TYPES OF SPORTS EVENTS AND TOURNAMENTS

Sporting events are not just limited to leagues and tournaments. Various sports events
occur in different settings, serving different purposes. More so, when planning to
organize such events, one should identify first the purpose the event should serve.
Types of Sports Events
Developmental
These includes sport developmental camps,
clinics, trainings and workshops whose goals
are to nourish and enhance sports skills to
develop potential athletes. Some examples may
include kids’ basketball camp, swimming clinic,
gymnastics clinic, etc.

Participative
These may include sports settings organized for
special occasions or public and private short-term
events, some examples are fun runs, intramurals or
sports tournaments for foundation day, team building
sports competitions, and the like. This type of sports
setting may also serve social awareness events.

Athletic Tournaments
These are formal sports competitions that may
include schools, college or university athletics, local,
national and international sports organizations, and
amateur and professional sports competitions.

Leisure or Recreational
These types of sports setting that provides services
for an organization’s short- or long-term sports
participation. Organizations may include sports clubs,
interest clubs, public and private clubs. Clienteles
may also include companies and institutions that
provide corporate fitness programs for their
employees.

Fundraising/Charitable
Sports settings that are organized for certain causes.
Sports events are ideal settings from which funds can be
raised from registration fees of players, ticket selling,
souvenirs, and the like. In organizing sports events that
include competitions and tournaments, one should be
knowledgeable of the different tournament formats.
Types of Tournament Formats
A. Challenge Tournaments
This tournament has levels where winners go up and losers go down from their
respective positions. Winning is important to climb to the top position. This type of
tournament needs sufficient time to give chance to bottom dwellers to reach the
top. Tournament positions are usually occupied on a first-come-first-served basis.

Types of Challenge Tournament

• Ladder tournament suits single-player competitions like
tennis or badminton where participants challenge each
other on a one-on one match. Players move up or down
the ladder depending on how they fared in their matches.
The player on top of the ladder will be declared the winner

• Pyramid tournament is almost similar to the ladder

tournament except that it has more players at the lower
level when the tournament starts, then the number of
players decrease as the level progresses. An individual
can challenge anybody within the horizontal level and
the winner goes up to challenge the higher level.

• Spider Web tournament is a bracketing design taken

from the shape of a spider web. The top position is the
center where players reach it through the lines drawn
from the center. The participant who gets to the center
of the web gets the championship. Lines are drawn
radially from the center with lines crossing them.
Challenges can be against anyone on the next position
nearer to the center, but a player coming from a loss
can only challenge someone from his or her own level.
This type of tournament offers more competition than
most.

B. Round-Robin Tournaments
the most commonly used and one of the top competitive tournament types since it permits
maximal play. All teams will play against each other at least once during the tournament and the
team with the most points will be the winner. Teams get similar game points from a win and a
loss. Round robin is ideally used for team competition playing not more than eight games.

Types of Round Robin Tournament

• Round Robin is a format where each team plays a number of games (n-1) depending on
how many teams are participating. Usually, teams are divided into two groups (n/2) and
ranked by game points. Crossover games are then held with the top team in a group
plays against the bottom team of another group, and the second-ranked teams are
playing against the third-ranked teams from the opposite group.

• Lombard Round Robin is a round-robin variation used for a limited allotted period. If full
games are not possible, mini-games are played. All scored for or against points are
recorded to determine the winning team with the best ratio.
C. Elimination Tournament

An elimination tournament is for short round of matches. Single or pair losses instantly eliminate
participants. This is suitable for time-constrained events but is disadvantageous for maximal play.

Types of Elimination Tournament

• Single or straight elimination happens when the losing player or team gets eliminated,
and the winning (player or team) continues to play onto the next round. This happens
until there is only one team left, which is declared as the winner. This is used when the
time is limited while sacrificing maximum play. It is the simplest to arrange and fastest
way to proclaim a winner

• Double elimination is similar to single elimination except that a player or team gets
eliminated after losing twice.
