Rewrite the Star Song Interpretation Analysis

Sometimes the structure of song lyrics can be difficult, especially for people who are not

familiar with the referred to as licentia poetica. It is the poet's (songwriter's) specificity to stray

from the linguistic reality of standard forms or conventions in order to get the desired effect they

want to use in the songs. Particularly while listening for the first time, listeners struggle to

comprehend the song's content and find it difficult to follow the song writers' thoughts. This

could be as a result of the lyricist's preference for using words with several meanings in order to

grab listeners' attention with catchy lyrics. As a result of the incorrect message the listener

interprets from the song, it will become more difficult to understand the true or actual meaning.

Song lyrics are considered literary pieces that convey the author's emotions. It's because

music lyrics are works of language. The song's lyrics were written by the author based on a

personal experience that describes a person or a something. People listen to music for themselves

because they want to unwind, feel refreshed, and have fun. It is in accordance with Haupth's

(2016) thought, which claimed that music is a form of media that may uplift and inspire people.

In addition, according to Haupth (2016) song can help people fantasize or temporarily escape

from reality). A song, on the other hand, is a single musical composition sung by people in a

range of tones and patterns, according to Yuana (2017). Additionally, it employs sound and

silence in a variety of ways, frequently repeating elements of both. The lyrics, a song with verses

and a chorus, were written for the words.

The Greatest Showman song Rewrite the Star was chosen for this essay since it was

performing well on Billboard's list at the time. The fact that most people throughout the world

were interested in this music is what it demonstrates.

Rewrite the Stars is a love song that is featured on the soundtrack of The Greatest

Showman, a film that explores the life and career of P.T. Barnum, one of history's most

successful performers. One of the most memorable and moving scenes in the entire film is the

one where the song is played. Theater producer Philip Carlyle, played by Zac Efron, falls in love

with trapeze performer Anne Wheeler, played by Zendaya. Although Anne is a black lady from a

lower social level and Philip is a white man from a wealthy family, their backgrounds make it

impossible for them to have the relationship they both want. It is more difficult for them to be

together because of the social and racial prejudice that exists.

Rewrite the Stars, on the other hand, is an ode to the notion that love overcomes all

obstacles and that, in a relationship, the only thing that should count is the love between two

people, irrespective of any preset social conventions or cultural expectations that can stand in the

way. The song "Rewrite the Stars" is a potent collection of short, memorable words that together

express a message of resiliency and hope in the face of difficulty. Rewrite the Stars' lyrics are a

successful combination of short, memorable words that together express a message of resiliency

and optimism in the face of difficulty.

The song starts with Anne singing:

You know I want you

It’s not a secret I try to hide

I know you want me

So don’t keep saying our hands are tied

This song's lyrics demonstrate Anne's candor by blatantly stating her love for Philip and

the fact that social prejudice is the only thing standing in their way of union. She begs him not to
lose up on their relationship, telling him that they have options and that there is always a way

around a problem.

Philip responds to her by saying:

You say it’s easy

But it’s not easy

Here, he admits that defying social conventions and expectations is difficult, but he also

knows that their love is worth fighting for.

Insisting that they can find a way to be together despite the odds, Anne and Philip both

beg for each other as the song goes on. Despite being aware of the difficulties ahead of them,

their love for one another keeps them inspired. One of the song's most moving passages is when

they sing together and it is this line:

You rewrite the stars

Say you were made to be mine

Nothing can keep us apart

‘Cause you are the one I was meant to find

This lyric conveys the belief that love is more powerful than any negative aspects of

society. They contend that they can rewrite the stars and find a way to be together despite what

society may think because they were destined to be together.

Based on the overall lyrics, it can be interpreted that there are two people wanting to have

a relationship, but there are a lot of challenges. Those challenges are hard to be faced, and, it can

be seen from the lyrics that one of them thinks that they are not meant to be. Even though they

clearly know that they fall for each other, they are hopeless.
Too many things seem to distract their way to be with one another. It is why the title is

even “rewrite the stars.” It is given to emphasize that those people want to change their fate.

They want to make the impossible become possible. They definitely know that it will not be easy

for them if they decide to be a couple. However, the song indicates willingness even in the

middle of hopelessness.

Besides that, the lyric of the song also shows the power of love. Those two people in the

song actually do not want to give up on their relationship. They still wish that they could be

together and end up being a happy couple. Regardless of every obstacle, their love will remain.

The core message of the song is about “being realistic.” In love, people also need to be realistic.

No matter how much we love someone, if the condition and the challenges are too heavy, we

cannot force that. Even though the obstacles or the challenges are not explained explicitly in the

song,it can be clearly seen that the people in the song are eager to change their destiny. This

shows how unrealistic they are. They must be sad since they cannot get what they want, and they

still insist on fighting for their impossible relationship. Being too unrealistic in love is unhealthy

because it will only bring disappointment and dissatisfaction. Therefore, the core message that is

supposed to be understood by the listeners of this song is being realistic so that you can move on.

Regarding the Islamic-integrated interpretation of the song, it can be understood that if

we know that we cannot be with someone, we must accept the reality and move on. In Islam, it is

taught that “If something is meant for you, Allah will make it closer to you. Yet, if it is not meant

for you, Allah will replace it with something better.” In the song, those people are madly in love

with each other, but they know that they cannot start a relationship. Instead of trying to accept

the reality, they keep dreaming that they could be a couple. They ignore the sign from Allah that

through all the obstacles, they are, maybe, not good enough for each other.
In Islam, there is ayah 126 from Surah Al-Baqarah saying that “We may hate something

that turns out to be good for us, and we may also like something that turns out to be bad for us:

Allah knows, and you don’t.” From that ayah, it can be understood that even though we are faced

with the situation that we want, it does not mean that Allah desires it too. The song “Rewrite the

Stars” teaches us to understand the essence of accepting reality and starting to move forwards

from heartbreaking situation.

Rewrite the Stars is a song that, despite all odds, talks to the need for love and connection

in the human heart. The song's lovely lyrics and powerful vocals from Zac Efron and Zendaya

depict optimism and fortitude in the face of hardship. The song's central message is that, despite

all obstacles, we can always find a way to be with the people we love. More significantly, it

motivates us to challenge social conventions that exclude people based on their social standing,

race, or ethnicity and embrace those who belong in our life.
