(c) Write an equation in x to represent EACH statement below. Do NOT solve the
equations.
(i) When 4 is added to a certain number x, the result is the same as
halving that number and then adding 10. (1 mark)

(ii) Squaring a number x and then adding 6 gives the same result as
doubling the number and then adding 9. (1 mark)

5
(d) John was thinking about a certain problem and draws the diagram below to
show what he was thinking.

(i) Use the information from the diagram to write a formula for y in terms
of x. (1 mark)

(ii) If the number 4 is the input what number would be the output?
(1 mark)

(iii) If the number 8 was the output what number would be the input?
(1 mark)

(iv) Using the formula, you developed in c(i), write x in terms of y.

(1 mark)

2. (a) (i) Solve the following inequalities and represent your answer on a
number line.
(a) 3 x−1<11 (2 marks)

6
(b) −4 x<10+ 2 x (3 marks)

(b) The diagram below shows the graph of three lines, L1 , L2∧L3 and the shaded
region R, which represents the common region of the three inequalities
associated with the lines L1 , L2∧L3 .

The table below shows some of the equations of the lines L1 , L2∧L3 with a space to
fill out the in equalities that define the region above. Copy and complete the table
below by filling out the missing information. (3 marks)

SECTION 2: PART C - APPLICATION

3. A jeweler paid $ 2516USD for 165bracelets bought from China. The Customers Department in
his country charged him $503 USD extra shipping cost.
(a) Calculate the TOTAL cost of the 165 brackets inclusive of shipping cost in USD.
(1 mark)

(b) The jeweler sold 165 bracelets at a selling price of $68.85 EC dollars EACH.
(i) Calculate the TOTAL amount of money he made on the sale of the 65 bracelets
(2 marks)

(ii) If 2.70 EC = 1USD. Calculate The TOTAL amount of money in USD he made on
his sales. Indicate whether he made a profit or a loss. (2 marks)

4. From his hotel window a tourist has a clear view of a clock tower. The window is 5
meters above ground level. The angle of depression of the bottom of the tower is 5° and
the angle of elevation of the top of the tower is 7°.

(a) How far is the hotel from the tower? (3 marks)

(b) A certain class, consisting of x girls and y boys, is preparing for an end of
semester party. The class decides to buy cake that comes to a total cost of $61
and juice that comes to a total cost of $42. For the cake, the girls contribute $2
dollars each and the boys $5 each. For the juice the girls contribute $3 dollars
each and the boys $2 dollars each. A simultaneous equation to represent this
information is given below:

2 x+ 5 y =61
3 x+ 2 y =42
(i) Write the equation in the form AX=B where A, X and B are matrices.

SECTION 2: PART D – COMMUNICATION

It is now the end of the semester, and a student named James has just joined the Grade 9
class. James loves mathematics and decides to do the Grade 9 math exam. James gets the
notes for the class and decides to start studying one week before the exam. James heard that
you are an excellent math student and decides to come to you to ask for help on some
concepts that he does not understand. He prepares a list of questions (given in Table 1
below). Please help James prepare for his exam by answering the questions.
