Concept Check #3

This document contains a concept check with 11 physics problems related to force, motion, work, energy, and other concepts. The student is asked to show their work to receive full credit. The problems involve calculating acceleration of objects being pulled by opposing forces, finding the required force to produce a given acceleration, analyzing forces in equilibrium on an inclined plane, calculating acceleration down an inclined plane with friction, finding work done by a force at an angle, calculating speed from kinetic energy, analyzing gravitational potential energy, analyzing potential energy stored in a spring, calculating impact speed of a falling object neglecting air resistance, analyzing motion down a frictionless hill involving kinetic and potential energy and a spring, and calculating time and work to climb a rope with given

Concept Check #3 Name: z h a n s u n

Chapter 4: Force and Motion

Chapter 5: Work and Energy

Show all work in order to get full credit.

1. A dog pulling on a 1.5 kg bone parallel to the ground with a force of 7.0 N to the left and the
boy is pulling on the bone parallel to the ground with a force of 3.0 N to the right. What is
the acceleration of the bone, don’t forget direction?

2. What is the force required to give a 45.0 N suitcase an acceleration of 3.6 m/s2?

3. A block with a mass of 7.5 kg is held in equilibrium with a force pushing parallel to a 35o
ramp. Find the FN and the force holding the block. Draw a diagram and label the forces.
4. A clerk moves a 15 kg box down an aisle with a force of 155 N at an angle of 35.0o to the
horizontal. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the box and floor is 0.35. Find the
acceleration of the box.

5. A shopper moves a cart with a force of 35 N directed at an angle of 40.0 o downward from the
horizontal. Find the work done by the shopper on the cart as she moves 90. m down the
aisle.
6. Calculate the speed of a 9.5 x 104 kg airliner with a kinetic energy of 2.1 x 109 J.

7. A 3.5 kg ball is attached to a ceiling by a string. The distance from the center of the ball to the
ceiling is 3.0 m and the height of the room is 5.0 m. What is the gravitational potential energy
associated with the ball relative to the floor?

8. A spring with a force constant of 7.8 N/m has a relaxed length of 3.75 m. When the mass is
pulled from the starting position to 4.75 m out, what is the potential energy stored in the
spring?

9. An airplane is flying at a speed of 60.0 m/s when it drops at 40.0 kg food package to the
team below. If the plane drops the package from an altitude of 350.0 m and air resistance
can be neglected, how fast is the package moving when it hits the ground?

10. Robert weighs 650N and is sliding down a frictionless 15 m tall hill. He starts at the top with a
velocity of 12.5 m/s. At the bottom of the hill he hits a spring and compresses it 0.89 m.
What is the maximum velocity of Robert? (the spring constant = 1.5 N/m)
11. A 53 kg student climbs up a 5.50 m rope at a constant speed. If the student’s power output is
145 W, how long does it take the student to climb up the rope? How much work does the
student do?
