STFX Spring-2023 - Convocation Program-MASTER MORNING FINAL
STFX Spring-2023 - Convocation Program-MASTER MORNING FINAL
Your education has presented you with many different lenses with which to
view the world and has also helped to hone the intellectual tools that will
enable you to make a difference to all of those around you. You are the future
leaders of our society, and our hope is that with your many skills and abilities,
you will bring positive change to our world.
Go make a difference.
This is a special day for each of you, as it marks the end of your diverse journeys.
The parchment you receive today both symbolizes your years of hard work and
admits you into the alumni family of StFX – and that should make you very proud.
Sixty years ago, almost to the day, I had the pleasure of receiving my degree from
StFX – as did my wife, Adrienne. Admittedly, the campus and the student body
were considerably smaller then than they are today, but not much else has
changed. That’s part of the magic of this university; despite advancements and
modernization, StFX has always devoted itself to the holistic academic, social,
and civic education of its students.
You will experience a world that is very different from the one that I faced in 1963.
In many ways, your world is more daunting than mine. One significant difference
is the advent of technology, which has heightened our awareness of the world
beyond our own small communities. It can feel overwhelming at times, to know
so much about global hardships. But I believe that your StFX education will do for
you what it did for me and Adrienne: empower you to seek understanding; enable
you to understand complex challenges; and embolden you to take action for
positive change.
Congratulations, graduates! You have made it! Through all that you have
faced and overcome during these last few years, including the challenge of
completing your studies at StFX as the world faced a pandemic, you have
reached this very important milestone. I hope you take a moment today to
pause and truly reflect on this achievement. You should be so proud!
All of the hard work and dedication it has taken to earn your degrees,
from one of Canada’s best universities, has ensured you are each leaving
as individuals who are more educated, more informed, and more engaged
citizens of the world, ready and able to tackle what lies ahead.
Although this significant and special part of your lives is coming to a close,
another exciting one awaits! I have no doubt you will all continue to do
amazing things, with Xaverian values guiding your way. You are now officially
members of the StFX Alumni Association, joining a legacy of 50,000+ others
who have crossed this stage before you. This community of dedicated and
loyal Xaverians will be here to support you in the next phases of your lives,
providing everything from a warm welcome at your first StFX alumni chapter
event, to a friendly face (and familiar ring!) as you move to a new city, and so
much more to keep you connected to your now alma mater. We are looking
forward to getting to know you all!

For purposes of academic regalia, the university colours are described as Yale
blue and white, and they are used in identical fashion in the hoods for all earned
degrees. That is to say, the lining for hoods are all the same and serve to identify
the university rather than any particular degree. This lining, therefore, is blue
divided by a chevron of white.
The binding or edging of the hood is of velvet, two inches wide for all bachelor’s
degrees and three inches wide for all master’s degrees and five inches for PhD. The
academic discipline is recognizable from the colour of this velvet binding or trim.
Degree candidates will wear gowns and the hood of the degree to be received.
Colours of the lining of the hood are exposed over the left shoulder, velvet trim and
black shell on the right shoulder.
Diploma candidates will wear collars. If candidate also has a degree, the colours of
that degree should be worn.

Philippians 4:4–9
The St. Francis Xavier University motto is taken from the letter
of Paul to the Philippians. The following is an excerpt from the
epistle.
Keep doing all the things that you learned from me and have been
taught by me and have heard or seen that I do. Then the God of
peace will be with you.
