Assignment 8

1) A study examined drunk driving rates in 50 U.S. states that used different strategies to reduce drunk driving. The states were classified into three groups: those with "get tough" policies, "moral appeal" campaigns, and control states with no special policies. 2) An ANOVA analysis found a significant difference in mean drunk driving rates between the three groups of states. Specifically, the between-groups variance of 475.3 was greater than the within-groups variance of 204.5, resulting in an F ratio of 1.99 which exceeded the critical value of 4.01 using an alpha of 0.01. 3) The effect size of 0.69 indicated that 69% of the total

Assignment 8 Name: CELSA SWARTWOOD

Due 12/03 (20 Points)

PART I: T-Tests (10 points)

1. Decide whether you reject or fail to reject the null and interpret for the following statistical tests
(4 points)
a. Ho: μw = 80; Ha: μw ≠ 80; α = .05; Zcv = ±1.96; Zobtained = +2.33
REJECTED

b. Ho: μw = 80; Ha: μw ≠ 80; α = .05; tcv = ±2.042; tobtained = +2.23

REJECTED

c. Ho: μw = 80; Ha: μw ¿ 80; α = .05; tcv = -1.697; tobtained = -1.58

FAIL TO REJECTED

d. Ho: μ1= μ2; Ha: μ1 ¿ μ2; α = .05; tcv = -1.64; tobtained = -1.58
FAIL TO REJECTED

2. Some research has found that female defendants are sentenced less harshly than males, while
other research shows little or no evidence of gender disparities in sentencing. Suppose you have
a random sample of 50 male and 25 female defendants who were found guilty of burglary. The
mean sentence length received for male and female defendants, along with respective standard
deviations and sample sizes are presented below. Use an alpha level α = .05 to test the following
hypotheses. (6 Points)
a. Ho: μMale = μFemale
b. Ha: μMale ≠ μFemale

Male Female
Defendant Defendant
s s

X = 12.02 X = 3.32
Sd = 72.68 Sd= 11.31

N1 = 50 N2 = 25

1) FOR MY HYPOTESIS I BELIEVE THAT WILL BE HIGHER THAN FEMALE Ha: μMale ≠ μFemale
2) A=0.05 df=50 + 25 – 2 =73 tobtained 1.99
3) 12.02-3.32 = 12.02-3.32 = 8.7=0.82
√72.68²+11.31² √105.64+5.11 10.52
50 25
4) 0.82<1.99
5) Ha: μMale ≠ μFemale is correct based on the t expected versus t critical

PART II: One-Way ANOVA (10 Points)

One of the most pressing social problems is the problem of drunk driving. Drunk driving causes untold
human suffering and has profound economic effects. States have tried various things to inhibit drunk
driving. Some states have tried to cut down on drunk driving within their borders by “getting tough” with
drunk drivers. One way to do this is to suspend their driver’s license and impose heavy fines, as well as
jail and prison sentences, on those convicted of drunk driving. Other states have tried a “moral appeal” by
mounting public relations campaigns that proclaim the harm and injury produced by drunk driving. You
want to determine the effectiveness of these strategies. You calculate the rate of drunk driving per
1000,000 residents for each of the 50 states, and classify each state into one of three categories: a “get
tough” state, a “moral appeal” state, or a “control” state. The latter states do not do anything special to
those who get caught drunk driving. Your summary data look like the following. Interpret everything
below.

Get tough states Moral appeal states Control states

N1 = 15 N2 = 15 N3 = 15
x 1 = 125.2 x 2 = 119.7 x 3 = 145.3

Sum of Squares Df Variance F

(SS/DF)
Between-Groups 475.3
Within-Groups 204.5
Total 679.8

With these summary data, do the following:

a. Identify the independent variables and dependent variables, and levels of measurement
I.V=get tough states nd moral appeal states D.V=control states level of measurement = ordinal

b. Determine the correct number of degrees of freedom, calculate the ratio of sum of squares to degrees of
freedom (mean square), and determine the F ratio
BETWEEN GROUPS WITHIN GROUPS
D.O.F=15 D.O.F=15
V=31.68 V=13.63
F RATIO 1.99

c. With an alpah of .01 (α = .01), test the null hypothesis that the three populations means are equal
against the alternative hypothesis that some of them are different (you can google “.01 f-table”)

ALPHA=4.01 475.3/204.5=33.95/17.04=1.99 1.99<4.01 REJECTED THE NULL

14 12
d. Calculate and interpret eta squared
475.3/679.8=0.69 n²=0.69
