LECTURE for ADOBE PHOTOSHOP INTRODUCTION: Adobe Photoshop is a Raster based Graphic Designing Software.

The easy way to learn the word Raster based is that, those software in which you see Pixelization (like image in small boxes). Other software known as Vector Based like CorelDraw and Illustrator. Adobe Photoshop is used for Graphic Designing, whether Web based or Print Media. Most probably web mockups are being designed in Photoshop. It is also use for Photo Laboratories. SCREEN SHOT: Whether you have to take new file or you have to open Existing file (either picture or your older files). On the left side you are watching Toolbox (from this you have to pick any tool of your desire and you can work on the file). Right area is used for Panels; you will get different Panels, like Layer, Channel, Styles, Character etc. etc. like additional commands for any tool etc. On top you are watching the Navigation bar and bellow that bar is Property Bar, it will change when you pick any tool. HOW TO TAKE NEW FILE? If you want to make anything of your own desire, you have to take new file. For this purpose you can press Ctrl+N shortcut key or you can run the command File >> New. You will see the following box: In this box you may write any name in Name box, this will be the name of your file when you will save the file first time then you will no need to type it again. From Preset you can choose Existing page sizes. In Width box you have to type the Width of your new file. Remember when we are going to work on any Web based project then we use Pixels in the Unit list box and if we are going to work on Print Media (like visiting card, brochure, letter pads etc.) then we have to use Inches, mm, cm etc. In Height box you have to put height of your new file. Resolution is the important thing. If you are going to work on Web based Project then you have to type 72 in this box. (i.e. Pixels/inch) and if you are working on Print Media then you may

change it from 150 to 300 (depending upon the nature of your project). Color Mode is also important; usually we take RGB when we are going to work on Web based projects, while for Print Media we usually used CMYK. From Background Contents you may chose White, Black, Color etc. This would be the background of your new file. Transparent will not be having any color in the background. (We will also use on many occasions). Hit OK after putting all of your desire values. After taking new file, you may go forward. Now you will be needing the Know-How about Toolbox and the Layer Panel. Toolbox: On the left side you will be watching different tools. This area is known as Toolbox. From this box you have to pick any Tool of your desire. If you want to see all Tools, then visit All Tools in Photoshop tutorial here Color Palette: You must be watching two different colors (Black & White by default) at the bottom of Toolbox. This is known as Color palette. From here you can chose two different colors, so you may use these in the file. Layer Panel: Layer Panel is the important panel. When you draw any object, it will come in new Layer. Working in layers will help you a lot, when you will be going to modify anything. Mean if you want to delete anything from your file and if it is present in separate layer, then you will have to delete that layer or to hide that layer. To Display or Hide this panel you will have to press only F7 (functional key). SHORCUT KEYS: Im going to write few shortcut keys here, because if you want to be a Professional then you have to use Shortcut keys instead of using Navigation bars etc. D: You will be using this when you need Default Black and White colors in Color Palette. X: If you want to exchange Foreground colors and Background colors in Color palette, just press X. Ctrl+D:

When you have selected any object and if you are watching Marching Ants, then press Ctrl+D to deselect. Ctrl+Shift+I: To inverse the selection, you will have to press Ctrl+Shift+I. Alt+Backspace: If you will press this key then Foreground color will be filled on whole layer or if you have selected anything then Foreground color will be filled over that area. For example if you have selected Black color in foreground and press Alt+Backspace, then black will be filled over whole area. Ctrl+Backspace: Background color will be filled over whole area, and if you have selected anything then it will fill that area. Ctrl+ + (plus): It will zoom in from the center of the file. Ctrl+ - (minus): It will zoom out. Spacebar+Mouse left: If you have zoomed in and you want to see the objects or area around, then hold Spacebar and drag the screen towards your desire direction. In this lecture we are going to be familiar with some Tools, because it is necessary to know some information about these tools, without that it would be difficult for you to go forward. So we will be trying to discuss most common tools. MARQUEE TOOL: Shortcut key M (and to use other Marquee tools inside it you have to use Shift+M) Inside this tool you will find four different tools, Rectangular Marquee Tool, Elliptical Marquee Tool, Single Row Marquee Tool and Single Column Marquee Tool. By using this tool you can select different Areas. Rectangular Marquee Tool: Before using this tool you have to see which layer is selected. Because it is essential to see whether you have selected the right layer or not. Just press F7 key to switch on Layer panel. Now select that layer on which you want to select the area by just clicking on that layer. Now hold this tool and draw any rectangle anywhere you desire location. Using Spacebar while selecting: If you have started the selection from different from your desire location then before leaving

the left click of mouse you can move selection. Just hold spacebar (without leaving the mouse left click), now drag mouse to your desire location and leave Spacebar. So you can move selection during drawing it. Using Shift key during/after selection: Suppose you have selected an area, now you want to select another area but keeping previous area selected, just hold Shift key and select any other area. Using Alt key during/after Selection: If you have selected an area and now you want to remove some part of that selection, just hold Alt key and select your desire area. Property Toolbar for Marquee Tool: When you pick Marquee tool, then options in Top Property toolbar will change. You will find the following: First small box will be New Selection. It means when you will draw any rectangle anywhere, then it will start new selection. Add to Selection mean it will make selections from different selection. Just like using Shift key while selecting. Subtract from selection will delete some selection; it is just like using Alt key during selection. If you have selected anything and then you click on Intersect with selection then you draw some other selection and its some part comes over previous selection, then only this selection will remain all other selection will remove. Mean those parts of selection which Intersect each other will remain, all other selection will remove. Feather is the main thing. It is useful only when you give any number before selecting anything. If you have selected anything and then give Feather, it will do nothing. By using this, you can make edges of selection a bit blurred. Note: If you have changed the feather and then later anytime you will select anything, remember it will make it default, so you will find feather anytime, sometime during selection it will give error that area is too short. So always try to keep this 0px unless on necessary occasion. From Style menu you will find Fixed Ratio and Fixed Size. If you have selected Fix Ratio then you have to tell it Width and Height in proportion. Like you need Width double than

height, and then give 2 in Width and 1 in Height. So when you will draw selection, it will be wider automatically. While if you have selected Fixed Size, then you will have to give the accurate size of selection before making selection. You can give selection size in Px, mm, cm, inches etc. Inverse Selection: If you have drawn a selection and now wanted to inverse it, mean the impact should come around the selection, then just press Ctrl+Shift+I. Elliptical Marquee Tool: It also works like Rectangular Marquee tool, but difference is it will select in Round or Elliptical shape. All other settings are same as of Rectangular Marquee tool. Single Row Marquee Tool: It is also used to select, but it will select only 1 px Row. After selecting you can give Stroke to this selection. Single Column Marquee Tool: It is also used to select, but it will select only 1 px Column Why to use Marquee Tool: After making selection through Marquee tool, you can copy any object, delete any object, fill colors/gradient/patterns etc. So it is the most important tool. How to unselect anything? In simple words if you want to remove the selection, just press Ctrl+D. LASSO TOOL (Shortcut Key L) This tool is also used for Selection. There are three tools inside this tool. Lasso Tool, Polygonal Lasso Tool and Magnetic Lasso Tool. Lasso Tool: If you want to make freeform selection, mean while using your mouse pointer you want to select. Just hold this tool and take mouse pointer to your desire location and hold left click and then drag the mouse on your desire location. Just leave the pointer to first point from where you started or just leave the Left click.

Polygonal Lasso Tool: It will work same as Lasso Tool, but while using this tool, you dont have to hold Left click while dragging. Just click on the first point from where you want to start the selection, press left click once and then go to some other place and click there, likewise click on your desire points and then in the last either click on the first point or at last point instead of clicking once, just double click there. Magnetic Lasso Tool: For using this tool you will be needing a picture in which two colors joint together. Like shown Take mouse pointer to the place from where you want to start selection, click there and slowly move Mouse Pointer on the edges, you can click after some distance to make the node, and while moving on the edges, just click on the first point. What you have to do if a Node came on wrong position? If a node came on wrong position then take mouse pointer closer to that point and then press Backspace key. You can hit Backspace as many times as you can, it will remove all nodes. Feather Edges: Before starting the selection and after taking this tool, you can set Feather on top property bar. (If you forgot to give the feather and you have made selection, then dont worry you can set feather after selection, just run the command, Select >> Modify >> Feather (for Adobe Photoshop CS) and Select >> Feather (for older versions). Give your desire feather and then hit OK. How to take one picture to another? If you want to take one picture to another file, here are the methods: Method 1: Open 1 picture file and then take any new file (on which you want to put), run the command Window >> Documents >> Tile (for older versions) or Window >> Arrange >> Tile (for Adobe Photoshop CS), it will show both files at a time. While using Move tool, pick your picture and drop it on other file.

Note: Suppose both files are having same size and you want to put picture on the same place where it is on Current file, then while moving it just hold Shift key. It will put on same position where it is at the moment. If you drag file while holding shift key, then this result will occur: (remember both files are having same size) While dragging if you are holding Shift key, then this result will occur: (remember both files are having same size) Method 2: Open 1 picture and press Ctrl+A (select all), press Ctrl+C (Copy) if it is having one layer or press Ctrl+Shift+C (Copy Merged) if it is having more than one layer. Now close this file and open any other file on which you want to put. Just press Ctrl+V (paste) there. How to copy an object in same file? There are 4 methods to do so: Method 1: Select the layer you want to copy, just press Ctrl+J. Method 2: Select the layer you want to copy, just press Alt and any arrow key. Method 3: While using Move tool, hold Alt key and then drag the object by using Left Click. (Dont forget to select the desire layer first). Method 4: Open Layer panel by pressing F7 key, then hold the layer and put it on Create New Icon at the bottom of the layer. It is very important lecture, in this lecture you will learn some commands which you will be using later again and again. PATTERN STAMP TOOL (Shortcut Key S) It is very important tool, by using this tool you can use patterns on your desire location by Brushing. Before using any pattern dont forget to take new Layer. Because if you need to remove that pattern just delete its layer. Pick

this tool and then from the top property panel you can choose Brush of your own style. How to add more brushes? If you want to add more brush styles, then click on the Brushs Down Arrow, all brushes styles would come, in this box click on more buttons and then select Load Brushes. Go to that place where you have stored brushes styles, To change the brush size you can press [' or '] and to change the Brush style you can press . or , You can also change the Mode while brushing and also the Opacity. From Pattern Picker you can choose your desire pattern. How to add more Patterns? If you want to add more Pattern then click on the Down Arrow of Pattern Picker and then click on more buttons , then choose Load Patterns. Select the location where patterns are and hit open. How to use pattern on Whole layer or Selected Areas equally? If you are using Pattern while using Pattern Stamp tool and during brushing you can miss some place, so instead of using Brush you can draw pattern on whole layer or selected areas, just run the command Edit >> Fill and then select Pattern from Use list and select your desire pattern, set the opacity and hit OK. How to make your own Pattern? If you want to make your own patterns and then use it later, here is the procedure. 1. Take a new file of your desire pattern size. Im here going to take 200px wide by 25px height. Im going to write Stunning Mesh and using it as Watermark. 2. Write your desire text or draw your desire pattern on it. 3. Press Ctrl+A to select all. 4. Run the command Edit >> Define Pattern and write any name. You can use this pattern on any file like: GRADIENT TOOL (Shortcut key G) By using this tool you can draw Color layers. Before using this tool better to take a new Layer, so that it would be easy for you to delete

any Gradient. When you will pick Gradient tool then property toolbar will give the following options: By clicking on Gradient Editor you can edit any gradient or you can create any gradient of your own desire colors, while Gradient Picker will let you show existing Gradients, you can choose anyone. When you click on the Gradient Editor, following box will display. While using Opacity Stop you can change the opacity of every color and while using Color stop you can add colors here. If you want to add different colors just click on the empty space in between Two Color Stops and add any color like: You can also change the opacity of any color like this: From top property toolbar you can change the Gradients type; In the dialog box you can write any name and click on New, it will permanently save the Gradient for future. How to import more Gradients? You can download millions of gradients from Internet, but remember more gradients you have it slower the speed of Photoshop. So always try to have selective gradients. After picking the Gradient tool, click on Gradient Picker and then hit on more button , then select Load Gradients and go to the place where you have downloaded Gradients. Then hit open. ERASER TOOL (Shortcut key E) In this tool you will find 3 tools, i.e. Eraser Tool, Background Eraser tool and Magic Eraser Tool. Eraser Tool: It is very important tool, by using this tool you can delete any part of any layer. (Except Text layer, to delete any part of this layer you have to Rasterize Text layer). Just pick this tool and activate the layer from where you want to delete. You can choose Brush style and size from top Property bar. (We have already discussed how to import brushes styles). These kinds of effects you can make while using this tool: Ive done it by using feathered brush.

Background Eraser tool: When you take a new file having any background either White or Background Color, then you will see there is a layer named Background in Layer panel. You can delete any part of this layer. To do so you have to change the name of layer or by using Background Eraser. Just click on the Background layer and then pick Background Eraser tool, start erasing your desire part. When you will leave the left click you will find the name of background layer is now changed. Magic Eraser tool: It is very important tool. By using this tool you can erase any color anywhere from the layer. First of all activate the layer by click on its name in Layer panel. Then pick this tool and you will find Tolerance box in the Top Property Panel. If you write bigger number there then it will delete the more part of the color, and lesser number will delete lesser color. In property bar Contiguous is very important, if you switch it off and click anywhere, it will only erase color which is associated with that color but adjacent to that color, while switching off will erase that color anywhere in that layer. Sample all layers is also very important. Suppose you have 2 different layers but having same object (like above). Select layer 1 and click on any color in layer 2, Layer 1 color will be deleted (by switching off this command will not delete anything). CROP TOOL (Shortcut Key C) This tool is used to cut the extra areas around the file. Suppose you have taken larger file and you have done work in smaller areas. Now you want to get rid of the extra areas, for this just pick this tool and make selection like Rectangular Marquee tool. When you select the area, it will become brighter and areas around will become darker. You can adjust the selection by holding it from the edges, when you think that now area is sufficient then hit <Enter> key. Crop tool used here: Now after cropping (by pressing <Enter> key) all extra area deleted: PEN TOOL

(Shortcut Key P) This is the most important tool in Photoshop, by using this tool you can make any kind of selection. There are many ways to use this tool. In this tool you will find, Pen Tool , Freeform Pen Tool, Add Anchor Point Tool , Delete Anchor Point tool , Convert Point tool . So lets start with new file, put any picture in it so it will be easy for you to make selection. Im using Stunning Mesh Logo in a new file and then selecting it by using Pen Tool. Suppose we want to select only S from Stunning mesh. Pick Pen Tool and zoom only S part by using Zoom tool. Method # 1: 1. Now while selecting Pen tool click on any starting point, then click on the other point where you think Curve is going to end. Likewise click on the different points to make rough selection like shown below: 2. Now pick Add Anchor Point tool and click on any line which you want to convert into Curve. Just single click there to make node, then hold this node and move it on your desire location. If you think that curve is not becoming your desire one, here you can use Shape Handles, If you hold any shape handle then you can move it to change the curve, if you move one shape handle, the other will move along with it, but if you think that it should not move along with other Shape Handle, just hold Alt key and move the shape handle (you will see other side of node will not move). But again if you want to move that part also, again hold Alt key. 3. like doing this change the lines into curves and make your desire path. Method # 2: Instead of using Add Anchor Point tool, you can use only Pen Tool to make these kinds of selections: 1. Pick pen tool and click on the starting point, where you want to start the selection. 2. Click on the other location where you think Curve can be, click there and hold Left click (dont leave left click) and move the pointer to make your desire curve. 3. Now before clicking on other location just hold Alt key and click on the node which you just created (between the centers of Shape

Handles). When you click there, you will see one Shape handle would vanish. 4. Now again click on the other part and dont leave left click, while holding left click down, move your pointer to make the curve and after leaving left click, hold Alt key and click on the newly created node. So while doing so go to the first node, when you click there it will not give Shape handles there. After making the path, convert these into selection. For this, right click anywhere and select Make Selection. Give your desire Feather and hit ok. You will get the following selection: Notes: If you think that you have put a node on wrong place, pick Delete Anchor Point tool and click your desire node to delete. In Method # 2, while making new point and without leaving left click, if you hold Alt key and move the shape handle on the newly added node, you will not need to click on the node while holding Alt key. Mean you can pick Alt key anytime and leave Shape handle on the Node instead of removing it. Freeform Pen Tool: By using this tool you can select any part or more than one part at a time. For this purpose you have to move mouse pointer while holding left click. Select one part and start selecting other part. When you think now these point should be converted to Selection, right click anywhere and selection Make Selection option. You will get this after converting it to Selection:
