“Comfort came in with the middle classes.” ~ Clive Bell
I believe that I belong in the middle class because our life is characterized by a certain
level of financial stability and comfort. I can say that we are not living in poverty, but we are
not extremely wealthy either. We have a comfortable lifestyle that allows us to enjoy some
luxuries, but my parents/we also face financial challenges such as debt, job insecurity, and
limited upward mobility. We have access to basic necessities such as housing, food, and
healthcare, as well as some discretionary income for leisure activities or for traveling. My
family can afford to send us to good schools and universities, which can lead us to better job
opportunities and higher salaries. We also have access to quality healthcare, which can help
us to maintain good health and prevent illnesses. But even our social class that is neither
extremely wealthy nor poor I still can experience social inequality.
It happened when I was a grade 3 student, I joined Ms. VAES in our school. As far as
I know, it was like a pageant. I joined in because I want to experience what it was like to join
in the pageant and my mother also wants me to join in. My lola and tita were supportive that
time, they prepared the clothes I’m going to wear to the pageant… they prepare everything.
But I didn’t know that the pageant I joined was going to be based on how rich you are or how
much money you can give to the school. But even though I know that my win will be based
on how much money I can give to the school, I still try to fight. We sell tickets so we can
have enough money that can bring me to victory. But even though we sell tickets, we still
have no match against my opponent because they are rich. They can use their own money to
get the victory while us can’t because we can’t collect enough money and even though we
have enough money, my opponent will just gonna increase the money they gonna give to
school so that she can still be the winner. I feel really disappointed at that time because
money can buy anything. I said to myself at that time, “I wish I didn't join” and “Next time,
before I join any contest I will know the criteria first before joining.”
Another social inequality I saw was when my father was just standing on the bus the
whole trip (from Pasay to Quezon City, as far as I know) because that one woman claimed
that the seat beside me was her. I was in 4th (5th?) grade that time when it happened. Me and
my lola are gonna go on vacation in our province at that time, my father just came along
because he doesn’t want us to carry the luggage that my lola brought. We didn’t book a plane
ticket because my lola bought so much luggage that time. We were still in Pasay that time
then we boarded the bus. After a while a woman came up and started to claim that the seat
beside me was her seat. My lola said it was not her seat but the woman kept on insisting that
it was hers so my father left no choice and stood up and gave up his seat. My father doesn’t
want to argue with that woman because she’s a WOMAN. My father found a seat but could
not find one so he stood up for the whole trip. I was mad that time to that one woman because
she used in a lowkey way the “I’m a woman and you’re a man, you’re much stronger than me
so give me that seat” but all I can do is to watch my father standing all the way from Pasay to
Quezon City because if he argue to that woman there will be possibility that woman will
gonna make up a story and . That time was the time when I wanted to become a lawyer
because I want to have a law that would also protect the man in the country where I am. It's
so unfair on the part of men when they know that there are laws that can protect women but
don't have one in man. Like when a man scratches the woman, the man will face law
immediately. Women are so vocal about their feelings and men are not, and not because man
doesn’t say out loud what they really feel, you have the right to say they were strong. The
government should also create a law that would protect men not only women.
The government can help those struggling with financial difficulties, healthcare
concerns, and job insecurities due to the pandemic by providing financial assistance,
healthcare support, and job opportunities. They can also address the root causes of poverty
and inequality by implementing policies and programs that improve access to education,
housing, and basic services. This comprehensive approach is imperative to ensure no one is
left behind and to build a brighter future for all.
Social inequalities I know and experienced is one of the reasons why I am in the
STEM strand. I want to pursue civil engineering because it was a high-paying career with
opportunities for advancement and job security. But reaching civil engineering is hard, I need
to pursue a bachelor's degree from an accredited university. If I have a lot of free time in the
future I will pursue business law and land law because it would be essential if I start a
business. There’s a lot of things I need to do in the future as I want to pursue what I want but
as of now all I need to do is to study hard for the next step.
