Excel provides another extremely powerful formula LINEST for calculating the Regression Equation
The formula LINEST is an array formula and has four parameters which are as follows:
Parameter Meaning
Known Y's Range of Y Value(s)
Known X's Range of X Value
Intercept True or False
Stats True or False
Steps:
1. Enter the formula in any cell as follows: =LINEST(C2:C16,B2:B16,TRUE,TRUE)
2. The formula will return a single value: 0.34
3. Keeping the value returned in step 2 in the top-left corner, select 2 columns and 5 rows
4. Press F2
5. Press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER
6. The highlighted cells will be populated with some values which are interpreted as follows:
0.341 60.584 Slope Constant
0.261 7.867 se (slope) se (constant)
0.116 5.942 r-square se (y estimates)
1.708 13.000 f value degrees of freedom
60.294 459.039 reg-ss resid-ss
