertion : Electric field inside a conductor is zero.

Reason: The potential at all the points inside a conductor is same.

Q.18. Assertion : If the distance between parallel plates of a capacitor is halved and dielectric
constant is three times, then the capacitance becomes 6 times.

Reason : Capacity of the capacitor does not depend upon the nature of the material.
Q.19. Assertion : A parallel plate capacitor is connected across battery through a key. A dielectric
slab of dielectric constant K is introduced between the plates. The energy which is stored becomes K
times.

Reason : The surface density of charge on the plate remains constant or unchanged.

Q.20.Assertion : The total charge stored in capacitor is zero.

Reason : The field just outside the capacitor is σ/ε0 . (σ is the charge density).

Case Study

When an insulator is placed in an external field E the dipoles become aligned. Induced surface charges
on the insulator establish a polarization field Ēi in its interior. The net electric field inside insulator
reduces .

On the application of external electric field, the effect of aligning the electric dipoles in the insulator
is called

Polarisation and the field Ē; is known as the polarisation field.

The dipole moment per unit volume of the dielectric is known as polarisation (P).

For linear isotropic dielectrics, P =χE, where χ = electrical susceptibility of the dielectric medium.
