A cooling water with temperature and convection coefficient of 25 °C and 150 W/m?K, respectively flow passes this circular tube. The two layers conductive material consists of a 2 mm thickness layer of aluminum oxide which is contacted with the hot air. While the outer layer with 3 mm thickness of beryllium oxide (k = 272 W/m'K) which is contacted with the cooling water. The length of the tube is 15 m and the radiation effect can be neglected. Cooling air Tax25C LZ ‘heg=1S0Wim?K Hor air Tay 250°e hha =120WinK Figure Qi(a) @ If the contact resistance between the double layers of the tube is negligible, identify its effect on the overall heat transfer coefficient for this system. (9 marks) (ii) Determine the rate of heat transfer and heat flux through this system. B marks) (iii) Under steady state conditions, determine the temperatures of the inner tube’s surface and the outer tube’s surface. (6 marks) The steady state temperature distribution in a one-dimensional plane wall with thickness 27. and thermal conductivity of 100 mm and 20 W/nK is observed to be in unit of °C/m? and 6 is in unit of °C, as shown in Figure Q1(b). Both surfaces of this plane wall are subjected to convection cooling by an ambient air at temperature and convection coefficient of 25°C and 5 W/mK, respectively. If the heat generation in this plane wall is 1x10" W/m’, determine the temperature distribution equation of this plane wall with values of a and b. (Determine the heat generation of the plane wall. (5 marks) Estimate the outlet mean temperature of the water flow. (4 marks) Determine the rate of heat transfer from the tube surface to the water flow. (3 marks) [Total : 30 marks] This final assessment paper consists of 3 questions on 8 printed pages.7 UEME3213 HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER Q3. @ ) A counter flow concentric thin-walled heat exchanger is used to cool the hot oil discharge from a chemical reactor. The cooling water with flow rate of 0.2 kg/s and inlet temperature of 25°C enters the inner tube with 50 mm diameter as shown in Figure Q3(a). On the other hand, the hot oil enters the outer annulus of the heat exchanger at mass flow rate of 0.15 kg/s and inlet temperature of 100°C. ‘Mass flow rate (hot oil) =0.15ke/s This 120°C hy o=120 W/m?K Ter25°C Tear 35°C Gi) ii) Figure Q3(a) Determine the temperature of the hot oil discharge from the heat exchanger. GB marks) Based on your working from Q3(a)(i), evaluate the log mean temperature difference (LMTD) of this heat exchanger. (4 marks) Evaluate the suitable length of the tube in the heat exchanger by providing necessary calculation to support your answer. (7 marks) Consider a large isothermal enclosure where the inner surface of the enclosure is maintained at uniform temperature of 2500 K. @ (i) At maximum emission, determine the wavelength and the maximum spectral emissive power. (6 marks) Discuss the relation between the wavelength and the percentage of concentrated emission in accordance to the condition where the wavelengths below and above which 10% of the emission is concentrated.
